YOUNGBLOOD with Rob Lowe & Patrick Swayze is the Best Movie You Never Saw

  • If you played hockey as a kid growing up in the late eighties/early nineties, you probably watched the 1986 cult classic Youngblood, starring Rob Lowe. A risqué, action-packed hockey flick, in it Lowe plays a seventeen-year-old farm boy who joins the Hamilton Mustangs. While there, he’s taken under the wing of an older player, played by the late, great Patrick Swayze, and has to deal with a brutal bully on the ice. To make his dreams of playing in the NHL come true, Lowe’s Derek Youngblood must learn to stand up for himself both on the ice and off.
With its R-rating, Youngblood is a cool little eighties movie and, outside of 1977’s Slap Shot, one of the most beloved hockey flicks of the era. Even though it wasn’t much of a hit back in 1986, it holds up pretty well as a film of its era and even co-stars a very young Keanu Reeves as a French Canadian teammate of Derek’s, plus the great Ed Lauter as his coach, and Cynthia Gibb as his love interest. It’s this week’s Best Movie You Never Saw!
Let us know if you’ve ever seen Youngblood in the comments!

The perfect movie indeed! And I was just the right age for having Swayze and Rob Lowe as romantic heroes,, it really didn't matter that they had skates on... my brother watched this movie 6 times during the 24 hour rental period,, and I was right there beside him,, good memories 👌🙂

My best friend when I was ten introduced me to this movie. He had a new VCR which is like owning a Lamborghini today. One of his first tapes was Youngblood and we were huge Flyers fans and hockey in general so we loved it. Of course we were in love with Cynthia Gibb and Mrs. McGill's impressive funbags. We'd quote this movie all the time when we were growing up. "Did you put the puck in the net before or after Mrs. McGill caught you?"
I might have messed it up, it's been 30 plus years. But I love this movie still.

  • @thegadflygang5381

Youngblood and The Program were my go to movies in high school and college. Before every game, the Youngblood tape came out and we got psyched up.
Alot of NHLers in the film and Swayze can actually skate which is impressive as hell. Rob, although i love him, can barely stand up on skates, why Peter Zezel of the Flyers does all his double work. Which is most

Haven’t seen too many movies with Rob Lowe but he was good in this movie. But Patrick Swayze is one of the most underrated actors. Swayze elevated movies with his side roles. He of course is known for his heart throb movies but Red Dawn, Roadhouse, Point Break, he was great in action movies. I wish he would’ve been casted in more of them. Truly some missed opportunities. When I saw this I totally missed Keanu somehow lol. Makes Point Break even more cool to me with the reunion.

@@daveyboy_ People normally try to spell the word right when they try to make a defense. Underrated has two Rs my guy. I don’t care how old you are or if you saw his movies in the 80s. I grew up through the 90s growing up watching his movies. Wow I’m so cool like you right? Hardly anyone besides this awesome RUclips channel talks about how great Swayze was back in the 80s and 90s. He deserves to be talked about today. Especially after his passing. Maybe you need to look up what the word underrated means, because since you clearly can’t spell it, I doubt you understand it. He deserves the respect to be talked about like again this channel does more often.

One of my all time childhood favorite movies- was in 6th grade when this came out in 86 - had a pond across the street and skated from Dec- March every year in the 80's and up through the early 90's before going off to college. This movie highlighted some of the best years of my life - the feeling of skating in open air, never wanting to come in like Youngblood himself says in the movie. I watched it so many times and it never gets old. Going to hold on to these memories forever as Winters these days are a week here and there and skating on the pond is almost a thing of the past.

I watched it twice in one sitting. Here's why: My mother was invited to go see "Out of Africa" at the local theatre, and she asked me and my sister to go because she needed help with her wheelchair. No fan of Redford or Streep, my sister and I chose to watch "Youngblood". The only problem was that OOA was one of the LONGEST movies in movie history, so we paid to watch "Youngblood" again. I fell asleep about 15 minutes in and it was halfway through when my sister woke me up to say it was time to go home. 36 years later I can still recall bits and pieces of the film. Not the movie I'd take a date to, but it's watchable.

Watching this on a date as a 15-year old on a summer language course in Oxford 1987 was great!
Info: Yes, it premiered a year earlier (1986 in USA) but film copies then did cost a lot of money. Most movies were first shown in USA and then months or even years later, shipped over to Europe. First to English speaking countries and after that run, were subtitled (or worse dubbed, ugh...) to secondary markets like Sweden, where I saw it again in the fall of 1987, with swedish text.

He has (had? haven't listened in a while) a podcast where he broke this down. If you have leading man good looks in Hollywood, leading man scripts is what you get. Lots of actors are fine with that. But, he mentioned that some try hard to break out of the mold. He went on to talk about how Alec Baldwin ate his way out of being a leading man to get more character acting, Pitt took smaller roles for little money where he could look disheveled.

Since guys like Racki do exist it forces the viewer to examine the options.
