* RUclips forced me to mute the music from HAM (which is why the video was blocked for a bit) * You may notice some aggressive edits in this video. I'm trying to get it to clear checks and not get blocked (checks haven't finished yet, so this might go poof soon). Either way, I had to cut some sound to have a chance. Hopefully it isn't too annoying/distracting.
No worries bro. Cant wait for Life of Pablo! Keep it up 💯
@@joshtilahun6679 fr
It’s straight. We know what’s in between. U go back over the lyrics anyway 💯
May just have to dedicate your Jay-Z content to Patreon.
All good. HAM was always a weird one. It was a single but then wasn't on the album initially. Maybe something with licensing a sample or something? Because it took a while to show up online with the album iirc. And the deluxe edition wasn't out right away, I think. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.
13:12 I WAS DYING TO SEE THIS TO HAPPEN LMAO, DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!
I legit laughed out loud
My heart stopped for a second there lmao
I had the Jay-Z face watching kanye walk up to beck. "no bob.. dont"
Top 3 album for me

In a concert, Kanye West and Jay Z played Niggas in Paris 11 times in a row
performed in Paris, naturally
I watched it this morning (well, half of it). Wildly appropriate for the time and place it happened
Not to mention it was an encore so they played an extra 40 or something minutes after the show was over
@@bobthepoppop it was so they could get shots for the music video
I watched that xD
N in Paris too iconic man, all them basketball warmup before games in highschool 😂
That’s so true same with forever by drake lmao and stronger by Kanye
And NCITW

Individuals in Paris is such a hype song they actually played it 11 times back to back when they performed it in Paris and the crowd went insane for it. I'm also pretty sure that footage of that show is what they used for the music video for the song
I think they filmed the music video here in Detroit.
@@zachnahshel Staples Center in LA, thought it was in Paris going off of the footage.
That's kind of a shame.
*Niggas in Paris

Fun fact about Gotta Have It: Kanye and Jay-Z freestyled the entire song together in one take. They were in the booth just rapping, nothing written or planned. First and only take, that's the song we got. Incredible
Makes sense. They were already in the zone from the other joints they’d made

The Blueprint by Jay-Z is phenomenal, album that really set Kanye off too from a production standpoint.
Blueprint is so much better if you’re looking for real jay z
Fun Fact: the synth sounding thing on Gotta Have It is actually Kid Cudi humming

If you love No ID beats, you should try 444 by Jay-Z. No ID hits master level production on that album. Also Jay's most personal album.
I hope to get into more Jay-Z albums someday. Blueprint, Black Album and 444 all get mentioned a lot
@@bobthepoppop I’m definitely there for all of it

lol it really is
New Day whipped my ass the rest of the summer this album came out. Mostly because I was 24 partying hard single but also wanting to make a family foundation….it’s almost like the album is a victory lap with a reality check that you can always do better….the grass is always greener I feel…I am now 34 missing my party days but love being a dad of a nine year old daughter……perhaps we always want the best of life without the struggles but wouldn’t love what life has to offer without those same struggles? No wonder Kanye is so relatable!
Bless
I stumbled across this video. As an avid hip hop fan, I appreciate your deep dive. You're doing an amazing job just analyzing and just enjoying the music. Welcome to hip hop!!! So much incredible music to listen to!! Enjoy!!!
primetime still my favorite from the album, such a cool vibe. bars are amazing, flow from both, and the beat is incredible
That beat has been stuck in my head for the last 2 days. Love it
Hey Bob you should check out Otis Redding when you get a chance, like you did with Nina Simone. He’s a great soul singer from the 60s, he was sampled on the song ‘Gone’ as well. Check out his live performance from the Monterey Pop festival, where Jimi Hendrix made his public debut. It’s phenomenal!
he made a video about nina simone ?
@@mpamfi He listened to Strange Fruit separately after the yeezus reaction, not on video tho
@@mpamfi No, but he said he listened to her on his own time, and enjoyed her music.
fun fact: Jay-Z invented swag.
I respect you so much for not going too deep into gang and hood life on Murder to Excellence. You acknowledged that you're far removed from that life and don't understand. I'm from that life and I could never explain it enough for you to understand. I got out and definitely have survivor's guilt.
This is the 2nd video of yours that I've watched - the 1st was Tupacs's Me Against the World. I love what you're doing here, and am so glad to see hip hop opening your mind to a different world, in your own, our country. Again, much respect to you!! Now let me go smash like & subscribe and wait for a Beyonce video. Lol! ✌🏽❤
Your reactions are so entertaining. So excited for the list of albums I know you’ll get to at some point. Already crossed a lot off. Always awesome to see your reaction!
LET'S GOOO, just started watching but I'm super excited for Church, Paris and Primetime.
The analogy is very true, even though the sound is consistent, it's more of a mixtape rather than an album for me, but a KILLER ONE at that. Soooo many bangers.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this album so much. I was obsessed with it for years after it came out, marks a time in my personal life and many hip hop fans dont love it.
Been waiting on this one!
So amazing to see your reaction to New Day, one of my favourite songs of all time, fantastic sample, insane production, and two incredible introspective verses on becoming fathers from two of the best rappers of all time
You should do 4:44 by Jay-Z, one of his best albums with lots of good bars, thoughtful lyrics, and amazing production. His last album was in 2013, 4:44 in 2017, and nothing since
I second this
W
If he does 4:44 it's gotta b around when he does Ye, those albums are like the midlife crisis albums for Kanye and Jayz
I’m glad to hear 4:44 aged so gracefully. It was nice to hear Jay get as introspective as he did.
My favorite album! Thank you for all your videos!
Charlie Wilson is the lead singer of The Gap Band, a funk group from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. You probably know their songs “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” or “Outstanding.” Charlie works a lot with Tyler and Kanye.
Also, The Neptunes is Pharrell’s production team
The flow switches and picking up where the last person left off energy is really making me want a Run the Jewels reaction from you. Killer Mike and El-P both have incredible flows and lyricism that tend to borrow themes and lines from the last person, making truly cooperative projects that I feel you would enjoy. Plus the production on El-Ps end is just insane and next level for the state of rap. Definitely hope you get to them, starting with RTJ 1.
I knew you would like “Why I Love You” that song is amazing
I’m glad you enjoyed New Day. I remember when this album dropped. This song really hit home for me. Love everything about it.
Me too I used to listen to this since 2011 when I was 12 years old in middle school I heard it on the radio and we heard that in a jam that was my jam gym
Dang I wasn’t expecting this 🔥🔥 I’ve been bumpin this album like crazy lately too
I feel you man I saw the way that line hit you and it always hits me the same way especially cause I used to tell myself the same thing before ever hearing new day “ promise to never leave him even if his mama tweakin cause my dad left me and I promise never repeat him “ never fails to punch me in the throat
Thank you so much for doing this Bob 🙏🏽
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it yet, but a theory about the circus music at the end of some songs (and the beginning of others) is that they are meant as interludes from the more serious songs to the more lighthearted ones. All of the songs that have the circus music at the end of them, such as No Church in the Wild or New Day, are more meaningful songs that tackle more serious subjects, and they are immediately followed by songs like That's My Bitch, so it in a way signifies that the less meaningful and more fun, poppy songs are coming up next.
or maybe it's because kanye is a clown
00:21:00 you probably already know this by now, but The Neptunes is Pharrell William's and Chad Hugo's production duo, arguably two of the most influential producers and writers in hip-hop and R&B history, they were responsible for a huge ammount of hits in the 2000s, alongside many critically acclaimed albums like the two first Clipse (Pusha T and his brother No Malice) albums
You definitely should consider listening to Clipse's Hell Hath No Fury eventually, one of the hip hop classics entirely produced by the Neptunes
On Otis you missed a triple entendre, which is even more rare than the classic double entendre "Cock back snap back see my cut through the holes."
Jay is rendering to his haircut you can see through his hat. Cut through the holes can also be referencing a running back. (Cockback, snap back, running back) And finally it could mean after he clocks back and shoots someone, you can see his cut through the bullet holes.
The next song has a good line too, "cus I'm richer(Richard) and "prior(Pryor) to this shit was moving freebase" Richard Pryor famously set himself ok fire freebasing cocaine
No I.D. Produced your favorite beat on this album (Primetime) He Also taught Kanye how to make beats in high school.
kinda crazy to hear bob say he doesn’t know who he is when kanye literally mentions his name in the lyrics a few songs before 😂
kinda makes you think he doesnt pay attention to the lyrics…
On New Day that line where he says he won’t let his son take his mom to LA hit hard because it shows how Kanye really regretted what he did in the past and especially with his mom and how she couldn’t handle the “LA Life”
This is my favorite album of all time, glad you reacted to it!
so glad you did the deluxe too, one of the only to do it :D
Haters said This wouldn’t be released before the end of the weekend… Haters were WRONG
I really commend you for how you listened to Murder to excellence and breaking it down even though it’s hard to relate at all.
The reception when Kanye dropped MBDTF was that it was one of if not his best album(s). Watch the throne came out about a year after MBDTF, it got a luke warm reception when it came out.
I was a freshman in high school when mbdtf came out and a sophomore for watch the throne. They pretty much had the exact same hype/response when they came out here in Vermont
@@TheRealMrMackey I would say that most ppl enjoyed watch the throne for the most part, they just believe it wasn’t as good as MBDTF. That’ll forever be it’s biggest flaw is that most ppl I knew saw it as a not as good. I would say they are fairly close. When watch the throne first dropped I thought it was ok but as time has passed I’ve grown to appreciate it a little more. I still don’t think it’s on MBDTF level though 🤷🏽♂️. I believe I was 25-26 when those albums came out, I remember them times.
disagree on the likewarm. watch the throne was huge.
There’s so much to say about this album. It dropped the summer I graduated highschool along with Drakes “Take Care” so I partied to these albums heavily. Forgive me if this gets long winded-
“No Church In The Wild” was the first time people outside of the blogosphere paid attention to Frank. It was his first major feature.
Bruno Mars was supposed to be on “Lift Off” instead of Beyoncé.
“N- In Paris” was an absolute smash hit when it dropped. Even so much they once played it over ten consecutive times at a concert.
“Otis” also set the internet and radio on fire when it dropped. One of the most anticipated rap songs of all time. It was def a “you had to be there” moment.
“That’s My B” was a leftover from Dark Twisted Fantasy, along with “The Joy”.
“Who Gon Stop Me” was basically the first time major rappers made an electronic banger of that level. Definitely pre-Yeezus vibes. Never realized that.
“Why I Love You” is an interesting track bc they’re both rapping about the fall of Roc A Fella and how relationships between the former camp were broken. Almost like a pt.2 to “Diamonds Remix”.
This album has a very significant place in 2010s hip hop. Just as much as Dark Twisted Fantasy. It plays as Ye’s welcome back party to pop culture thrown by Jay. Even though they have alot of fun rapping on this album they most likely knew it was a one-off thing, so that’s how you get the level of production they went for and them pouring their emotions out on certain tracks. There’s a lot of reflecting on black America and how far black people have come on this album, which picks up where MBDTF left off, then Ye continues the theme further on Yeezus. Jay still has a very pro black attitude he gained on this album specifically. There’s subtle nods to black musicians that came before them (samples from James Brown, Otis Redding, Nina Simone) and the album plays as them realizing they have a responsibility to be outwardly pro black in the white spaces they mingle in.
Gosh I was literally listening to that’s my b today and was thinking it woulda been perfect on MBDTF
Watch the throne is one of two albums (other is Cruel Summer) Kanye made in collaboration with Jayz and the artists of the Good Music label to celebrate how massively loved MBDTF was.
No he made it to combat Drake's popularity, he said it himself on the Saint Pablo tour
he should do Cruel Summer next to complete the trifecta
That video you were talking about at the end of No Church in Wild, it's actually a short film, directed by one of the best directors alive, Spike Jonze. The film's called "We were once a fairy tale"
Too much anticipation for the tlop reaction🥶🤯
I love your vids man
I love the song “niggas in Paris” 🔥 quick fact; kanye and jay z actually got the idea to make a collab album from Drake and Lil Wayne with Drake’s come up kanye was feeling threatened by Drake, he’s talked about it in interviews Ect...
The part in No Church in the Wild that was reminding you of something reminds me of that part in flashing lights
Needed this. Thank you.
FYI I don't know if any one mentioned this but No I.D. was Kanye West's mentor from Chicago as far as producing, he taught Kanye how to make beats, and he is a damn good producer himself as you know now lol
Oh this album was the one directly before Yeezus actually. And MBDTF was incredibly well received when it came out. Well a bit more than that it really was monumental. This album was also great promotion for Frank right after he had to do something similar to Kanye in that he had to circumvent a label that wasn’t that interested in him even though they had him signed to self release his debut mixtape. (Nostalgia Ultra). It’s really great too by the way though I’m more excited for you to hear Channel Orange at some point, which was the one he did after the label finally started paying attention to him.
I’d also argue that this is more a Kanye album than a Jay Z one, the maximalist production aesthetic is all him and it stems from a very similar place to MBDTF. Jay Z just tagged along from a writing perspective. Its also why I’m less concerned about this being blocked. (Hopefully)
Cruel Summer was in between this and Yeezus
This is one of my favorite albums of all time, its just such a feel good album.
this album is very underrated by newer ye fans but the existence of this album alone is crazy if you think about it
Its 5x platinum..
Oh man when you said they produced the shit out of this one during lift off I shared a full belly laugh. Hilarious. Nice work. Incredible album to have experienced when it came out. Fresh out of high school, this album went so crazy it almost felt like they cheated. The combination of Ye and Jay Z, the throne, was something we weren’t ready for. The very first time I remember this happening, multiple mega stars joining forces, was on the song Swagga Like Us remix with T.I. Lil Wayne Jay Z & Ye. Can’t remember the exact year but I believe I was a junior in High school, so 08-09 sometime around there. When we heard all those rappers on one track, it sort of primed everyone and showed everyone that joining forces could lift everyone’s stock as far as mega star hiphop artists go. It opened the door for this album and the many collab albums we’ve seen since.
There was also Forever with Drake, Ye, Wayne and Em around the same time
Both of those songs have some of Kanye’s best verses
The Neptunes is a duo composed of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo
They show you the reason they both are tied for most grammys. Also Jay Z literally ran rap for like 10 years straight. IMO The Black Album is prime Jay-Z and has some of the best production (Kanye, Just Blaze, Pharrel, Timbaland, 9th Wonder, etc)
10 years? What years was that because DMX had 1998-2003
Drake been running rap for 11 years now

That's Mike Dean on the keys. You can see him adding sauce to a bunch of tracks that need that piano. You definitely know The Dream lol. Check out some of his writing credits. I only tuned in for Otis. Good stuff.
I love that you focus on lyrics. Production does play a part but the lyrics are the most important part when it comes to rap music.
The first 5 tracks on this one are Amazing, super nostalgia on this album for me especially on no church in the wild
New day is a fucking masterpiece!!

1:08:06 you got it BOB! Centerfold! that is what rap is, metaphores!!! This seems minor but is a very important piece of hip hop. You will need this lesson when you start listening to Lil Wayne his entire verses are metaphores. Bravo.

i remember listening this as i waited for the bus when i was a HS freshman in 2011...memories

This album is a classic collaboration. And the WTT concert was insane - Ye really put in the effort on the staging and overall experience.
And they ran back Paris at least five times at the concert I attended - it was so charged!!!
"New Day" is my favorite. So gorgeous
Love your videos man!!!! I look forward each new one! Quick fact, this released before Yeezus
Since you are getting into production this album is produced by some of the most influential producers and writers in modern hip hop/r&b: pharrell/the neptunes, swizz beats, rza, the dream... it may be fun to listen to producers, like playlist style, in addition to straight up albums.
Also the samples- otis redding, james brown, nina simone, the foundational hip hop break beat from Apache, curtis mayfield...these are all so integral to hip hop and they were able to incorporate them into this album.
It's very cool that there were so many nods to those artists from back in the day. Nina Simone is the only one I'm familiar with. I need to check out the others sometime too.
@@bobthepoppop You should check out The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo). In 2003, 43% of songs played on the radio were produced by them! They have an album called "The Neptunes Present Clones".

Loved the reaction 👏🏼 one of my favourite albums from the 2010s.
This album actually came out between Dark Twisted & Yeezus.
Watch the Throne was meant to be an EP of maybe 5 songs. Monster, So Appalled, The Joy & a few others. But those were used for Dark Twisted and then WTT turned into this full length LP. The Joy came from the G.O.O.D Friday releases back in 2010.
Monster & So Appalled were released as G.O.O.D Friday songs as well, which Jay-Z was apparently annoyed at Kanye for releasing them a throw away tracks.
Fun fact. Back in 2011 Watch the Throne didnt get leaked on the internet, like 90% of albums did back then. They only released H.A.M & Otis before the album came out, so it was refreshing to hear an album pretty much in full on its release date. They held back the CD release a few weeks, which helped it from leaking.
Don Jazzy (one of the producers on Lift Off) is a Nigeria producer, there's heavy Nigerian highlife genre influence in that beat/sound. Looking forward to your "Sometimes I might Be Introvert" by Little Simz reaction, got some Afrobeats/Nigerian sounds on it.
Iconic collab album, like no other
i reckon grave house is a better collab
14:24 bruh we gotta get some bob the poppop ad-libs where hes just laughing on a track or its the beat

There’s a really good New Day performance from watch the throne tour on youtube which i think you’d enjoy
About your high school friend... I have the same problem currently living with an identity crisis as I was through with high school about 2 years ago.
People really never ask why people behave they do, they judge them instantly, I tear up sometimes because I feel I have no self-control over my personality I am considering checking if I'm bi-polar.
I love when you share your thoughts in a longer format it really helps thank you for this so much.
By far one of my favorite albums
Hey Bob, don’t know if you’ll see this, but listening to your breakdown of Welcome to the Jungle and how the beat threw you off was interesting… Swizz Beats is the main producer on that track, and his production is very noticable in that there’s usually a distinct casio keyboard-esque sound in his tracks.
I say this because it’s nice to hear you get used to more of the producers when listening to the music. I heard you say Neptunes sounds familiar, and you can recognize RZA. I’m sure you can even point out a Kanye beat from a mile away by now.
Welcome to the Jungle is growing on me now that I'm more comfortable with the beat. I enjoy it more.
Coming back to watch his reaction to New Day

this was my first kanye and jay z album i got it after the VMA performance and i was like 9 and this shit changed how i listened to rap forever
I agree 100% with your take on Welcome to the Jungle
42:08 its a remix of a very famous EDM song. In 2015 i went to a FLUX pavilion show and they played this original song live. One of the best live music events of my life tbh
you should do Only One and FourFive Seconds before TLOP
Only One is a song for his daughter sang from his Mother's perspective
People keep telling me about this one... and I'm pretty much convinced it'll be impossible to do without crying.
Yeah, Primetime is one of my favorites too. Doesn't get enough love. Niggas in Paris video is a must. During the Watch the Throne tour they would end the show by perfoming this song 10-11x a show. I think they did it like 17x in a row when they finally did it in Paris for real. That's on youtube as well but it's pretty long.
I totally understand still wanting something to connect to with lyrics, but the music should be just as important. I really like that you're appreciating the music more. A lot of people who don't really listen to hip-hop and maybe don't like it (which is fine) say the same thing that rappers just talk one thing or another, or that there has to always be depth. Fat Bottomed Girls is one of my favorite Queen songs and I wouldn't say it's trash because it's about butts lol
Like I said in an earlier video, people don't appreciate the music AND lyrics together in rap the way they do other genres. Could be because there isn't anyone singing, because it always sounds better when you can sing it 😂
Anyway, glad you liked this album, which is a total celebration of the two. Jay is one of my favorite rappers. Looking forward to when you hit his stuff.
i can’t wait for the life of pablo reaction 😭😭
great video bro keep it up
This album is so underrated, they don’t make music like this anymore, especially Lift Off and Gotta Have It 😭
