So what do you bait a swarm trap with, and where do you place them?

    With the weather warming up rapidly here in Southeast Louisiana, today it reached 82 degrees, and trees are flowering everywhere you look, my focus temporarily turns from building equipment to catching swarms. Even though I still have 80 screened bottom boards to build, I'm going swarm trap setting. I don't know how most of you feel about catching swarms in a trap, but for me, it's one of the most exciting aspects of keeping bees, and it is the closet thing there is to really FREE BEES.
    As sad as the experience of losing about 20 hives over winter was, I plan on using those hives as my swarm traps. Basically, turning a bad into a good. They have all the necessary smells associated to attract a new swarm, and there is drawn out comb ready for use.Because the first swarms of the year will almost always contain the old queen, these swarms have the capability of exploding very quickly as there is no down time for the queen to get mated and start laying. By having drawn comb in the trap, our old queen can start laying within a few days, and within 3 weeks you will see orientation flights from your new swarm. I'd like to see that happen with a secondary swarm, you'd be lucky if you saw orientation flights 40 days after catching one of those. And as you all know, it's all about timing with bees. If there are enough bees in the hive when the nectar flow is on, you are going to have a wonderful honey crop. Have I ever mentioned that I really love honey.
    Once again, Wreck it Ralph donates his time and talents in helping me clean our old dead outs, build the stands that will hold our swarm traps, and rides shotgun with me to set 11 traps. What an honor and privilege to have such a good friend. So follow along as Ralph and I prepare and then set Abbee Honey's swarm traps. God's peace to all.
    Mr. Ed

    Hi Guys! I love your idea of using dead-out brood boxes for swarm traps! I also like the air nozzle you're using to blow off the frames, any chance you can provide a link to that fixture? Wishing you a great honeybee keeping season and thank you so much for sharing your excellent methods! Thumbs UP A+++

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад +5

      We had about a 35% lose over the winter, and the comb in the boxes was really nice, so, I converted my loses into gains by making them into swarm traps. To date, I think I have caught over 15 swarms in those traps. In my book, that's a really good use for a dead out hive. I'll be posting an accurate count of the swarms I caught from our dead outs on the video I post next Friday. The nozzle I was using was one that came from Home Depot, it's just a regular air nozzle, nothing special. I have watched many of your bee videos and you do a very good job with them, keep it up. I hope to hear from you again. God's peace brother.

      Hello to you Cheryl, and yes, the beeard is gone.....just like our winter. I always feel sorry for folks who live north of Louisiana because of the cold they have to endure while us folks in the south are turning on our air conditioners. The top bar is coming up to the abbey as soon as the stand that is being constructed is finished, and when it is, I will bring the hive to the abbey and make a video on it. More than likely I will be splitting it at the time, we shall see. I am happy to hear you like the blessing over our traps, it really is the secret to successfully catching swarms. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    I guess I can't keep watching Bee videos without wanting to give it a shot. But I'm on disability and cant afford to get into it right out.
    Bees are expensive so I will do it one step at a time. Found some videos on how to make Bee Traps out of 5 gallon buckets. I will put out 10 and see what happens.
    If I catch a swarm or 2, I have time to build some nukes or hives and rehouse them, since I have a complete wood shop, I can make anything.
    For now, I am planting my yard in clover, in the fall, i will go to the woods and dig up Goldenrod to plant the edges of my yard. Hopefully by spring I will have some bees for my yard. If not, clover is a great food for salads and goldenrod makes a good tea.
    Remember the Boston Tea Party? Well there for a while nobody had any tea, so they made tea out of goldenrod and called it "Freedom Tea". If you google Goldenrod Tea, you'll find it has a lot of good stuff in it. So even if I fail to catch a swarm, I will have some great food/ground cover to feed wild bees and myself. How us that a losing situation?

    Hi Mr. ED Love your videos I get a kick out of your interactions with Mr 628 Dirt Rooster. I would like to ask you a question if you have the time. I bought some what was labeled 100% lemon grass oil but it just does not smell like very good "real lemon grass oil". So do you have a producer of lemon grass oil that works for you? Please keep the videos coming. From the North Dakota frozen bee keeper.

      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Jim from the frozen North, Dakota that is. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment on the videos, I do appreciate all the effort it takes. To answer your question, the type of Lemon Grass oil I use is called Cymbopogon flexuosus. I buy it at the local health food store and it has always worked well for me over the years. To date, I have caught over 18 swarms in our traps, and it is still very early in the swarm season. I wish you all the success in your trapping also. Please let me know how you make out. That is so cool that you can bee line. I have tried it a few times but lose the bees after 2 seconds. As far as your dilemma is concerned, my suggestion would be to add some frames to the dash, video the swarm as it moves in and takes up residence, and after the video goes viral, but 2 cars with the profits. God's peace brother.

    I really appreciate your obvious belief in God. Too many beekeepers don't believe in a creator. I remember 10 years ago my Muslim beekeeper friend and I would elbow each other and giggle at meetings where the speaker would attribute bee characteristics to evolution.

    I am wanting to get into bee keeping, watching you and rosters videos. I am taking that having the old comb is key making these traps. What if you don’t have the old comb, other than the lemon grass oil, is there anything else that you would suggest? Thanks and God Bless.

      Thank you for your blessing David, I greatly appreciate it. A few suggestions, first, find a bee club in your area and join it. You will meet lots of folks that have a serious bee infatuation. You may even meet someone who will mentor you, and be able to secure some old brood comb for you to bait a trap or two. The second suggestion, get to bee friends with patience. It is always very difficult when starting out keeping bees, but if you stick with it, you will gain knowledge and experience. I wish you all the best on your bee keeping journey. I hope you will keep me posted. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    Hello there Mr Ed and Ralph! I have to ask - WHERE is the top bar box at this precise moment? Its a month since you said you were going to move it within the week. And perhaps others can correct me if I am wrong - but I think I have heard that promise several times last year too? I think you need a secretary to keep your schedule you are CLEARLY too busy!! *wink wink* Video was great though, you are a master of that no question! And thanks for the prayer its nice of you to share your super power in swarm captures!

It's all good and I'm having a blast. The prayer over the swarm traps is the real key to success. God's peace Julie.

    Since the Greater Wax Moth is attracted to drawn comb, how do you keep them out of your swarm traps?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад +1

      As long as the weather stays cool, the wax moth is not very active. My hope is that bees move in before the moths. At any rate, by the middle of March, I will trade out the brood frames with wax covered foundation to catch swarms. It's a wait and see kind of thing. I'll post updates to show what's going on. @Jeff Horchoff Bees I've been a sub for quite sometime now and get a lot useful information from your channel. Scout bees are like that, and because there are many scouts from a swarm, even though your trap may have been a good candidate for the new hive, there may have been another one that was selected. Still, don't lose hope, like I said, there are many scout bees out there looking. Best wishes for your successes. God's peace Tina.

    I have a question. We have 4 swarm traps on our acre and my son has 4 swarm traps in various parts of town about 15 miles from us. Anyway his trap in his back yard has had some activity the past couple days , just a lot of coming and going, fighting and "kissing".. There has been the same activity at a couple of our traps. Tree pollen has been very high for about 4 days in a row now.
    Tonight my son checked after dark and there were a few bees inside. He read that scouts will spend the night.. Is this true? We went out and found a couple of bees in a couple of our swarm traps as well and one tagged my husband when he peeked inside. Ours are being robbed out by ants tho too.
    Also, in my son's trap he noticed the bees dragging out the q tip he put in with lemongrass oil... so they are cleaning! Is that a good sign that he will catch a swarm??

      You have to move slow when handling bees. A queen-less hive is more aggressive. mites and beetles or ants in the hive will agitate the bees.
      You get to know the signs that your bees give you when working them, for example....if they bump into you that means back off for a minute and do nothing before you continue or else you may get stung or attacked by more bees.
      Some smells will make them more aggressive.
      If you use smoke the bees will calm down since they can not communicate a threat very well with each other, also smoke makes the bees consume more honey and that will calm them down.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад

      The wax moths will move into the trap if you leave the old brood comb to long. As long as there is cool weather, there should be no problems with wax moths. Generally, by the time that happens, I've already taken down my traps, and if I still have some out, there is no brood comb in the trap, I replace them with drawn out honey comb, wax moths won't lay in honey comb, only comb that had larva in it. At least that is my experience of it. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

      I agree. Early in the year it is not so much of a problem but if he leaves those up anytime, the wax moths will make a nasty mess out of them.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад

      That is very true, but we still have a bit of cool weather, and as long that's around, the wax moth is not very active. I would not do this after March. Very good point. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

      By the end of March, I won't have the old brood comb in the traps. Hopefully by then, bees will be in them. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

      Jeff, if you need to replace a queen for any reason, (failing, temperament, not productive), take the old queen and place her in a glass container with an ounce of plain rubbing alcohol. Use something to crush the body into pieces let it set for a couple of weeks and this allows the alcohol to extract the pheromones of the queen. This can then be used in addition to the lemon grass oil as an attractant for the later season splits. Apply it the same was as the lemon grass oil. It will not attract moths or beetles but is effective as a swarm lure.

    Just a bit of advice, I couldn't tell in this video but in most of your videos they look like jello, like the image is moving back and forth.. That happens when you let RUclips "stabilize" your video. NEVER let RUclips do anything to your video all they will do is mess it up. I learned that the hard way on my other channel.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад

      Thank you for your advice. I stopped using the stabilization effect offered by RUclips more than a year ago, it was terrible. The only thing I can think of that makes the image distort is when I am holding the camera in my hand and not on the tri pod. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    Что можете сказать о "Flow Hive" ? (Мне кажется - неэффективный улей. Будет забиваться трутнями, личинками и воском)

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 лет назад +1

      Я не поклонник Flow Hive, но для некоторых людей это может быть их ответ на сохранение пчел. Как и у вас, у меня много сомнений относительно жизнеспособности системы, когда речь заходит о готовности меда, это все же нектар, в отношении других вторжений насекомых и даже долговечность пластиковых контейнеров в суровых погодных условиях как ваши проблемы. Как я уже сказал, я не поклонник этого, но некоторые люди подумают, что это ответ на их молитвы. Божий брат мира.

    How could i catch swarm or bee if i don't have frames with comb?. Only empty box with empty frames and lemongrass oil.😇 somebody could help me??? 😇😂🐝🐝🐝🍯😍✌

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 лет назад

      It is not imperative that you have "old" comb in order to catch a swarm, it certainly helps, but so log as the trap is placed in a location that bees are in, and you add lemongrass oil in the trap, there is a very good likelihood a swarm will move in. I wish you all the best of luck......because a lot of it is just that, let me know how it goes for you. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

      my empty trap(no comb) with lemongrass oil i place it near in forest, i don't know f this work.😂😇, thank you MR. ED 😇

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 лет назад

      @@alifishing2493 There is always the possibility of bees moving into a trap regardless of where it's placed. However, to increase the likelihood of bees moving in, I have found that frames with old brood comb in them, along with using old equipment, the smell of bees already present, and lemongrass have always produced the best results. Also, knowing that bees are in the increase your odds of catching a swarm. One more thing I attribute to my success of catching swarms, I always say a prayer when I set my traps. I hope this helps you, and I'd like to know how you make out. Thanks for watching, and I wish you the best of luck. God's peace.

    YAAY RALPH and yes, Mr. Fuzzy, we know this was before the Rooster roasting. Now you're Mr. Babyface once again. And you are cornering the swarm market. Poor Rooster. Has to come back from a foreign land to get scorched. GBWYall from US goofy hillbillies!

      Babyface needs swarms to make the Rooster look worse than a half eaten, like that would ever happen around the Dirt man, moldy, bacon samich that's been out in the sun for 2 days. Stay tuned as Mr. Ed puts another whooping on the Rooster and makes him cry like my 3 year old niece. God's peace brother.
