Seinfeld: George Steinbrenner's "Billy Martin" Rant

- George Steinbrenner has to fire Mr. Morgan because Kramer sells the card to Stubbs and George Costanza can't get it to Mr. Morgan for him to sign. One of George Steinbrenner's best rants. From the episode "The Wink" from the Season 7 DVD.
Here is the rant if you want to know the names of all the managers:
"You know as painful as it is I had to let a few people go over the years. Yogi Berra, Lou Piniella, Bucky Dent, Billy Martin, Dallas Green, Dick Howser, Bill Virdon, Billy Martin, Stump Merrill, Billy Martin, Bob Lemon, Billy Martin, Gene Michael, Buck Showalter, uh, tut!, . . .George, you didn't hear that from me. [George exits] . . . George!" - Развлечения
"It's a lot more work you know ... a lot more responsibility ... long, long hours! Not much more money!"
So frankly every job ever….
LOL Not much more money cracked me up.
But at least you get the recognition you deserve.
"That's what I'm afraid of."
Pretty much George’s worst nightmare
George’s line ‘that’s what I’m afraid of’ was great. With his reputation and the delivery, it was even better.
Somewhere in heaven, Billy Martin just lost his job.
He's gotten it back 30 times since this comment was made.
"It's almost like he went out of his way not to sign it" hahahaha
Larry David as Mr. Steinbrenner is brilliant. Billy Martin! LOL
He was short one Billy Martin.
Does anyone know why he says Billy Mart8n so many times? I dont get it 🤷♂️
@@Splinter3385 bc he hired and fired billy martin like 5 or 6 times throughout the 70s and 80s
@@MrKJ444 Thank you! I could never figure out why! 😄
@@SwordHMX He was also short a Bob Lemon, who was the Yankees manager twice too! (L.O.L.!) Martin had five stints as Yankees manager, and know he resigned the first time he left, albeit was probably forced to. I believe he was fired the next three times he was their skipper, which was for never more than a full season though.
I always love how George walks out while he's talking.
Like Steinbrenner even noticed.
I had no idea why he kept mentioning billy martin. Then my Dad told me gs would hire and fire him multiple times and i went back and watched this and was in tears. The fact that he said billy Martin in the same tone each time makes it 10X funnier.
I just learned about it from a Foolish Baseball clip and came back to watch this again
Hilarious. That's why I came to this video, me and my dad were talking about the Yanks and he said Gs would hire and fire Bully Martin all the time😂
Said he did it in the same year once.
The 1 dislike is the ghost of Billy Martin....
I didn't get the "George, you didn't hear that from me" part until I read the comments. Good stuff!
all these years later and i still like the part where he said billy martin.
Ha you fail to mention how Seinfeld called Buck's firing. He was canned two weeks after this episode aired.
Yeah. Stinebrener met him in the office at the kingdome and told him there were going to be changes. He started firing his staff little by little then canned him
I heard it was because Buck failed to sign his birthday card.
Seinfeld put Steinbrenner up to firing Showalter.
Who, Seinfeld?
I think Buck stood up to Steinbrenner and won't agree to having his coaches replaced. So he got fired too! Then Joe Torre was hired. I remember the NY papers calling Torre "Clueless Joe". And the rest is baseball & Yankees history!
Poor Billy Martin always getting the can 😂😂😂
Billy martin got so much can, more can than one man can handle.
Hahahahahaha according to Wikipedia, Steinbrenner mentioned EVERY Yankee manager (except Clyde King) from 1974 to 95.
Clyde King never got fired, he was only an interim manager and reverted back to his old job after the season
@@Mrmoustache6 I see. I know nothing about NY Yankee managers.
Bucky Dent...Billy Martin...Dick Houser...Bill Virdon...Billy Martin.
Leave it to Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld to put in the baseball humor! Both are such loyal fans of the game and they know their baseball history
20 years later, Showalter still managing in the AL East.
It’s amazing to think the Yankees have only had 3 managers since this episode aired in 1995.
Yeah, and they also haven't actually "fired" a manager since they canned Stump Merril after the 91 season. Showalter, Torre, and Girardi simply didn't have their contracts renewed when they all left the Yankees after that.
Joe Torre, Joe Girardi, Aaron Boone, Billy Martin.
Sadly Steinbrenner died and they haven't been to the WS since. He would have gone through a few more since 2010 if he was still alive.
You Know George As Painful As It Is I Had To Let A Few People Go Over The Years. Yogi Berra, Lou Piniella, Bucky Dent, Billy Martin (5X), Dallas Green, Dick Houser, Bill Virdon, Stump Merrill, Bob Lemon, Gene Michael, Buck Showalter, Joe Torre, Uh Tut!... George, You Didn't Hear That From Me. George!
Who's Joe Torre? Haha, he outlived Steinbrenner.
costanza walks out..LIKE A BOSS!
RIP Bill Virdon (for some reason I had to watch THIS of all things)
First thing I thought of as well. 90 years old, lived a heck of a life!
anytime some gets promoted at work ..... shoot i should just bookmark this lol
It's my job to be repetitive. My job. My job. Repetitiveness is my job! I am going to go out there tonight and give the best performance of my life.
- The best performance of your life?
The best performance of my life.
Yes they were. In fact they were also born on the same day, although one year apart. Davis was born on July 4, 1929 and Steinbrenner exactly one year later in 1930.
Coincidence? Or maybe Steinbrenner decided to can Showalter after watching this?
He was actually offered a 2 year extension on conditions for replacing some of the supporting coaching staff. He refused the deal.
Chicago Cubs Fans will say Damn You Costanza
Larry David is a gotdamn genius.
You must be German... or a wannabe German.
@deanronson6331 you must be miserable in life, or an asshole.
I just now found out that Steinbrenner passed away today. Maybe he rest in peace.
I know, AMAZING !!! Talk about life imitating art after art imitated life !!!
Bob was the coach at the time and did get fired shortly after this.
That's what I'm afraid of..
He cuts himself off when hes about to say 'buck showalter' foreshadowing showalters real life firing 😂
The one and only The Boss !!
Larry David's a genius!
When George says that getting the recognition that he deserves is what he's afraid of, we know exactly what he means. He has been flying under the radar. As soon as he gets noticed for his shitty jobs skills, he's going to be fired lolll.
I heard Billy Martin was a psycho on the field, attacking umpires. XD
R.I.P. George
haha LD has the best voice for Steinbrenner
I heard that George Steinbrenner and Raiders owner Al Davis were great friends
and
@BumJuiceDrinker Buck Showalter was the manager of the Yankees from 1992 to 1995, after Stump Merrill was fired after the 1995 season. Though the Yankees made the playoffs in 1995,Showalter was replaced as manager by Joe Torre when the Yankees lost the Division Series to the Seattle Mariners, 3 games to 2, after winning the first 2 games. Showalter managed the Arizona Diamondbacks, was a broadcaster for ESPN, and is currently the manager of the Baltimore Orioles.
RIP George
Oh man I forgot this was the "Carl the Exterminator" episode
No it wasn't..
I had always thought that Showalter resigned from the Yankees to take over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Apparently not.
They didn't exist in 1996.
Everyone George meets, he ruins their lives
Now Buck Showalter will coaching the Mets.
How many times did Steinbrenner fire Billy Martin?
I think only three times, since I know Billy resigned (albeit was probably forced to) during the 78 season. Bob Lemon was also let go twice as their manager as well.
5
Steinbrenner actually said in interviews he planned to rehire Martin the season after his death.
@@freakyfornashhe was actually only fired, in the strict sense of the word, once, in 1979. He forced to resign in 1978, and was kept on the payroll in different roles after 1983 and 1985 and 1988.
Yogi Beara!
funny clip.
👌🏻
the big boss will be missed !! RIP
Billy Martin
RIP Steinbrenner
@mbittenbender YOU ARE SO CORRECT. Showalter along with Gene Michael, built the dynasty which fell on Joe Torre's lap. He's also a stand-up guy who refused another contract from Steinbrenner and his fellow "baseball ignorant" cronies, if it included firing 4 of his coaches...... In the early 90's, Steinbrenner wanted to trade a shy, nervous rookie pitcher. Showalter talked him out of it, insisting "THIS KID CAN PITCH". The kid's name?..............MARIANO RIVERA
It's funny because showalter wasn't gone.... Yet
tim millea the joke was Steinbrenner let showalter go 2 weeks after this episode.
@gobears1987 That was EPIC Hope you dont mind if I borrow that.....
Ironic is that Showlater got fired around this time. Can someone give me the timeline which happened first: this episode aired or Bucks real firing? Was it inside knowledge that Showalter was gone after 95 season regardless? Or World Series or bust?
Showalter really got canned a few weeks later, and at the time I thought the writers knew something we didn't. But then I realized if you just bet on Steinbrenner to fire the manager between 1978 and 1995 you had an excellent chance of being right.
@frankeb1980 but which happened 1st this episode airing or Buck getting fired for real?
@@Bull1908 The episode aired first, before Buck was not bought back as Yankees manager.
@@freakyfornash Then the writers must have been mind readers or a Yankee insider contacted Larry David cause art and reality blurred with that comment at that time lol.
@@Bull1908 Yeah, something like that! (L.O.L.!) It aired around two weeks before it was announced that Buck wasn't coming back. Although I should point out that Showalter wasn't actually "fired", but rather simply didn't have his contract renewed though. The same of which was also the case with Joe Torre, and Girardi for that matter too.
@3ringsAIKMAN That's crazy...I'm an avid Yankees fan, and I didn't know that little tidbit. Was he really gonna trade Rivera?
@frankeb1980 Jeter was actually pegged as the starting shortstop beforehand, while Fernandez was expected to be the starting, or at least platoon at second base until he got injured during spring training, in order to make room for Jeter. Though Steinbrenner was kind of weary of having a then inexperienced Jeter be the full time SS, with thinking he wasn't quite ready to be that just yet, thus was why the Rivera/Fermin trade was considered. The Yankees ironically signed Fermin later in the season, but never played an actual game for them, and was out of baseball entirely after 96 too.
why am i an idiot? just want to know if it was true or not
Ode to George Steinbrenner.
Why does Larry David sound like Bob Costas
@drzfynest65 ...Yes, Steinbrenner (may he now Rest In Peace), did not think Rivera had the "make-up" to be a big leaguer, (on the Yankees anyway) because at that time, he was so shy and quiet. Showalter, with a sharp eye for talent, saw that Rivera was big league material. I think it was obvious that in 1996 when Rivera was the set-up man for John Wettland, he had BETTER STUFF than Wettland.. Its been said that Steinbrenner wanted to trade BERNIE WILLIAMS.....But THAT one I'm not sure of.
@hoosier44 Go ahead
He fired city in colour?
I came here for a City & Colour/Alexisonfire reference.
I think Martin quit once, so that doesn't count.
And Showalter actually did get fired, haha.
