Have to give them credit. The Bears managed to win even though they had already thrown in the towel.
Thank you.
Da Da Dun Tsk.

Well done 🤣😂😂
Good catch by the ref, it's against the rules to bring a towel out to dry the field, it has to be napkins
Although, some might call them “paper towels.”
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Toliet paper*
😄😄😄
Or tissue paper😏
this has to be the wackiest penalty ever, never thought you can get a penalty for drying the field with a towel lmao
well thats kinda chetaing if u think about it
Then they shouldn’t be able to clear away the snow during snow games then
@@codydarnick5685 they can if it's only with their bodies (hands/feet) - bringing objects onto the field to aid the game play is forbidden (like the announcer said, it's a very obscure rule). it was all because of that snow plow at the patriots game in the 70s that allowed the kicker to make the game-winning score.
Who tf does that I guess they don’t wanna recreate the wild card kick
Only in Chicago.............
Possibly the most unsportsmanlike conduct I've ever seen! That is a disgusting act by Trenton Gill! 🤣🤣
Randy Moss could never
I used to think the neck slash was bad... but jesus christ, ... a wet towel?!? I cant believe they showed that on the broadcast
imagine trying to help your teammate from slipping tho, absolutely horrendous
Jeez these guys will do anything, no matter how dubious like towels, to win. He's obviously a problem child.
@@noahhomyak9477 not to mention having to kick on a field that damn wet is like asking for a torn acl
This has to be the corniest penalty I've ever seen
Lol at this point players are going to get flagged for sneezing.
You must have never watched golf lol
It's because the niners didn't get a chance to dry off the field
Nah, Juju getting flagged for flat backing Burfect like a boss in retaliation for all his dirty plays was the corniest penalty ever.
This rule has been in place for a very long time (1982 to be exact) and it was due to what is deemed the "Snowplow Game". An ex-con had a snowplow for the Patriots sideline as they played the Dolphins in a scoreless game into the 4th quarter. The Patriots drove down the field and when it came time to attempt a 33yd FG the ex-con cleared that portion of the field so the kicker had an easy chip shot. He converted and the Pats won the game 3-0. A rule change was immediately put into place and has been there ever since that you cannot tamper with the field with outside help (i.e. a big towel that no player on the field would ever have on their person). It's not a corny rule. That's the literal definition of advantage over the other team as their footing was in worse conditions at that point due to the water being soaked up.
Good job refs, that was a really good call way to go guys.
They don’t make the rules
It is. What you don’t want them to enforce the rules?
"a player is forbidden to dry off the grass with a towel", this is totally a rule, yes
@@zwykyziomek2570 you can’t bring foreign objects on the field to mess with the grass, it makes sense, both teams gotta deal with the rain.
Look up the snow plow game
This goes back to when the Patriots brought a snow plow driven by a prisoner on work release, onto the field to plow a spot in the snow for a field goal to win against the Dolphins.
Don Shula was on the rules committee and I believe he is responsible for the rule.
Yep. I remember it.
Blah, They tried it in Miami. Patriots brought their snow plow guy, and everyone was like... yo, this is Miami. Its why the Patriots are garbage in Miami... because snow plow guy is a couple hours away in Tampa winning superbowls.
lol I looked that up thinking it was a joke thanks
wow patriots been cheating longer than i thought
It would have been funny malicious compliance for the rest of the rules committee to agree to pass a rule that: *"No prisoner on work release may use a snow plow to plow snow for a field goal during a game."*
Who knew Shula’s whinging 40 years ago about the Snowplow game would bite the Bears in the ass.
Just kick the damn ball

Obscure rules for the win
What??!! I can see giving a delay of game penalty, though I feel even that's a bit on the harsh side. Unsportsmanlike conduct??!! C'mon NFL. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
He did leave the towel on the field though. I would consider that unsportsmanlike, if the kick was blocked the play could easily have went in that direction and directly affected the result of the play.
@@reccemdown That’s a stretch, but good reasoning!
Check the snow plow game between the Dolphins and Patriots in the 1980s.
Lots of people have mentioned it now, since it’s the source of the rule. But does anyone else find it ironic that, even though it was not in New England this time, the Patriots and Dolphins played their first Divisional match against each other in 2022 today?
@@reccemdown The towel on the field was not the reasoning for the misconduct. He could have tucked it in his belt and it would have been the same penalty. It had nothing to do with the towel sitting on the field affecting the game. Players towels always fall off their person in games. You don't see misconduct called for that 😂
@@reccemdown The misconduct was for his actions of using outside sources to clear the field
So this is an interesting case, as there are technically two penalties that could have been called - a 5-yard penalty or the (as-called) 15-yard penalty. Rules to be aware for this situation:
A.R. 11.77 HOLDER BRINGS A TOWEL ONTO THE FIELD PRIOR TO SETTING UP FOR TRY
On a Try attempt from the 15-yard line, holder A2 brings out a large white towel and wipes his hands before calling
for the snap. After he wipes his hands, the holder (a) throws the towel away and behind where he is kneeling or (b)
drops the towel directly in front of him. The snap is made and the kick is good.
Ruling: (a) and (b) Try is good, KO A35. The holder is allowed to bring a towel out to the field that measures 6” by
8” and should be tucked into his waistband after use. The holder will be warned that, if on a subsequent FG or Try
attempt he doesn’t tuck the towel into his waistband, there will be a 5-yard penalty.
AND
A.R. 13.18 FG ATTEMPT-SNOW BEING CLEARED FROM FIELD
Fourth-and-10 on B30. Team A calls a timeout to prepare for a FG in snowy conditions. During the timeout, (a)
players begin clearing snow from the area the kick will be made, using only their hands and feet; or (b) team
personnel or grounds crew begin clearing snow from the same area.
Rulings:
(a) No foul. Players may help clear snow, using only their hands or feet (no towels, etc.)
(b) Fourth-and-25 on B45. Unsportsmanlike conduct. It is impermissible for the grounds crew or other team
personnel to clear away snow for a Try, field goal, punt, or kickoff. Officials should try to prevent this as soon as
they see someone coming out on the field, thus avoiding the need to call a penalty.
The issue stands that the referees, as noted in 13.18.b, should have advised the holder NOT to attempt to dry the field as soon as it was recognized that he was doing so, thusly avoiding the need to call the penalty.
Also the rule that says you can't bring foreign objects onto the field, under Rule 12, Section 3.
Based on the amount of water seen in that replay, I bet that jersey really did a great job.
Bears fans in here acting like taking a towel on to the field, drying a spot, and then throwing the towel away (leaving it on the field for the snap) shouldn't be a penalty and is a ridiculous rule. Next the Bears will be confused when they're told that, no, their sideline can't casually clear the snow away from the edge of the field with their feet to allow for an easier running lane.
I’m also a bears fan this is 100% on them and more specifically the special teams coach. The rules are outlined clearly and these guys have access to people who can clarify. They should’ve asked the refs before the game at the very least
Lol I’d keep the im a bears fan part to myself
That was the first thought I had. Lol
Huge Bears fan and 100% on them, but I’ve watched the NFL for 25 years and don’t think I’ve ever heard of that penalty.
It’s been on the rule books for almost 40 years now. I’m going to be 38 this year and this rule was put in place either when I was 1 or a few years before I was born. It just has never had to be enforced until today.
So this is a penalty, but kicking snow out of the way isn't?
The penalty is for leaving the towel on the field. It isn’t actually for trying to dry a patch
@@fsociety6983 would it have made a difference had they used a towel that dudes wear as part of their uniform? I’m genuinely curious about this as a former kicker and punter.
@@braedencooper1095 that’s different you dolt it’s on their uniform as supposed to leaving it on the fucking field, if you watched the game they legit just left the towel on the field, not like the towel on the uniforms that’s attached to them

Ofc this happens to the bears 😂
This is the equivalent to

there are a lot of dumb fans saying how its a horrible call. Its in the rulebook that you cant bring an external "object" to give you an advantage that the other team doesnt get. its a good call, just like how you cant bring out a chair for your star qb to sit down on in the huddle for some extra rest, or you cant bring a damn hair dryer to melt snow that might be in your way. Play on the field thats there, unless you want kickers to spend an extra minute or two every kick to get the best possible kicking conditions....
It makes so much sense, i dont get where people fuss about it lol

The Bears ended up punting instead. This penalty took them out of FG range.

But the overall quality of the field. I'm sure theres someway to properly drain water so it dosnt just sit and create a pool of puddles

@@JDBass36 Yeah, but that costs money, and some owners don't like that even though they're billionaires.
Gill said he was trying to flatten the surface for the kick instead of using his foot and didn’t realize the rule 😂
In golf, it's called _Improving the Lie._ A golfer was once penalized a stroke because he placed a towel on the ground to kneel on prior to taking a swing.
Interesting and right call
Didn’t know this was penalty
I remember when the Dolphins brought a snow blower to clear a section of the field with no penalty. So they are trying to tell me a towel is a PED performance enhancing device?
For those wondering, the rule here is Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1g: Using any object as a prop, or possessing any foreign or extraneous object(s) that are not part of the uniform on the field or the sideline during the game, other than the football after a scoring play or change of possession. If any foreign object(s) are deemed a safety hazard by the game officials, in addition to a yardage penalty, the player will be subject to ejection from the game, whether he uses the object or not.
So the holder could have taken his jersey off to wipe things down and it would be good as long as he put the jersey back on ;)
But he didn't get ejected?
@@AlexEich It wasn't deemed a safety hazard.
If that was actually half inch of water like the video showed, that towel wouldn't have made a difference anyway! 😂
What he should’ve done was use one of those white towels that they usually have tucked into their pants and used it while he was on the ground and then just quickly put it back tuck back into their pants so no could see it.

Chicago Bears football is different this season
never a dry moment
Bro the bears home games have been pretty odd because of the turf, vs the chiefs, the field was all holey and lots of divots and now it’s rain lol
Certified Bears Moment and I’m a Bears fan
So the Patriots can drive a snowblower onto the field to clear a path for the kicker but the Bears can't use a towel?
Logical application of Rule A.R. 13.18, which allows only players to "prep" the field for a kick, and only using their hands and feet. "No towels," is explicitly within the rule.
Damn, if you sneeze with theses refs you will get penalized lmao
When it rains it pours
I have a better question? How the fuck is a towel going to help dry off a soaked field Bears?
Doesn't this rule go back to when the Patriots had a guy with a plow clear snow for them to kick a field goal decades ago?
People forget. Bills attempted this too in 2018 but refs stopped it from happening.
No, the rule is about bringing towels onto the field.
@@fsociety6983 No it's not.
Yes
New England was digging snow out versus the Raiders they didn't get called for it
damn, you really have thoroughly read thar rule book to find.
After seeing the towel sitting there on the field, I think this was called because they left the towel on the field rather than the fact they used it to sop up water. I mean you can't run a play with an obstacle still on the field. Like what the fuck are you thinking? It's obviously legal to kick snow aside (manipulate the game surface in your advantage) and it's obviously legal to have towels on the field and use them on yourself (plenty of players wear towels in their belts). So I can't see why it would be illegal. Unless it's specifically because the towel was retrieved from the sideline (an exterior tool of sorts) rather than a tool kept on the player's person (like a belt towel). Or maybe it's specifically because they used a foreign object to manipulate the game surface rather than their own hands and feet.
no he actually wiped the spot of the ball earlier before throwing the towel away
Leaving a towel on the field is just a five yard penalty, I think.
No it wasn't for leaving a towel on the field. Smdh.
Players are prohibited from discarding on the playing field any loose towels or other materials used for wiping hands and the football.
This is the actual rule. You are allowed to dry the field or the ball, the penalty was literally for leaving the towel on the field.
@@taylorsova2594 No it wasn't.
He was giving the towel the business
If that's the case, I'm surprised there wasn't a penalty during the Week 15 game between the Bills and Dolphins when clearing off the snow to get the last second field goal
I mean it's a good rule. If left unchecked you'd end up having to deal with more creative drying techniques than just a towel. Play in what the conditions give you
The rule is for snow though...
I never knew this rule existed
Damn snow plow Field Goal.
