  • The double-decker buses of Mumbai, introduced in 1937, have become an iconic part of the city's history. The inspiration for these buses came from London's famous red double-deckers. Initially, these buses were operated by the Bombay Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), which sought to accommodate the growing population and the increasing demand for public transportation.
These buses quickly became popular due to their high capacity, which allowed them to carry more passengers than the single-decker buses. Over the years, they became a symbol of Mumbai, often featured in films, postcards, and other representations of the city.
The buses were particularly prominent on routes passing through key areas such as Marine Drive, Colaba, and CST (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus). The upper deck, with its panoramic view, was a favorite among passengers, especially tourists and children.
However, the fleet of double-decker buses has gradually dwindled due to various challenges, including maintenance costs, the need for modern infrastructure, and the difficulty of maneuvering these large vehicles through the increasingly congested streets of Mumbai. As of recent years, their numbers have decreased significantly, and BEST has been phasing them out in favor of more modern and efficient buses.
Despite this, the double-decker bus remains a beloved part of Mumbai's heritage, evoking nostalgia for many of the city's residents and visitors. Efforts have been made to preserve a few of these buses as heritage vehicles, and there have been occasional reintroductions of double-decker buses on select routes as part of tourism initiatives.
