It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it put Sigourney Weaver on the map, it made $200 million dollars against a $12 million dollar budget, it spawned 3 Sequels, 2 spinoff/prequel films, 2 crossover films, video games, comics, novels, toys, board games, novelizations, and an upcoming live action TV series based on the movie, it's considered to be one of the scariest motion pictures ever made.
Before Ridley Scott directed the film, Robert Aldrich, Jack Clayton, and Robert Altman were considered for the job.
Harrison Ford was considered to play the role of Capt Arthur Dallas, but he dropped out to star in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.
Meryl Streep, Carrie Fisher and Katherine Ross were considered for the role of Ripley, which went to Sigourney Weaver.
Jon Finch was cast as Howard Kane, but suffered a bronchial attack and John Herd was brought in as a last minute replacement.
For the scene to have the cat Jones hissing at the alien, they had a muzzled Doberman hiding behind a cardboard box and when they removed the box, the cat was hissing at the dog off camera.

"Will you just listen to the man?!" Dallas referring to Ash as a "man" was such a cool little detail. It's a tiny little brush stroke of detail that you don't notice up front because it was delivered as fact. It introduces an element of humanity to Ash that gets violently ripped away when it's revealed he's an android. Minute details you don't always notice make amazing stories.

What I also love about her character arc is that, at first, they try to portray Ripley as a very by the book officer, kind of obnoxious and snob to make us not like her very much. And as everything goes to shit, she is progressively shown as a natural leader, the only one who trully had her head on her shoulders the whole time and also a very brave, but also very human and empathetic person.
I remember that when I watched the movie for the first time as a teen in the early 2000s, I didn't know Sigourney Weaver all that much. And at first I didn't like Ripley at all. But the more the movie went on, the more I absolutely loved her. By the end of the movie, she was one of my favorite movie character ever and she still is today.

the creature effects with the alien egg is still one of those effects that amaze me to this day. it looks so fantastic and real. (better than any of the sequels imo) the way the light showed through the outside and the way the thing wiggled inside it. the movement felt very real and insect-like. the white veiny stuff around the opening of the egg; apparently they used animal parts.. stomach lining for that and other stuff for the interior. (and seafood for the underside of the facehugger). to make the embryo flutter inside when the light shined through, apparently that was ridley scott's own hand making the movements.

Ripley is just so well written character. She obey´s the protocol because protcol is there for a reason. She has more common sense that majority heroes in next 20 years put together. She doesn´t have magical abilties but most of her abilities are established being part of the crew or her common sense. She doesn´t magically get kungfu skills or know how to pilot multimillion dollar devices first time. She´s hard working, person with a lot common senses. She makes good decisions constantly based on knowledge she has. She put immense effort to fight of new type of creature and she prevails not because of deus ex machina plot. She learns every encounter and makes as good decision as its possible right there and then. Too bad most other crew just sabotage her.

I have 5 sisters and I still remember their screams when that alien dropped down for the first time behind Brett. It was absolutely crazy how they screamed, being it was right after the chest buster scene, which was traumatic by the way, they all expected it to be just a baby still. WOW, such a great moment. This movie in its day was THE MOVIE to watch, a masterpiece of cinema. Your reactions, facial expressions and commentary were exactly how we all were, being a Latin family you can imagine how vocal and dramatic we all were, especially the women, and I grew up with 5 sisters, my mother and my aunt, 7 women, so you can imagine the screams and cussing they were doing, lol. In general, I explain the logic: Alien met Ripley for the first time near the entrance to the Shuttle, there was most likely only one passage. The heroine thought that he went in the opposite direction in search of her when she disappeared without first getting to the Shuttle, but apparently the monster is smart, and realized where she was originally going, and thus outsmarted her by climbing there and hiding too. Although, of course, not smart enough to directly understand that the ship is about to explode.

  • @oxhine
    @oxhine Год назад +2

Hey, Clariss! This is one of the greatest and most influential horror films of all time!
I prefer the original THEATRICAL CUT you saw because I feel it's paced better and lacks a scene which contradicts the sequel. However, the Director's Cut boasts a moment when Veronica Cartwright smacks the crap out of Sigourney Weaver which definitely SHOULD HAVE BEEN in the Theatrical Cut!
Despite preferring the Theatrical Cut for the first movie, there is ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION that you must watch the SPECIAL EDITION with longer runtime of the sequel, "ALIENS"!!!!!!! There are critical additional scenes that add context to the movie and it is the version director James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver themselves prefer.
Director Ridley Scott kept the entire cast in the dark about the famous CHESTBURSTING scene except for John Hurt. Their reactions were absolutely genuine and mirrored the audience's response! Veronica Cartwright got sprayed by fake blood and fell over backward. They only filmed the scene twice. It remains one of the most ICONIC IN CINEMA HISTORY!
The PACING is deliberately slow at the beginning to acquaint the audience with the ship's geography, to demonstrate authentic-looking space travel and maneuvers, to familiarize the audience with the crew, to establish the threat posed by the creature and to generate suspense with the mystery of the derelict craft. There's a lot of rich character humor and foreshadowing in those crew interaction scenes as well as a subtext about this future society being a corporate dystopia. "Alien" is set in the year 2122.
This movie and "Star Wars" changed the future aesthetic from antiseptic cleanliness to lived-in, worn-out dinginess.
The Swiss artist, H.R. GIGER, who designed the xenomorph, tapped into insectoid and reptilian features that evoke primal fear. His artwork is very bizarre, erotic and has a distinctive look called Giger-esque. The final product is an iconic movie monster that is pure NIGHTMARE FUEL! The creature's life-cycle and biology is explored throughout the series. By the way, the alien's retractable inner jaw is found in nature in a deep-sea fish!
THE WEYLAND-YUTANI COMPANY is an international conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar travel and terra-forming. They have a stake in every colony world and are basically the 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. They are a ruthless corporation looking to exploit or weaponize the xenomorph for profit regardless of the negative consequences. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of all the Alien movies. In the "AvP" films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani.
This crew is not a group of explorers, scientists or colonists. They're just SPACE TRUCKERS hauling rocks. This was a First Contact situation they were wholly unqualified for. Hence, all the bumbling and bad judgment calls. Their chief concerns were company policy and pay inequity. Ripley was the only one with the willingness to make difficult command decisions that would have saved all their lives except for Kane's had she not been undermined by Ash. Of course, Ash was privy to a secret corporate mandate.
Like most Captains, Dallas had an inherently CALM DEMEANOR. By minimizing the situation, it prevents both him and the crew from panicking. You can tell he's very worried because he seeks counsel from Mother. He also acknowledges his culpability for the predicament by preventing Ripley from volunteering to go into the shafts and by shouldering that burden himself. He accepted this task not even knowing if fire would be effective! His last act is a rather valiant gesture and I always feel bad for him despite his initial missteps.
Parker is MY FAVORITE supporting character! Yaphet Kotto played him to the hilt! He's the blue collar EVERYMAN who just cares about payday and who enjoys deliberately antagonizing his superiors but ends up sacrificing himself for a fellow employee. He's also the only one who made a move on the chestburster before being stopped by Ash!
Some viewers strongly believe the alien raped Lambert! This is nonsense. The PREHENSILE TAIL probably drew her closer to itself so it could mouth-punch her with the retractable jaw. Those viewers aren't mistaken for perceiving phallic eroticism, though, as that was Scott's intent.
The giant elephant-headed alien pilot of the derelict spacecraft is one of the GREAT MYSTERIES of the franchise. Was he a zoologist, a bio-warfare specialist, an exterminator, a trader in exotic organisms, a waste disposal tech or a trucker like Ripley's crew? No one knows.
Sigourney Weaver became a FEMINIST ICON because of this movie. Ripley is one in a long line of strong female characters that have been showcased in sci-fi and fantasy dating back to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars, in 1911! There's not a man I know who wouldn't follow Ripley into hell.
You must see the SPECIAL EDITION of "Aliens" and the ASSEMBLY CUT of "Alien 3" because those versions greatly enhance both films.
If you intend to see the "ALIEN vs. PREDATOR" films, then you need to acquaint yourself with the PREDATOR franchise. The first is an action classic with Schwarzenegger. Danny Glover's underrated urban-set "Predator 2" features some memorable set pieces. Dark Horse comics explored the crossover concept inspiring Hollywood to make two crossover films with moderately successful to excellent results. They're fun and exciting guilty pleasures with the second one, "ALIENS vs. PREDATOR: REQUIEM", being particularly lean and mean. There is also a "PREDATORS" film produced by Robert Rodriguez that is definitely worth a look. "THE PREDATOR" (2018) REBOOT, however, should be avoided at all costs; it's a franchise-killer! "PREY" is an 18th-century-set prequel to the original film that was released on Hulu last summer! The Alien films have a RICHER SUBTEXT while the Predator films are more ACTION FARE but they're both fun sci-fi thrillers. Below is a VIEWING ORDER and an INTERNAL CHRONOLOGY:

Hi Clariss, it's great you've seen this sci fi classic and I loved your reaction to it :) it was filmed in England, the refinery the Notstomo pulls is over a mile wide and the movie's writer Dan O'Bannon got the idea of the facehugger/chestburster from a dream! Please react to it's awesome sequel Aliens (1986) as soon as you can :) it's directed by James Cameron as is one of the best sequels of all time! I love your channel/reactions and I'm subscribed. Keep up the fantastic work that you do :)

A young encore viewer is boarding the "Nostromo." Practical effects make "old movies" look better than current DFX/CGI-drenched productions. A very animated reaction, considering that she's seen/analyzed this film before. 23:18 That was what was going through my mind during the first half hour of "Alien3" (1992).

Fun fact, the end scene where Ripley is in her tiny undies. Originally they wanted her to be fully nude to show the fragility of humans. But since that would have pushed NC-17 territory, they just found the smallest undies they could for her to wear.

@20:45 The optimistic interpretation is that the alien stabbed Lambert in the back with its tail while distracting her from the front. However, the scene was shot in an intentionally ambiguous way. An early draft of the script implied that the crew entertained themselves on long voyages with casual sex. This was cut as the plotline was deemed too distracting, but in that version the Lambert kill takes on certain unpleasant undertones.

The practical effects are really well done, also the minatures, the models, the whole set, the lightning and everything else! They all did such a great job!

Giger really built that "alien life form", the one that has exploded from the inside. It's called the "space jockey", and it was on display at the Hollywood theatre during the showing of the movie. Unfortunately it caught fire and was destroyed.
The blue "laser light" over the eggs Kane finds inside the ship were lasers from the stageshow by The Who, who were set up next to the set. Ridley borrowed them for the scene.

In space no one can hear you scream! Ridley Scott really delivered the goods throughout the runtime of Alien especially the production value, the scares, the effects, acting, directing, even the score from Academy Award Winning composer Jerry Goldsmith (1976 The Omen) were all masterfully constructed to create a claustrophobic and terrifying atmosphere as well as a hostile environment. Sigourney Weaver will forever be known as the original badass heroine Ellen Ripley in the highest grossing film of 1979. It’s only wise to go as far as to view the sequel Aliens because that self destruct sequence scene was the perfect metaphor for the future of the franchise after Aliens.

The Alien was played by the late Bolaji Badejo who was 6'10 and his arms were to long for his body, once he was in that suit he could not sit down because of the alien's tail so they made him a swing.
