Thank you for that comment about how people try and shoehorn a trans narrative onto characters like this! I read the Goodreads reviews for Backwards to Oregon and they're full of stuff like that when it makes no sense for the character.

I really liked this book as a fun historical fiction romp. Almost like a game of thrones type epic. But as a lesbian book? I am with you! I don't really remember much about Zhu and Ma other than they went horse riding and Zhu just treated Ma like a human being. While Ouyang navigating the Mongol court and his prince was so much more interesting. The second book in this duology was much worse, Ma is non-existent until the end and they did Ouyang so dirty.

How long must I wait for that “instant disappointment”?
    I’m beginning to think it’s false advertising…

Thanks for breaking up my work day with your review. Surprisingly haven’t heard of this book. Just finished Lavash at first sight. Small book, read in a day. 2 Armenian queer women. I imagined Arienne Mandi as 1 of the characters. You might like it.
Started The Ride of Her Life this morning. So far cute. You might like these books.
And picking up the sequel to All the girls I’ve been before -at the library later 😊Tess Sharpe’s books are very good.

I finished the second book, he who drowned the world, last month and I would say that the story definitely improved. I really like it and there is a lot more character development for all of the pov. But I completely agree with you it's not really a lesbian book, it's more a historical fiction that happens to have a lesbian mc. It's a hard book to get through but it's totally worth it.

I started this book and couldn’t finish it. I was excited for a piece of historical fiction in a part of history I know little about featuring a female protagonist and not written by a man. But I didn’t even make it half way, for the very reason you stated: I couldn’t connect with the protagonist at all. And I say this as a masc lesbian who has struggled with a lot of the gender questions I would imagine get somewhat explored in the book. She just seemed driven and empty and inaccessible.

Suspension of Disbelief. When a reader can’t believe, then any book becomes a slog. Thanks for a honest review.

You should definitely read Tryst Six Venom by Penelope Douglas. Curious to see what you think of it! 😊

I don't think I could ever read a book with the title She Who Became The Sun. Just the title sounds bombastic and turgid lol
