This is a whole new soundtrack to me that I'd never heard before. It actually makes me want to play it. Darksiders has always been an interesting game to me due to the whole War, Death, Greek, Roman mythology thing. Astarte is no different: Astarte is the Greek form of the name Ashtart, who, along with Asherah and Anath, was one of the three great goddesses of the Canaanite pantheon. Astarte is well known as a goddess of sexual love and fertility but also has associations with war. (thanks google) - Really interesting to hear her sonically personified. Composer: Gareth Coker ‪@garethcokermusic‬

For context: This music plays when the two horseman, arrive in the garden of Eden, a place that was destroyed because of the war between the nephilims and their on kind, the Horseman, who slaughtered their peers for the sake of the balance of the universe. Astarte was the guardian angel of Eden, and she feeling such remorse that flooded these lands was eventually tempted by Lucifer himself to betray the angels. So much so that in the fight she uses necromantic techniques to revive the nephilims to kill War and strife.
That's the theme of the music, betrayal, like the horseman who betrayed their own kind for the greater good, or as Astarte who betrayed her purpose by self-interest

Astarte never felt remorse for the war with the nephilm. Non of the angels did. Astarte was left alone on eden to rot. Abaddon said he thought of her like a daughter in genesis but knowing him from the first game was selfish in his goals. Astarte was forgotton. She resented being left alone ti guard a dying eden. Hits even worse in the first game where the angel of death azrael safe guarded eden said itll be lost after war was done with the trees vision. Lucifer took advantage of astartes insecurities and loneless.

I have been a Darksiders fan since the beginning back in 2010, and it feels right finally that Darksiders is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
    Also for context
Astarte was originally a member of the Faneguard and lieutenant to Abaddon who fought with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse against the Nephilim at Eden.
Abaddon implied he held her in high regard and was his lover at some point. However, being made to guard the tomb of a realm slowly drove the once noble warrior mad, allowing the seeds of Corruption to take hold, which in turn led to her allying herself with Lucifer to be free from the dead realm of Eden.
Their deal was freedom from her duties and the power to raise a army from Eden's corpses in exchange for access to Eden and her soul upon her death.

    Some interesting stuff on Darksiders Genesis, the main bosses are Mammon, Belial, Astarte, Dagon and Moloch. Aside from Belial, most of these bosses are either;
    - symbolic terms (Mammon comes from an expression relating to greed-- "You cannot serve God and the Mammon at once) ;
    -demonized pre-Abrahamic deities
(Astarte was demonized later on in time into Astaroth, from a protecting warrior goddess into a Lord of Hell in the Ars Goetia,
*EDITED NOTE: YOU ACTUALLY ADDRESSED THIS IN THE DESCRIPTION*
    and Dagon was some... Canaanite, i think god associated with rivers, whom H.P. Lovecraft later interpreted as a fish god) ;
-or Both (Moloch may have existed as a worshipped god, but Biblical and Abrahamic scriptures described his worship as a minotaur creature-like statue from the waist up, with a big flame in the belly to which children were sacrificed).
The outlier here is Belial, who first appeared in a DLC for Darksiders 2. In accordance with the timeline, he is the only main boss not actually killed-- just severely punished and stripped of his rank.
Ironically, for being considered a brutish low-life, he has two really quality boss fights in the entire series.
In Abrahamic views, I believe he's a fallen angel.
Knowing this, let's direct our attention to Astarte in Darksiders Genesis. In the series mythos, the Nephilim, a cursed union of Angel and Demon which the Four Horsemen were part of, tried to conquer Eden as a realm all their own, after already having conquered and slain countless worlds in creation.
The Horsemen grew weary of the slaughter, and forged a pact with the Charred Council, an ancient union set up to preserve the very balance of the universe. They would be the Council's enforcers in exchange for formidable power.
Thus the Four Horsemen were born, and their first act was to annihiliate their own species.
To this day, the corpses of the Nephilim still litter Eden, said to have been sealed away forever from anyone-- one of the greatest gifts of the Creator, now empty of both its giftees and defilers.
But in secret, a number of angels stood guard over Eden, with archangel Abaddon chief among them. The angel Astarte specifically was to be the foremost guardian, to safeguard Eden and its secrets... but gradually she grew mad in her isolation, believing her sacred duty which she took upon herself, to be abandonment and neglect from basically everything else in creation.
As the Phantom General in 1 said to War, "All of creation cares not whether you live or die."
Thus she sought vengeance... and the Morning Star, Lucifer, was the first to answer her pleas in her centuries of isolation.
That is how the protector and guardianess of one of the greatest gifts of Divinity, turned demon.
I've seen practically *nobody* catch up on this, but for the setting and timeline -the early days of man- to make SUCH poetic meta use of these names, is an absolute stroke of genius befitting of the Darksiders' universe take on Christianity and its mythos, alongside other mythological inspirations and influences.

Oh, another comment to build upon my last one:
Some of the instruments and sound in this piece makes me think of the Morin Khuur, the Mongolian horse-headed violin. This to me signifies the ties to the Nephilim as nigh unmatchedly brutal and effective conquering, nomadic people.
But in this, it is also referring the Horsemen: specifically in the sound of betrayal that you mention, and the fact that the Mongolian hordes are very known for their horse riding.
Mix this with the angelic horns and the choir, to symbolize Astarte's divine origin and how Heaven and Hell existed on the young, pre-Abrahamically established earth, and I personally get this very unique feeling of a time before the grand three religions of our world took foot. I have never felt anything completely like it before or since.
Thus the title Genesis resounds especially strongly for me.
2 has a beautiful and legendary soundtrack as well, but delves more into other worlds (Creation, Death, and and outpost of Heaven alongside a ruling but decaying throne of Hell) with their own emotions, such as the decay of the world of the Makers, the haunting, nostalgic and bittersweet eternity in the Kingdom of the Dead, the corrupted beauty of Lostlight, and heavy and skin-crawling ambience that sweeps over into aggression in the Black Stone.
Earth *does* appear, but after humanity's end instead of her early days on Earth.
In any case, would absolutely love to see you react to more music from the Darksiders series.

@@MarcoMeatball You're very welcome! THank you for taking the time to read the comments through, i'm glad it has caught your interest :)
Fair warning that between entries, the Darksiders series can be divisive as the Tower of Babel. They're generally like Legend of Zelda by way of dungeons, puzzles, items and abilities that can be used for puzzles, combat or both, with a hack-and-slash style combat system.
Here's some quick descriptions to get you an idea of each of them.
The first two games are most similar to each other, though 1 has a slow start and some padding that doesn't do it favours. Still a good time, though! Many unlockable and upgradable moves like in DMC, with a primary and secondary weapons, as well as hidden secrets such as relics you can sell or Enhancements you can equip on your primary or secondary weapons.
2 went a more RPG-ish direction with loot and drops, and *really* built upon the presence of dungeons and puzzles and secrets. It's quite long and the last two realms aren't as big as the first, and the kingdom of the dead has some bad padding. Nevertheless, 2 often shows up as one of people's favourites. Death as a character and Jesper Kyd's music went a long way in that.
3 leaned a more into Soulslike elements with less dungeons and puzzles. A later update added an option to switch the combat style to something more in line with the first two and a DLC (Keepers of the Void, i believe) that acts more like a dungeon with puzzles, alongside some specific bosses and a side story of its own.
Story has the presence of the Seven Sins, and Lust especially steals the show in how fantastically it has been depicted.
Genesis puts the perspective in an isometric view and allows you to play as either War or Strife, or as one each if you have a friend. It's more in line with the first two games, bringing back specific weapon enhancements, tools from 1 and 2, and more puzzles throughout.
The structure is changed from connected/open world with dungeons to replayable levels, some of which dedicated to the big boss fight.
It's also the game to best showcase sibling dynamics.
And that's about it for now. Thank you again for reacting to this piece and taking the time to read through and reply to the comments, and I would love to see you react to the future tracks of this series! :)
And on the topic of Biblically/mythologically themed hack-and-slash titles, you might find interest in the OST of Dante's Inferno as well.

Astarte's theme truly is the best one from this particular game. Although, I also really love Bastion's Fall, which comes right after this one and you should listen to it, off screen, later. It's a very emotioal piece and it was even more effective for me during gameplay, because of the story timing.
Gareth Coker, who also did Ori's soundtrack (which is amazing btw), is great and he did justice to this game's ost.
That being said, I would implore you to absolutely check out Darksiders II soundtrack by Jesper Kyd, at least on your free time, if not on the channel. Sure I'm biased becaus this franchise is literally my all time favorite and Darksiders II is also my personal #1 game to this day, but I honestly haven't heard a more fitting, atmospheric and all around a masterful soundtrack in any other game, till Genshin came out.

Darksiders has been on a ride.
    DS1 is Zelda.
DS2 is like DMC with Diablo-esque looting.
    DS3 is Souls-like.
    DSG is full on Diablo.
But the art and music have always been top tier.

Would you ever do more Darksiders music? The series has a lot of good music, but one of my favorites not only in Darksiders, but for games as a whole, was one of the tracks from Darksiders 2. I believe the proper name is The Maker's Guardian.
I don't want to give anything extra away about it in case you analyze it yourself, but I really like it and I think it would be interesting to see what you think about it.

I would love to see you react to "Baile de Violetas" from the Blasphemous OST, it's a great game with a great soundtrack!
    Great video as always Marco!

Seconded! Blasphemous has fantastic music, lot of it inspired by or based on (South) Spanish types of music.
When it comes to brutal religious themes and music, i'd also recommend Dante's Inferno. It's less elegant compared to Blasphemous, but the music does *SO* much to set the stage there.
