It's times like this where I wish I was born earlier, so I could have gotten a chance to experience the Slizers and Roboriders, and heck, Bionicle's beginning. I feel like such a kid saying that, but it's true. To this day, I have yet to experience what the Slizers and Roboriders have to offer. I don't think it'll be quite as meaningful as it could have been back in the day, but it sure would be nice to at least hold one.

We thought those boxes were like their ships, and you know how the boxes have sorta landing gear or something near the opening? I thought those were to put at your belt. It helped that in the box there were slots for discs.
Brain Waves Pohatu was literally the first Bionicle I got when the classic line was launched. Comment threads like this make me sad for the kids who didn't get to experience the magic of these series from the beginning, but also grateful to the community that was there for making it so magical.
I love the sets from the late 90s to the early 2000s, because of them being so experimental. I love the edgy and sleek, futuristic, industrial design. Lego really risked a lot in that time period and they managed to pull it of like nobody else. Also, the edginess makes the whole thing so cheesy, that it becomes awesome.
The experimental and out-there nature of stuff like the Slizers, RoboRiders or early Rahi endlessly fascinates me. The designs and story concepts thread the line between creativity and "lazily slapping parts around some play gimmick and calling it an alien robot/vehicle/animal/all of these at once". Sets like the Tarakava don't really resemble anything, but to me that makes them more interesting than some of the later, more "realistic" Rahi or a generic humanoid Titan. There's something to be said for those crazy environments and monsters they put on the background art too. I suppose these designs are emblematic of how Lego at the time was taking risks and throwing random stuff at the wall to see what sticks.
Vrahno I used to just stare at those backgrounds and wonder what the hell was going on in that world. Guess we never really found out but then Bionicle came along, books and all. I agree that it would be something else to open up a Dust Roborider and have that be your first experience with technic.
The Tarakava were the only Bionicle sets from 2001 which I actually owned, and I never owned the Slizers or RoboRiders. I was avid fan of the theme for several years, and ended up with at least one set from each complete year except '02 for some reason.
I seriously thought the robo-riders were just the product of a childhood fever dream that I had because of Bionicle. Glad to know they actually existed.
The best thing i liked about ExoForce was that the first wave had epic alternate models at a time where most sets didnt come with alternate models anymore. And the rest of the sets looked so cool and unique.

Depends. G2 Bionicle did constraction right. They looked interesting and were complex in their own way. Herofactory imho was constraction done wrong. The sets were basically dull dolls. Over time they ended up looking more and more like the G1 Bionicle sets than their own theme. It kind of ruins a theme when the only step forward is to go to another theme that did the same thing better. The other constraction themes before the Bionicle reboot were not perfect, but clearly evolving into what we got from G2. The new starwars constraction sets i gotta say are really well refined. @The Gray Kirby you know third party have 2 issues, one is that their popularity depends on popularity of licensed franchise, so they are selling well as long as the franchise is doing well ok Star Wars is a franchise hard to kill but last few movies and overall changes in lore done when it was passed to Disney caused many fans to look at it way less serious, just hoping it won't be as bad influence as it sounds when i'm talking about it but... you never know until it happens. Guys, there’s red letters dispersed through the slizer comic. Haven’t put them together yet, will edit with the hidden word or message It says “Take them for a spin”
This video was incredibly informative, and gave me a glimpse into a Lego past that I previously only had suspicions existed. Thank you so much; I hope you are able to continue doing these wonderful videos, whatever the rest of your future holds.
Man, giving me nostalgic memories of when my cousin gave me and my brother his "old" Lego magazines as a kid. I never had a full Slizer, just some parts of them from garage sales, so it's pretty cool to learn more about them... two decades later....
If anyone thinks stuff like classic Contraction wouldn't appeal to kids, let me address about two weeks ago, I was with my Grandma on vacation at a flea market and we saw several toy booths. One of them had a boy eyeing a set of two loose Roboriders and he seemed to have fallen immediately in love with it. He asked his mom and he got it. He probably is enjoying it right now. Even if things like Bionicle G2 failed, that doesn't mean there aren't kids who like any Constraction sets, but it seems they are fond of the pre-CCBS style system sets more than CCBS it appeared. I guess because you are actually having a gimmick to build with which-while G2 Bionicle did try-I think kids like more than just arm swinging and actually want to build something with more substance with an action gimmick for combat with friends for instance yet still be physically stable at the same time unlike G2's easy to lose masks
I honestly do not know. It seems kids like the old Constraction style over the CCBS one (not that I hate CCBS mind you) because it feels closer to Lego sets they might get in box and build rather than having an exo skeleton already made for you. Bionicle G2 tried to expand it but imo ended up failing to catch American kids interests which is why the Line died prematurely. I guess kids like the style of Meccano and Erector toys because you have to build them completely from scratch but once you make it they have a sense of satisfaction and pride in making it. With CCBS and HF/Bionicle G2 they had occasional gears and levies to make but it didn't appeal to kids probably because it lacks a complete thing to build. It seems like in Star Wars CCBS they are trying to avoid that mostly but personally I'd like to see a non-CCBS original constraction line. I actually had a good idea for one back in 2014 with a sort of hybrid between Roboriders and Slizers with giant robots and humanoid synths battling the 5 Wickings (Wicked Kings) with their bodies and their vehicles which could fire off weapons to duke it out with the Wicking's armies which I guess would be a good idea for a plot
I'm referring to how the intended demographic sees it (kids) I personally love it but I can see why they don't sell well with kids, not to mention their pricetags make them unaffordable for them
probably us older fans it seems. I don't know of any 7 year old (referring to my cousins as reference btw) who owns any CCBS sets (they have the big figs of Marvel and DC characters though) and perhaps older fans can afford the sets and appreciate them more than younger kids did
Really enjoyed this series, its really enjoyable to get down to the nitty gritty of lego related history and trivial pursuit levels of details, and I still believe that the way you have formated the series is welcoming to newcomers and people with relative unfamiliarity to the subject(s) at hand. Hope to see one or two pop up in my subscription box down the line, whenever you've the time to make more.
Fun fact: Around 1998-1999, Lego was working on releasing a Technic video game. It was apparently an exploration game where the player would explore and alien world, collect bricks, and upgrade their own vehicle. Unfortunately, the game got scrapped when Lego Media lost faith in the developers. This actually makes me wonder if it was going to tie in with Cybermaster, Competition, Slizers, or even Roboriders to help complete the lore. It also makes me wonder if there was a Technic Constraction line made for 1999 instead of Throwbots.
im so glad this "weird older kid" in our neighborhood gave me his hand me down bionicles, without that i wouldn't have had lego building to keep my imagination going for early highschool play years. so many hours building and imaging scenarios for the characters this building system made possible.
I've been watching a few of these LEGO Rewind videos now and I'm impressed with the attention to detail you have dedicated to following the developments of each product line, especially in this video. It's quite fun to hear about the Slizers again (never knew them as Throwbots though). I only had a few of them (definitely remember getting the Jungle Slizer first) and I was honestly quite fond of them. Even as a kid, I couldn't help but notice the similarities Bionicle had with them but that certainly didn't make me fall in love with them any less. I always found this side of Lego an interesting one and I thank you for having taken the time to go over it in such detail. =)
I remember having one of the Slizers back in the day, but that was a few years after I was born and I didn't have all the pieces. (At least I don't think so) I wanted to try to use its parts to make my own Keetongu MOC, but I ended up taking it apart too. Also, I really enjoy this series. It's interesting to learn about the old LEGO themes from before I was born in 1999 and afterwards. I really enjoy Planet Ripple, but I think this series was worth making. You don't have to spend so much time developing new episodes every 24/7, but honestly, all I can really say is, do whatever you want to do from here on out.
Nick on Planet Ripple 5:50 that is the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life.WHY DIDN'T MAKE A REMOTE CONTROL SET IN BIONICLE?!!THAT THING IS SH#T!!!!!😰😰😰😰😨😨😨😀😀
3:20 imagine if the had polybag vending machines nowadays! Now that would be awesome. Also your voice acting in this episode was really cool. I especially liked the part where you read the throw bots comic
My robotics class has all these kinds of pieces, from the older sets, no ball and socket joints, mainly some of the beams with studs, old gears, and a lot of NXT kits. Used some of the pieces to build some treads (non rubber ones, like actual tread links)
I'm really glad you've made these videos. I feel that my interest in Lego decreased after Bionicle G2 ended, but these videos are so interesting that they basically reminded me why I loved these toys in the first place. This is why I look forward to any type of content you produce and I can't wait to see what else you have in store.
Fond my Rock Slizer and Power Roborider... In a goddamn drug store. Chose the latter because he had arms. By the time I went looking for Onyx to make the combiner, they were out of stock (and discontinued). Major props should be given to the artist(s) who drew the Roboriders' backgrounds. As a kid, it made me wish I could have those as my playground. xD Such sweet memories... ;-)
You know some themes I rarely hear people talk about? Jack Stone, Alpha Team, and Knights Kingdom (Lego's other action figure line) Though some Bionicle and Hero Factory fans know Knights Kingdom because of their parts. Those were other Lego themes I used to follow aside from Bionicle, Hero Factory, and Exo-Force.
FireFury190 I know that people hate jack stone, but I think that his sets were OK. They had some cool alternate builds and were a good alternate to duplo for little kids. Now knights kingdom (the one with the rainbow armored guys) was kick ass. They had tons of features and a classic good v evil story. I still have lord vladeks castle and the complete last wave built in my basement
The 2000s were a stellar decade to be a constraction fan. Growing up I had gen 1 Bionicle along with Exo-Force and Knights' Kingdom. These three themes each offered wildly different takes on the "buildable action figure" concept, and that variety was amazing. Sadly, now that CCBS is dead constraction seems to be a thing of the past. The Minecraft bigfigs are pretty fun but I can't think of many other modern examples.
@@kumatorahaltmanndreemurr Considering how many mechs Lego puts into their original lines I'm surprised they haven't brought back Exo-Force. Given that the whole line's theme is mechs. But I guess it just isn't as large a brand to reboot like Bionicle is.
I LOVED the Slizers and Robo Riders. I had all of the figures. They were amazing and I wish there'd be something like this today (if there is, please tell me). Collecting them was fun.
Pov: you just found a sealed slizer at an antique store and you only bought it because you vaguely remember someone mentioning "slizer" as a bionicle predecessor of sorts
I just realized that the Slizer mini comics are almost EXACTLY the same as the pack-in 2016 Bionicle reboot comics Like, it even looks like they got the same artist for them too with how stylized the G2 characters look
The set at 8:12 is a set to this day i still wish I had lmao. I always found the "big" technic figures so interesting and really was drawn into the whole theme of that set especially. Meanwhile I think my brother and I collectively had every single technic riders set. And oh boy I completely forgot that combiner model was not only a thing but used the actual canister lids in it's construction. Lego was...wild back then xD
OMG Slizers!!! I knew that there was something before Bionicle! Now I recall having at least one of those, searching for those damn discs all over my room with each throw...
6:02 THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE FOR!!! ITS A LAUNCHER!! IVE GOT ONE OF THOSE STUFFED SOMEWHERE IN MY LEGO BIN!! I always thought it was a knock off or for something else entirely
My first Technic set was the tan Battle Droid! The magnetic hand/pistol holster was pretty well engineered. Had no idea Lego had plans for vending machines and how did that "Guardians of the Galaxy" detail make it past legal?
I think I remember being really into the Slizers when they were a thing, but not so much the Roboriders. One weird thing I do remember about those was how one of the pictures you would get on the collectible wheels looked an awful lot like an enemy from Quake 2... Guess choosing that to base a face off makes sense if it's supposed to be "metal". Though, when you think about where it comes from, it's surprising it's that industrial metal and not more like viking power metal. :D I guess it's not the last time Lego would have a thing for industrial metal either, though. I vaguely remember the competition line too... I think I had some fun putting those together and taking them apart and figuring out how those extending arms actually worked.
Old man flipping through through Divry's translator: "..allow.. able.. ance...", looked up at me behind spec's, says---->"Ha ha HAA!" You were a bit young? I was a bit too old.. espec when the figs started evolving... was gonna wait and finish the series but since you asked here heck yeah, you've done great with this choice.. Dude!.. I ha-ha-had no idea what one could do (Edt.)with these thanks man
Bionicle has influenced and inspired me in more than 1 way, my love for writing and my skill of writing came from Bionicle, heck I read the entirety of 2001-2005 in 1 day, not to mention it got me into the MOCing community, plus it gave me a new outlook on life and how we are not alone and that in comparison to the universe we are small but together anyone can do either great things or give into our insanity, and chances are if it wasn't for Bionicle I wouldn't be who I am today, my first truly good story was a Bionicle fanfiction, I have an entire blog dedicated to achieving my MOCs, sorry if it sounds like I'm fanboying... because I am Bionicle is not just a toy line, heck it's not even just a lego theme, Bionicle is an experience not to be forgotten, its experience with something that we can all learn from, never give up.
I was thinking about a new toy line and story that would pay tribute to all of Constraction’s history. Call it "Bionicle Generations"; and despite the title, it's a mega crossover of all the Constraction themes from Championship to Bionicle G2. (through small sets under the "Stars" class, even stuff like Chima and KK2 is included) Each figure uses an improved version of the G2 Bionicle system with more support for old parts. Launchers would compliment other functions with Slizer engineering, with mostly the generic launchers being used (think the Zamors, stud launchers, plate launchers, flick-fire, and Championship missile), but the Kanoka and Rhotuka might be fun to resurrect.
Slizers and (to a lesser degree) Roboriders are very nostalgic to me. I was kinda sad when they got replaced by Bionicle, especially since (ignoring all the lore and focusing on sets themselves) Slizers were definitely more varied than Toa mata. I still remember the day my parents bought me my first Slizer, Judge. I eventually got most of them with the exception of Fire, Ice, City and Spark of the mutants. Few months ago I rebuilt them and put them on a shelf, although I'm still missing some parts of Blaster and I have no idea where Millennium is. Out of Roboriders I had Onyx, Dust and those four mini sets.
I once won the Granite Throwbot in a contest when I was really little...and then I lost it years ago when we moved. Sigh... But HOLY GADUKNA, THIS WAS METAL AS KARZAHNI!
You know, I remember an old lego mania magazine that mentioned that the Throwbots were built by aliens in a distant galaxy and after ages of self-maintenece, became their own species. I wonder how this would have come across in comics or animations, especially in the old Flash animations that Lego used to do in the early 2000s?
You know, if you look at the artwork for the Roboriders canisters, you'll see that some of the virus-spawned creatures look a lot like what you see in Bionicle's early artwork. For example, the cracks in the wrecking balls attacking Power look a lot like the cracks in the black stone the Matoran use to represent Makuta Teridax. There were even plans to make elemental creatures like that for the Toa to battle, but they scrapped them. Personally, I'm glad they did, because the Rahi were awesome for back in the day!
Since Childhood I'm a huge lego fan, but lego technic never interested me. Totally different stuff to built with, no studs, and mostly just boring vehicles.... then Slicers showed up, something you can have adventures with and collect, certainly was fun. Same with roboriders. And huge respect to these two, basicly building the ground for the best to come... Bionicle was freakin huge. The story/story-arcs, the characters, the lore you could follow online and with comics. It was just amazing. Heck I got me all main 6 of the first bionicle series and boy was it fun to replay the lore and even make some own stories up.
I remember when Lego Technic used to look like Lego still rather than models. Fair enough though things change but I do miss the eighties in this sense. 8846 my personal fave
At 2006, the Bionicle designers clearly focused purely on form, with the only function being an entirely separate toy launcher that was just slapped on.
I am PRETTY sure I had the Power RoboRider. Him or Dust. I remember thinking about it a lot when I started getting Bionicle and wondering what happened to them, since as a five year old I didn't understand how waves of toys worked. Though I might have preferred ThrowBots since I was and still am definitely more a robot guy than a vehicle guy.
I love how you gave Turbo a Boomhauer voice.

Man I'd love for Bionicle to return. They were my favorite LEGO theme. I'd be happy with either a continuation of G1 or another reboot.
I remember seeing the slizers and roborider ads in the lego magazine and instantly being drawn to them. It led to my love of Bionicle.

Thank you. The episodes only get better from here.
OH MY GOD THE COMIC READING WAS BEAUTIFUL ty for this gift
That's all I remember. Stopped tracking newer Lego sets around that time... Had no idea these sets from video were that old😞
I wish there were eight sliders in that comic rather than one. Those slipper voices were so entertaining!!!
I really liked you doing these history type videos. It would be cool to see you do more videos like this in the future.
Sometime, sure.
In the comic the red letters say “take them for a spin”.
Very interesting retrospective yet again! I had never made the connection between the 2001 Rahi and the TECHNIC competition sets. Great job!
The roborider description s with tough the fire and flames is pure gold!
As a kid, it made me wish I could have those as my playground. xD
Such sweet memories...
I'll get to those themes, don't worry.
FireFury190 I know that people hate jack stone, but I think that his sets were OK. They had some cool alternate builds and were a good alternate to duplo for little kids. Now knights kingdom (the one with the rainbow armored guys) was kick ass. They had tons of features and a classic good v evil story. I still have lord vladeks castle and the complete last wave built in my basement
omg somebody else remembers Jack Stone bruh I thought everybody forgot about that series good times good times
But I guess it just isn't as large a brand to reboot like Bionicle is.
i never knew about slizers or throwbots until this channel, somewhere some latent memory of the marketing is like "I WAS HERE THE ENTIRE TIME"
6:21 Nice use of "Through the Fire and the Flames" by Dragonforce!
That turbo voice was perfect
“A tiny constraction baby” made me choke on my cigarette dhdhshdhdhsjd
I LOVED the Slizers and Robo Riders. I had all of the figures. They were amazing and I wish there'd be something like this today (if there is, please tell me). Collecting them was fun.
Slizers are my childhood. I almost had forgotten them. Cheers, Nick.
Pov: you just found a sealed slizer at an antique store and you only bought it because you vaguely remember someone mentioning "slizer" as a bionicle predecessor of sorts
I just realized that the Slizer mini comics are almost EXACTLY the same as the pack-in 2016 Bionicle reboot comics
Like, it even looks like they got the same artist for them too with how stylized the G2 characters look
Dude, I love these videos! I might be a year late, but I've been enjoying them!
man lego was hella metal back in the day
I've got them all, except Onyx, the earth RoboRider, and the only one with glowing wheels! Still intending to buy one to complete the collections ...
Those Visorak propellers were way worse in that regard.
6:21 THROUGH THE FIRE AND THE FLAMES WE CARRY ON - sorry, I got distracted...
Slizers may get the ignominious title of "proto-Bionicles" but man do I have a special love for that theme.
Throwbots were awesome, definitely the proto-Bionicle, I love how they would utilize mini-fig tools.
I guess it's not the last time Lego would have a thing for industrial metal either, though.
I vaguely remember the competition line too... I think I had some fun putting those together and taking them apart and figuring out how those extending arms actually worked.
How dare you use through the fire and flames to give me nostalgia for a theme I never heard of as a kid!
*the comic book red letters because I’m home sick*
T A K E T H E M F O R A S P I N
9:00 those Lego ads bring back so many memories....
Oh man nostalgia hitting hard. The slizers and roboriders were the shit.
Dude!.. I ha-ha-had no idea what one could do (Edt.)with these thanks man
Bionicle has influenced and inspired me in more than 1 way, my love for writing and my skill of writing came from Bionicle, heck I read the entirety of 2001-2005 in 1 day, not to mention it got me into the MOCing community, plus it gave me a new outlook on life and how we are not alone and that in comparison to the universe we are small but together anyone can do either great things or give into our insanity, and chances are if it wasn't for Bionicle I wouldn't be who I am today, my first truly good story was a Bionicle fanfiction, I have an entire blog dedicated to achieving my MOCs, sorry if it sounds like I'm fanboying... because I am Bionicle is not just a toy line, heck it's not even just a lego theme, Bionicle is an experience not to be forgotten, its experience with something that we can all learn from, never give up.
roborider really reminds me of Hotwheels Accelaraces
Thank you so much for 4:17
Pretty good thoughts. If you need an idea, you could explore the early Lego Castle.
There are other themes I have lined up for future episodes. It's just a matter of "are they worth making?"
NickonAquaMagna I would say yes.
fuck yeah
im liking this series
me to
I was thinking about a new toy line and story that would pay tribute to all of Constraction’s history.
It just hit me- the fire toa metru looks like Samus.
Vakama I think was made to look like toa lhikan
Also
*metroid save station jingle*
I enjoyed this series and am looking forward to the next episode!
another great rewind.
Wow m8, best Lego series I have seen and I only in episode 5.
I’ve got the Lava Roborider head. I thought it was a Bionicle piece but upon looking it up on bricklink I learned otherwise.
I once won the Granite Throwbot in a contest when I was really little...and then I lost it years ago when we moved. Sigh...
But HOLY GADUKNA, THIS WAS METAL AS KARZAHNI!
13:53 "Technically speaking, it'll turn. you. on."
Personally, I'm glad they did, because the Rahi were awesome for back in the day!
crazy how what i thought of as "the Bionicle pieces" go so far back even to the 70's and 80's
I am a big fan of the technic Models of today so i loved to see the origins of them
In case anyone is wondering, the answer to the puzzle in 4:59 is "They take them for a spin"
Wow, you actually put Trough The Fire And Flames by Dragonforce in the background!? That was really awesome!🤘🏻
The edge warranted it.
I real liked the slicer throwing arms I used to but them on my gen 1 Bionicles as a kid
Half of the Throwbots were bad guys? Could've fooled me, I always assumed all eight were heroes.
"Take them for a spin"
The Dustforce Soundtrack. classic
I have just bought volume 2 of planet ripple, volume 2 just got shiped, also i have loved these nostalgic look backs to legos past
Thanks!
They need to bring back the lego technic guys. I've still got a couple of them from when I was young.
The voices are brilliant :)
