Dear friends
in a blink of an eye, the 15 days of CNY would soon come to an end. For this episode, on top of telling you the origins of yee sang I also included a couple of Chinese restaurants that I enjoyed my CNY dinners. If you find their food good and prices competitive, you still have a few days to patronize them. The next time I talk of CNY food , hopefully it be will a year from now, meanwhile happy CNY and see you in the next video.

Hi Elmo, just sharing what I have read about origins of Yee Sang years n years ago compiled in a,Chinese media research.My late grandma always insisted on having Yee Sang n in 1960 another place,sold this dish too on the 7th day of CNY.Yes it was Koon Kee Noodle stall along Cecil Street next to Hon Kee Porridge. Carp was used. Original story was the dish was borne in a village in Canton but due to food poisoning , the village head had an order to banned it. But some of these villagers came to Seremban and recreated it during a CNY. They found jobs n yearly had this dish the simple way. Yes Anthony Loke's grandpa had sold this dish at his restaurant in Jln Kong Sang, Seremban n was the first restaurant to commercialised it. My husband was their client then n he used to sing praises of it. Yam n coconut shreds n pickled papaya n kaet paeng are,all missing in today's modern version

History have muddled a lot of verifiable facts, however many dishes are very unique and highly probable created/ created in MALAYSIA .... even if China or Singapore claimed the credit

Yee Sang is not to be confused with Loh Sang ✌️
I remembered during the early 80s my chinese school mates from Baru Pahat have never even heard of Loh Sang 😀 but is a common CNY dish in Perak.

HBD elmo. since you are at this yee sang thingy, can demystify what fish is being used origanlly for YS. And yes i ate it in times when it was only chor 7 that YS was served. In fact in the 80s only chor 2 - 7 ys is served.
And the fish used is "wan yue" grass carp - now few places serve them except for Sek Yuen and sin kow yee. Those days mana ada salmon. Plus Carp is natural to our geogrpahy. I also note that in Sunde China the YS i ate there and in Bangkok is almost similar, grass carp as the highlight with condiment i.e. jelly fish, corriander, cucumber, carrots as the supporting actors. there is no tossing. just mixing indivually at your own makan plate or bowl.
