  • I set out to explore some more areas of the forest
    Before setting up for a Tarp and Bivy Camp.
    Trying a new system for the first time, NO SLEEPING BAG !
    I found that the idea is sound for maybe the Spring and Autumn but I encountered a few issues with the temperature down to 2/3 degrees

    Another great camp. Your videos are very relaxing to watch, and I also enjoy hearing the way Brits talk. “Mooching about” seems to mean wandering around, but here in the States “mooching” is slang for taking advantage of people and getting their goods for free. 😃 I also didn’t realize you had Uncle Ben’s rice over there. Love that pitch; your setups always look so tight and wrinkle free! Blessings to you and the UK! Cheers from Pennsylvania.

      Hi and thanks for watching from afar, yes the language differences do make us laugh,
      I have to get a tight tarp as we have so much wind in Northumberland
      Cheers from the uk

    It was nice to see you taking this on.
    I do the same, though with a Softie suit.
    You can go colder. I've gone to -6C, no sleeping gear, clothing layers and Softie trousers (not jacket) The secret was two sets of handwarmers in the top pocket of a gillet and two Curaheat pads stuck to the inside of a gillet. A wool shirt over the gillet to keep the warmth in, but also, layers under the gillet so that the heat itself doesn't reach the body. The warm air is trapped and gives plenty of comfort without being uncomfortable if you know what I mean? Oh, the -6C was in a bus shelter lol

      Hi and thanks for watching, interesting comments, and good idea to keep the heater away from the body yet still be warm,
      I will be trying this again
      Cheers Adrian

      @northumberlandmountainhopper Just to give you context and as much info as possible; this was an urban survival test/experiment, hence no sleeping gear.
      I was not laid on the cold floor but instead, sat in a camping chair, insulated with a half of a cheap roll mat. My legs were not in contact with anything at all, just the lip of the heel of my boots being in contact with the cold ground. I noticed that if I crossed my legs, the cold was felt straight away where the insulation was flattened.
      This was a survival test which I did very comfortably apart from getting zero sleep and being very bored.
      You'll need to experiment yourself to find the right formula for sleeping. I suggest a Snugpak jungle bag added to what you had, that and handwarmers should take you to a little below zero. All the best.

      @northumberlandmountainhopper  6 дней назад

      @@mallyredfearn6834hi,my objective was can I do it and keep the weight down, if I got the jungle bag it’s a bit heavier than my 3 season sleeping bag,but it’s a good thought as it saves taking a heavy sleeping bag.
      Great thoughts and ideas
      Cheers Adrian

    I slept out at -11’c in thermal underwear and new Carinthia Defence 4 bag. In a tent. Was plenty warm enough. No hat, gloves or socks.
    Great experiment my concern would be condensation in the Bivi
    I know you said none, but wet down loses all insulation.

    • @northumberlandmountainhopper
      @northumberlandmountainhopper  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi and thanks for watching, those army bags are good but heavy,
      I didn’t suffer any condensation, the worry could be, if I did the down clothes would be wet and then no good for keeping me warm, it was an interesting experiment as was yours.
      I may well do it again in the spring
      Cheers

    Hi and thanks for watching
    Trousers are Rab Argon so very good but not as thick as the jacket, it will be a perfect set up for the spring and autumn with a lighter down jacket and for this weather with a light sleeping bag, so still weight and space saved over lugging the Ascent 1100,
    in this weather I will only save 900 grams but it all helps
    Cheers for the interest and ideas

    Looks so close to our landscape in northern New England! Tarps are the only way to go. I have to burn wood when I get out, its a fault of mine! So small chairs for me (at 61 yrs old & 6'4"/76cm) makes it a pain feeding wood but what can ya do??

    Thinking outside the box 👍. Can I ask how you like the dd 2x2 compared to the 3x3?

    • @northumberlandmountainhopper
      @northumberlandmountainhopper  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi and thanks for watching, with my style of bivy camping it’s much better as I can pitch it at 45 degrees and sleep under it with just the leg end out of the tarp, easier to set up if it’s windy, it’s just a shame it’s not a super light version, the super light tarp s is 2.8 x 1.5 so can’t get under as good and the 2.8 is a bit long
      Cheers

    • @wobba1981
      @wobba1981 6 месяцев назад

      @@northumberlandmountainhopper thank you for the response, I didn’t even realise a 2x2 was a dd option!, in all the years it’s the first I’ve come across it. Would love to see a video with you comparing the tarps you have including the magic carpets. I can see the benefits of a 2x2 for sure as the 3x3 can sometimes be on the larger size depending on the purpose it’s being used for 👍
