This song was so special to my mother, so here's a small memorial to her for anyone who might like to read it. She was so funny and clumsy. When I was a kid we would sit in the kitchen and listen to music while she cooked dinner, sometimes we would make parodies to whatever was on the radio. Her cooking was unmatched, heavenly. We would watch the sunset almost every summer night, she said there were never 2 alike. She was right. She taught me to stick up for myself, even if it meant the school would call home. She taught me that I should love anytime I get the chance. Rest in peace, mom, gone too soon.

I can say a lot about my mom but she made me the person I am today. Strong, capable and loving. She left us Saturday, I spent the week prior in the hospital with her. I bought a shitty guitar and played this song I don't know how many times for her. RIP our mothers.

I used to sing this song to my 3 younger kids who. They'd come for home visits on the weekends. So my oldest son , Shea, moved out and on his own.
One evening him and his girlfriend showed up with a guitar . Shea had taught him self to play this song on the guitar. That night I cried and cried . I never thought I ever made a good impression in his life. But he said he loved when I sang ro them when they were little that any time he was going threw something in life, that he'd play some song that I once sang to them . That was also the night hom and his gf Bailee told me I was going to be a grandma for the first time. ... music definitely has gotten me and my kids through some difficult times In our lives

Wagon Wheel - The Against Me! cover is one of the greatest songs of all time.
In high school we would play this song in the car all the time. Whenever the song played noone was allowed to talk and the windows had to be rolled down even if it was raining. We would dive through the countryside with this song playing.
    Truly beautiful.

Heading down south to the land of the pines
I'm thumbing my way into North Caroline
Staring up the road and pray to God I see headlights
I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Picking me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a-hopin' for Raleigh, I can see my baby tonight
So rock me momma like a wagon wheel
Rock me momma any way you feel
    Hey, momma rock me
Rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train
    Hey, momma rock me
I'm running from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old time string band
My baby plays a guitar, I pick a banjo now
Oh, north country winters keep a-getting me down
Lost my money playing poker so I had to leave town
But I ain't turning back to living that old life no more
So rock me momma like a wagon wheel
Rock me momma any way you feel
    Hey, momma rock me
Hey, rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train
    Hey, momma rock me
Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
Caught a trucker out of Philly had a nice long toke
But he's a heading west from the Cumberland gap
    To Johnson City, Tennessee
And I gotta get a move on before the sun
I hear my baby calling my name and I know that she's the only one
And if I die in Raleigh at least I will die free
So rock me momma like a wagon wheel
Rock me momma any way you feel
    Hey, momma rock me
Oh, rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train
    Hey momma rock me
Oh, so rock me momma like a wagon wheel
Rock me momma any way you feel
Hey, momma rock me (mama rock me, mama rock me)
Rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train
Hey, ey yeah momma rock me (you can rock me, rock me)

It's amazing Bob Dylan just wrote the chorus, threw it away, and everyone else took his scraps and covered it..I think Old Crow Medicine Show took the chorus and wrote some verses to it first, then Darius Rucker Covered their version, and so on and so forth..

    • @alexbanks8429
      @alexbanks8429 10 лет назад +8

Against Me! did ok with it, Darius did it a bit better, but OCMS did it best by far.

Alex Banks Rucker sucked. Against Me! brought their flavor to an OCMS song. Dylan gets some credit but not much.

      @caitbee674 10 лет назад +2

I agree with Alex. I like Against Me!s version .. but I wouldn't go as far as to say Rucker sucks. Just cause he's not your style of music... doesn't mean it's shite. They are all great and different ... but keeping it true to the song. I'm a huge fan of this song... and get excited when anyone covers it...

Folk is a genre based on tradition. Some songs have been covered so many times it's impossible to distinguish the original writer, for example, House of the Rising Sun. I think that no matter who covers the song, it should be appreciated because they're keeping the beauty of the tradition alive.

That feeling of passing something cool on to other people, so they can feel a bit of what you did. maybe you change it slightly by virtue of being someone else in a different place, a different time, maybe those people you share it with go on to change it a little more when they share the song, the tone shifts but the heart always remains.
I love it when Against me! in particular has folk elements because- This band has that feeling in spades for me. When I first listened to a lot of against me! tracks, I was just a confused kid- full of Punk Rock angst... and dark shameful secrets I would never dream of telling another soul.
It meant so much to know that all of that time, she really did feel the same way that I did.
We got there in the end :D.

For the record this isn't Against Me! Its just Tom Gable. He did it for a charity fundraiser cd. And for those who are saying Dylan never did this song, he only wrote the chorus. It was featured as part of another song on some demo or something and the guy from OCMS heard it and turned it into a full song.

The ignorance of the beauty of Southern culture cracks me up.
Men call their women 'Mama' not because they view them as their own mother, but the mother of their children. You see, we stay with our women even when they're pregnant. Even more shockingly we stick around to raise our children.

"Rock me mama like the wind and the rain, rock me mama like a southbound train." Let the tension ease out because sometimes you got to relaxed from all the shit in this world like buying flowers to girls who don't love and sticking with bands that don't know you. I love this band, Teenage Anarchist to Thrash to this. Because all their music is art in the purest form in my book.

Headed down south to the land of the pines
And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
    Starin' up the road
Pray to God I see headlights
I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a hopin' for Raleigh
I can see my baby tonight
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
    Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a southbound train
    Hey mama rock me
Runnin' from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time string band
    My baby plays the guitar
    I pick a banjo now
Oh, the North country winters keep a gettin' me now
Lost my money playin' poker so I had to up and leave
    But I ain't a turnin' back
To livin' that old life no more
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
    Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
    Hey mama rock me
Walkin' due south out of Roanoke
I caught a trucker out of Philly
    Had a nice long toke
But he's a headed west from the Cumberland Gap
    To Johnson City, Tennessee
And I gotta get a move on before the sun
I hear my baby callin' my name
And I know that she's the only one
And if I die in Raleigh
At least I will die free
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
    Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
    Hey mama rock me

I think the appeal to this version is because its tuned down a half step, which gives everything that haunting sound. I love every version of this tune though, the original is unreal
