    I am interested to the history of the B-17 Flying Fortress since 2000 and doing research since 2017. It's still my hobby beside my full time job.     My father was a pilot of the 534 squadron for the mission described. Hi plane lost two engines and wound up making the English coast crash landing at an RAF base. On that mission less than half of the B 17’s survived. His plane was repaired and with new engines and armaments flew again less than one week later. The ground crews and mechanics were miracle workers. His crew went on to complete 26 missions and of the original 10 man crew 9 returned home. Very little talk about his combat flying for the rest of his life. Not until the Memphis Belle movie came out did I even hear about the Schweinfurt mission.

      thank you for sharing your father's story. I couldn't figure out the B-17 he flown on 17 August 1943. But I believe, I have a picture of his crew on my web site.

      @@B17FlyingFortress The plane was called “Our Mom”. Dad flew both missions to Schweinfurt and also Twice to Regensburg. Until experiencing combat myself I had no idea of how brave,patriotic and determined those men were. No wonder talk stopped once in civilian life. Another friend of his flew in “Tinker Toy”.
      Dad’s navigator, David McCarthy wrote a book about their crew. It’s called “Fear No More”.

      oh. yeah, that the picture I have on my web site, B-17 42-29832 / Our Mom aka Spirit Of A Nation. Your father is on this picture. But I think, you saw this picture before. Schweinfurt and Regensburg were rough mission, especially after 17 August 1943 and 14 October 1944. "Tinker Toy" has its own sad story.

    I was stationed in Schweinfurt at Conn Barracks 70-72. Our motor pool was next to the armor unit who was in former fighter hangers and the taxiways were our roads. I lived "on the economy" outside the base in Geldersheim and my landlord, son-in-law and his oldest son worked at SKF bearing works. Sachs bearing works also in town was the target of the B-17s. Sadly our 17s wer heavily chopped out by fighters and anti-aircraft guns and the landlord's wife (he was captured early in the war and sent as a POW to Canada) said they would go out in home guard wagons and round up the downed air crews that managed to bail out. I believe this was the longest raid and probably the most costly.

      Handshake was there 74-77 3/7 Cav Ledward(sp). I took many walks around Schweinfurt and have been to Conn many times.

    My father was a combat veteran of WW2 - flying a B-24 out of Italy from November 1944 until V-E Day. He would have saluted your work on this story.

    My father flew this mission and survived. He was with the 381st BG 532nd BS at Ridgewell. On the 17 August mission they were flying B17F 42-3177 "The Hellion," which was on loan from another squadron. The gunners had empty shell casings over their ankles, but the B17 came home unscathed. He was later shot down on 08 October 1943 over Bremen in "The Feather Merchant."

      lucky to return "unscathed" from 17 August mission. 08 October mission wasn't a milk run. Flak was terrible, I've read in reports. I have a picutre of B17F 42-3177 "The Hellion," in flight with other B-17s in formation, which was taken on or before 08 October. No exact date is given :(

      They were lucky. The 381st lost 9 ships that day, and 7 over Bremen. They flew the Polly Jo to England, but it was transfered to the 91st BG. Somewhere there is a photo of the 91st BG standing on a bomber in Africa after the Regensburg raid. That's the Polly Jo. Then they used Ole Flak Sack. But Lt. Leo Jarvis did an accidental wheels up landing so it was out for a few missions after that. The Colonel made Leo sit in the front of the briefing room for the next mission wearing a dunce cap. Leo was shot down over Schweinfurt. They flew Old Coffins a couple times. The wives hated that. Then The Hellion. Then Feather Merchant. Dad piloted Tinker Toy once, but had a runaway engine on takeoff and had to return. It was the very next mission Tinker Toy's pilot was decapitated. @@B17FlyingFortress

      Thank you for the feedback :) The AI voice are pretty good in my opinion. If I have a lot of money, I would prefer human voice actors. Maybe one day in the future :)

    Great videos. I grew up in the 1970s just down the road from Ridgewell airbase where he was stationed. The base was long since decommissioned at that time but it has a very active preservation society with a museum near the old main gate. A couple of the people involved in this (Paul Bingley & Mike Peters) have written a book called 'Bomb Group' all about the 381st based at Ridgewell. If this is your area of interest I would absolutely recommend getting hold of a copy - it is full of incredible information about the missions and the men and is beautifully written.

      Back in 1990 I worked with an elderly man who had been evacuated from Dover to somewhere close to Ridgewell and he told me much about the comings and goings of the 381st, he remembered being particularly close friends with the crew of 'Tinker Toy' and how upsetting it was when they eventually failed to return, he also remembers a P51 crashing in the area and obviously being a teenage boy cycling over to the site and being the first there, he remembered the fragments of the pilots body.
      Quite terrible.
      He also remembered playing on the only hill for miles around because it was under the flight path of V1 bombs launched at London by HE111 over the North Sea and because they were launched at low level they skimmed just over the crest of the hill and one day he was up there when one went past closely pursued by a Hawker Tempest.
      I was working in Harwich for a while last year and on the drive home took the opportunity to visit Ridgewell but sadly the museum was closed, I had a cup of tea on the wooden benches there and thought of all the young blokes who flew from there and I thought of my mate Wally who has long since passed away.

      @@antonrudenham3259 Tinker Toy had its own sad story. Thank you for sharing the story. Saw few pictures of Ridgewell in the archives. A Hugh airbase with a lot of buildings. Not much left today, I think.

    I wonder as of today how many of these extremely brave souls are still alive. They would all have to be in there 90s.

      My dad was the bombardier on Chug-a-lug Lulu, which was shot down over Belgium on Aug 17, 1943 (he didn't escape - was a POW till the war's end). He was (almost)26 that year and would have been 107 this year.

    There's a good book about this raid called The Bomber Mafia. Check it out, you'll learn how one group of bombers got shafted by another group, leading to even more losses than were expected.

      @@B17FlyingFortress It's kind of weird too, like it's a little pocket book. But it has stuff on Norden bomb site, napalm, the first guy that was in charge of using B29's to bomb Japan and then when LeMay took over. It gives a pretty good bio on these people too. Sadly, the first guy in charge of the B29's that were bombing Japan had no clue about the jet stream and did everything that was asked of him but the results sucked. No matter your best intentions, when you try dropping bombs from thirty thousand feet and your bombs hit that jet stream cruising 100mph on the way down, they are bound to be off course...
