    Update
-(Jan 2020) - still on Express, works well on my mac laptop (stays connected), on iphone and android, will have to reconnect
    - (8/11): I'll be updating my website about which servers + FREE vpns work best: www.phoebespicks.com/home/which-vpn-works-in-china-august-2019
    - (7/10): Highly suggest downloading a couple free VPNs as backup. You can never be too prepared!
    - (6/12): Everything back to normal
    - (6/8): Express working on iOS at the moment but a bit shaky on androids in SZ

I just used speedtest.telstra.com/ and it said
      47.3 Mbps download speed
      2.4 Mbps upload speed
      348 ms ping speed
      hope that helps!

Now cellular data are become much affordable in Hong Kong , want to have a pleasant experience without the Great firewall , you can go to Hong Kong apply a max out plan like $40-50 per month , you can have like 30gb share data can be use in China. It is pretty enough for daily use [w/o watching videos] , haha 😆 Although, I guess the service provider may share data with China gov trace for sensitive content, but i think if you surf normally, it should be fine 🙃

Cost may be a factor in choosing a particular VPN service provider but the most important factor is whether it works as promised. Despite what I have been reading online I have never been able to get inside China from outside with NordVPN. Yes, I did enable obfuscated servers and I did choose obfuscated servers and I am on Windows 7.

I usually connect manually with OpenVPN if I use NordVPN, and it turned out that it was more stable and faster than Express. But if one is bad at computer/network stuff, I guess ExpressVPN is better in terms of convenience.

I am here because I want a more reliable way to watch Netflix in China. I have Express VPN but Netflix keeps determining the few severs available to people in China are proxy servers and then disallows you to watch Netflix... Only Japan works for Netflix purposes now out of the four servers available to China customers...which means a lot of content you would want from American Netflix is not available.

@@pbjofficial Does it really work? I was in Shenzhen 2 weeks ago for only a day and tried Express VPN on the 7 day free trial. I was using it with a China Mobile SIM card under my wife's name. (Not sure if the telco makes a difference or not but I have a feeling that if I enable roaming on my HK SIM card, I have less issues connecting to VPNs.) When I tried Express VPN, it connected one in 10 times. And when it did connect, the connection was so slow, I had to disconnect and try again. I gave up and switched to Nord VPN which I had previously been subscribed to. That day Nord VPN worked better but take that "better" with a grain of salt because I still had to wait a couple (or few?) minutes to connect and the connection did have stability issues.
Also, a couple months back, I was in Hunan for a week, and used Nord VPN & SurfShark which I am also subscribed to. Both seemed ok on my phone but on my PC, i had many problems getting it to work. I had to use workarounds with an OpenVPN client in order to connect. And even then it was not so stable. For the Hunan trip, SurfShark seems to connect more reliably and seemed more stable. You may be asking why I didn't use SurfShark the last time I was in Shenzhen too. In HK, some services I need access to are banned from here too, so I am permanently on VPN on my desktop at home as well as my laptop when I am mobile, and the one I prefer is NordVPN.
It would be great to have an update if you ever have any new updates on this topic. I am considering the idea of moving to China in the coming months assuming I can find a solution for VPN.

Express worked TERRIBLE this year and that's the only issue I want to change it to Nord permanently. For the price they charge the quality is not that good.

NORD VPN at the moment: DO NOT PAY FOR THIS SHIT
Connecting from a country with internet restrictions
Unfortunately, all of our current servers were recently blocked in China due to the approaching holiday - the National day of PR China. Rest assured, we will launch new servers within a few upcoming days.
If you are trying to connect with iOS, please contact our customer support for the detailed instructions

  • @bloedekuh
    @bloedekuh 5 лет назад +1

Both are terrible. But at least NorpVPN is cheap. Forget about Express, I'm using it right now. HK5, youtube 240p and still lags. ExpressVPN customer service is friendly but they don't solve any sh**. They'll ask you to try all recommended servers and let the connection finish or terminate by itself. That would take about 1 hour and if it still doesn't work, they'll ask you to resinstall. And if still nothing works, they'll say "please understand blah blah China blah blah blah" and that's it. If you use IOs, just try those free VPN apps on iOS, some of them work in China, and apple app store isn't blocked in China. If you use Android phones, then check those free app and look for comments, some users do tell you whether it works in China. Google play store IS blocked in China.
