    "You're My Best Friend" - The Once
    Re: Breeding vs. adopting
    Adoption is a wonderful option for new dog owners, and it is so very important. Not often discussed, however, is how responsible breeding is precisely what keeps breeds healthy and their lines present in the first place. If we didn't have responsible breeders, entire breeds would disappear, and the ones we do have would be a lot less healthy and structurally sound - and a lot less happy because of it. Breeders are the ones keeping lines from inbreeding by mating specific dogs from different lines (even across continents) and thinking of the health and wellness of the breed through careful selection and care, on top of many other things, including temperament guiding and testing to make sure you get the right dog for your family. It is very important to support these breeders, as most of them usually just break even for the work that they do.
    Of course, irresponsible breeding is to be condemned-but it is unbelievably frustrating to me to see proper breeding shoved into the same corner as puppy mills-particularly by people chastising me on the internet for not adopting and "supporting unethical breeders" which is simply untrue.
    Always make the choice that is best for you, your finances, your emotional health, and your family's well-being, keeping in mind that adopting is desperately needed, as is maintaining healthy, well bred lines.
    TL;DR: Recognizing the merits of proper breeding is as imperative as recognizing the need to adopt. Not to do so is factually incorrect, unfair, and ignorant.

    Samoyeds are the best! Great choice, Shawna. They're so friendly and love to cuddle. Once you have a Samoyed you don't go back: I had a Samoyed for almost 11years and currently have another one. I love these fluffy polar bears so much and Shiro is adorable. Have a great day :)

    • @TecknoAppreview
      @TecknoAppreview 7 лет назад +1

      They love narrow places (Taiga loves to stay between the chairs under the kitchen table) and keep their paws under their body or crossed (such a bourgeois pose xD).
      Just be careful with the ears for the first few months: if you touch them a lot they could not rise properly. And try to avoid giving him bread or other carbohydrates because Samoyeds have sensitive skin and he could develop some allergies.

      Mine is currently 6 months old, we got her when she was 2 and bit a lot. Now she doesn't do it really often. They do it the first 3 to 5 months of life because they're growing teeth, but if he bites your hands (even if softly) say a firm "no" and distance your hands from him. They're really smart and usually learn pretty fast.

      +Javiera Enero any advice on the insane biting attack phase of puppyhood?

    • @javijanuaryarts
      @javijanuaryarts 7 лет назад +8

      Give him raw bones and squeezey toys, I now the sound can drive you crazy but your fingers will be safe and use rope toys to play with him, never your hands, otherwise he will think it's ok to bite them. Samoyeds are a little bit stuborn, you should begin to train him into basic stuff like sitting, giving his paw, stand in two legs and lay down. My girl Amy is really clever, she can do a lot of things but it cost me a lot of patience and love. Just possitive reinforcement, in return you will have the most loyal dog in the universe, she can't live without me.

    • @shawna
      @shawna  7 лет назад +3

      +Javiera Enero ah yeah! I am doing all that already and he is the most lethal, horrid biter of legs, feet, hands, etc no matter what I do. It's super awful. Like being stabbed. And I've never allowed it from the beginning. Yet it continues on 💀

    • @javijanuaryarts
      @javijanuaryarts 7 лет назад +6

      +Nanalew Ouch, well it lasts only the first months so just try to hang on, he probably is changing teeth :/ even babies bite during that period. Good Luck and it's really nice to talk with you. I follow you since Sail ❤

    Oh my GOD, I was *not* prepared for the cuteness that started in 0:52. I had totally forgotten what was like to carry your new puppy home for the first time, the happiness, the “I can't believe this is really happening”, the excitement… This was such a lovely video and it brought all those memories back of the first time I saw my second kitten (she was so tiny, she could almost fit in my hands). Thank you for sharing this experience with us, and I hope everything works out fine with the two of you

    You puppy is absolutely adorable!... Her paws are huge!...
    I had one when I was still a teenager. Her name was Moushka...
    You will enjoy your life with your Samoyed. Never a dull moment with them!...
    They are very talkative with their owners...
    They are extremely sociable and they will go with just about anybody. So watch out for dogs' thieves...
    They love children, get along well with other dogs, and even cats when they are raised together...
    They are very attached to their family and don't do well if left alone for too long... They will bark, owl and destroy...
    They are smart little rascals. They can be stubborn and will obey only when they want to, they have a tendency to run away so be careful in walking her off leash...
    They love to dig so, forget about your nice backyard!...
    They bark a lot and owl!...
    They are escape artists so, make sure your backyard is properly secured...
    They don't do well in a hot, humid climate, they can overheat... It's best to keep them inside with air conditioner...
    Last thing, with a Samoyed, forget about wearing dark clothes!...

    We got Lon from a breeder after adopting a fatally sick cat (that was supposedly "totally healthy") from an organization. It cost a fortune and was emotionally traumatic for Tatsu and I. After seeing Tatsu's heart break like that, I knew he deserved a kitty that was going to be healthy, strong, and predictable in terms of disposition.
    If you're going to take care of a pet for life, sometimes adopting from a reputable breeder is the best investment you can make. Pet shop kittens and puppies aren't only susceptible to genetic deformities but also major behavioral problems and lack of social skill (which they usually learn from their mother and littermates in those valuable weeks after birth). These issues are, in part, why they get abandoned so easily.
    Don't let anyone shame you, if you're in this for life, you need to give your best shot. Adopting is amazing but it's not for everybody, and responsible breeders deserve our business, because at the end of the day, these doggies and kitties gotta come from somewhere. It's not like they just magically manifest in the wild.

    • @shawna
      @shawna  7 лет назад +10

      Absolutely agree. And people don't realize what a financial commitment you're getting yourself into with an adopted pet. Often they come with severe health issues you need to monitor and pay for. It's not as cut and dry as some people make it out to be.

    • @mikaeradesu
      @mikaeradesu 7 лет назад +4

      When we adopted the cat, the organization told us he had a cold, and he'd be fine in a few days, but he got so sick I couldn't even leave him alone in the house (his eyes were so mucusy that if I didn't wipe them constantly, they would get glued shut, and then because he couldn't see, he'd sit in the same spot all day, and go potty there too.)
      I cancelled work commitments for the days I thought he had a cold, so I could take care of him, and when I eventually took him to the hospital because he wasn't eating and was only vomiting, the hospital put him on an IV and kept him overnight at $100 a day, before eventually deciding that he wasn't going to get better...
      I would have done everything I could to make that cat better, I was naively making sacrifices thinking he had a cold, but in the end I wound up with no money, no cat, and unopened cat toys and cat treats that we bought, but he was never well-enough to have.
      And even after posting about the entire saga on Facebook, when we finally decided to get Lon, a friend of course ~HAD~ to say, "A bit disappointed you decided to go through a breeder, but congratulations I guess."

    • @kohlinoor
      @kohlinoor 6 лет назад +4

      To be fair, not all rescue organizations are like that. I'm very sorry you experienced what you did, as it sounds like a terrible ordeal! I understand why you made the decision you did after all that. However, there are many rescues that do great work in reducing the populations of feral animals, work that is very important, and we need people to rescue (as well as participate in TRN programs) or we'll continue to have large populations of domesticated animals living shorter, tougher lives outside and spreading/succumbing to various diseases and illnesses. So thoroughly vet your rescue before adopting from them, and also ask around to see if anyone's had any issues with them. If you want to go through a breeder, by all means do so, but if you have the option to rescue (and there are decent rescues around), you should really consider doing that first.

      Micaela's Japanese Life I adopted two dogs from the Humane Society. First one, she wouldn't eat and was diagnosed with pneumonia. We had just gotten her, it was unfair to us so we gave her back. Second one, everything seemed fine. Supposedly he had his first vaccines from them and we gave him the next ones. He developed distemper, which he had before we got him and it took a month for the symptoms to show. We paid for a treatment that had a slim chance of success, especially in a puppy. We had to put him down eventually. We were very attached already. After that, no more adopting for me. No thanks.

    Okay I get my dog next week, so i have been watching the videos, is it common for dogs to be put in these tiny crates and shipped like parcels in the US? Here we always get them from breeders and drive or get on the train to get them, I feel for the puppies because it's scary enough being taken away from their little and mum but also being put in a tiny cage with all the loud noises and everything on his own. Poor puppy

      It's very rare to find samoyeds in shelters! There are only 12 in the entire US, and are being snatched up quickly.
      I do agree that people should look in shelters if they just want a companion dog and don't care about the dog's background, etc. But that's not always the case for everyone! Sometimes shelter dogs have a little extra baggage, like resource guarding or anxiety, and not everyone is prepared to work with it. But that doesn't mean it's a bad dog! It's just not right for that certain individual.
      Don't impulse buy from anywhere, breeder OR shelter. Do your research and if you feel a shelter dog is right for your family then get one! But make sure that if it's a mix that you know what the temperament is of those breeds.
      Purebred dogs are born with certain innate characteristics and behaviors, so what may work for one family may not work for another.
      Do your research and be responsible no matter what!

      Shelters are also very difficult to adopt from many times they turn people away for the most ridiculous reasons. Maybe people would adopt more if shelters were not such hoarders and picky about where the pet is going. You pretty much have to be a rich elderly person with no life or job in order to adopt a pet.

      I tried adopting from shelters but they turned me down in favor of families with more money. Also, most of the dogs were aggressive, older pit mixes, and the shelters were very shady about giving information about the dogs' behavioral histories. PLUS my cousin was mauled randomly by a non-abused pitbull two years ago. So sorry but I'm not going to be shamed for carefully putting money and thought into purchasing my beautiful, trained samoyed puppy. Shelters are not for everyone.

      This could be true or not true depending on where you live. Try to find thousands and thousands of dogs in Montreal Canada. No, there's only 1-2 across the city's SPCA :)

    what's up with youtubers picking up their newly bred choice pups up at airports? It's cute and fluffy but there are so many fluffs that need homes locally. ADOPT, DON'T SHOP.

    • @mexicanine

      Because a lot of breeders ship puppies. And this isn't a common breed. Not all dogs are the same. Not all shelter dogs fit everyone's lifestyle.

    • @mexicanine
      @mexicanine 7 лет назад +35

      If you look at petfinder Samoyeds, in the ENTIRE country there are only 12 dogs. Not counting already-adopted dogs, or mixes because they have different temperaments. Not all dogs are local and not all are available.
      For example, the National Borzoi Rescue has a very long waiting list because there are no Borzois in shelters. All Borzoi come from good breeders, and if one happens to become homeless, breeders are quick to take them out of shelters and rehome them.
      So yeah, not all dogs are the same and saying "adopt don't shop" completely disregards the actual reason why dogs are abandoned, and that's because people impulse-buy from both bad breeders and shelters.

    What a heart-warming thing to watch, especially since I just got back from a convention and have all kinds of post-con blues ♥ I'm not a dog person, but Shiro is such a fluffy little goofball hehe! I watched your bathtub video too, and I'm sorry to hear that you've been experiencing post-puppy depression. I've never had a pet bigger than a guinea pig, but I can imagine that getting a new pet, especially a high maintenance once like a dog, is a bigger change than most give it credit. But seeing your face light up when you took Shiro home makes me feel it'll smooth out so much more in the coming weeks :] It sounds like you're already slipping into a balanced routine with videos and Shiro, and that'll only improve as he gets older - wishing you luck and happy thoughts!

    He's SO CUTE!! I can't wait for all the Shiro themed videos! Do make sure you get him a good groomer and learn how to brush and comb him properly so he doesn't get too hot or matted up from all his thick undercoat. A professional groomer will be more than happy to show you a few tips for his thick hair.
    I got teary eyed when he pawed at you a little bit after he came out of the carrier on the grass. The cuteness overwhelms!!

    I just read through your info and I'm so happy that you are a person that recognizes peoples assumptions and actually answer to them and doesn't shove it under the bus with "look its cute and fluffy". Also it looks like a very happy strong build doggy that will have an amazing life with you. I know I'm a year late but just wanted to give you a thumbs up!
