I chant this dharani (but not this version though, but its very similar I think its in Pali?) especially when it rains heavily, to prevent flooding, to have good weather, and to placate and pacify the elements and the spirits/nagas/beings who can affect the weather+environment. With all the climate change and disastrous weather and natural disasters, where my sister live has suddenly become flood-prone...

The most common difference is the one translated from Tibetan Canon: "NOTE On VERSION: This version is from the Translated version of Master Buddhapala during the Tang Dynasty because Sanskrit and devanagari is available. The Master Buddhapala version tends to be more focused on Sutra only translation. There is a slightly different version from the Tibetan Canon (Toh 597 Degé Kangyur, vol. 90, folios 243.b-248.a), however the title is Crown Victory of the Tathāgatas: The Uṣṇīṣavijayā Dhāraṇī with Its Ritual Manual so it likely includes some additional language (especially the praise) due to the intention that it be a "ritual manual." The versions in Devanagari and Bengali tend to follow the Tang Dynasty translation which was originally Sanskrit, which is chanted here." (I ran out of space typing citations because RUclips limits to 5000 characters which isn't enough for these longer Dharanis (I wanted to add English translation too but no room.) 🙏🙏🙏

For those of us with the full practice, yes it's missing the offerings, short mantra, etc. This is only the complete Sutra version of the Dharani (that is, the version you would see in the actual Sutra in Sanskrit.) Many people who have this practice have been transmitted the version from the Tibetan Canon (Toh 597 Degé Kangyur, vol. 90, folios 243.b-248.a or other versions), however the title in the Kangyur is "Crown Victory of the Tathāgatas: The Uṣṇīṣavijayā Dhāraṇī with Its Ritual Manual" so its really a practice sadhana with the Dharani, mantras, seed syllables. The short mantras and the opening Refuge are from Kangyur but not from the more widely translated Mahayana Sutra. We are chanting here the Sanskrit version from Devanagari which is the Mahayana Sutra version that was transmitted by Master Buddhapala (who came from Northern India to China and transmitted the Sutra and translated it in the Tang Dynasty (around 600 A.D.). For people who received this as a "practice" with the shorter mantras or seed. syllables and additional refuge or offerings, this will be from the Dege Kangyur and will be based on the full practice that developed from the Sutra, and came through precious lineages in Tibet. In other words, for practice, we use the longer version from the Kangyur, and also make offerings and chant the shorter mantra (which we have in a separate video: ruclips.net/video/X08aFcG5YrY/видео.html&t ) with the seed syllables. This video we're only reciting the Sutra version from the Master Buddhapala translation. 🙏🙏🙏
