This allows the QB to take a shot at the endzone if it's there, but still run the clock out and get to halftime if it's not. The receiver in the area he threw the ball to was double covered by a CB trailing and a safety over the top. This was an intelligent play by the QB. So, I wouldn't call that a horrible throw considering he was trying to throw the ball out of bounds.
