Ferry is the true dark horse GOAT of trance and electronic music in general. He's the real deal. No ghost producers, he does everything himself - composition, producing, arrangement, and mixing. And best of all, he's a super humble and nice guy.
When idiots compare him to Armin or Tiesto i would like to slap them. Those two bought their career while Ferry worked his butt off to be where he is. Talent!
Thanks for the interview Ferry and Will. It was comforting to see that even big producers struggle with the arrangement puzzle sometimes. And also…less is more!
Wow, I remember first hearing Ferry in late 90's, such a cool sound...now to hear the 'story' behind those songs is great. And the inspiration for music producers, handling criticism, and staying relevant in constantly changing times was a blessing. Kudos Will for doing a great interview with Ferry, learned alot!
Amazing interview! I've been producing and remixing professionally under different names "Mr. Mig' , "H3dRush" and "Funk Generation", & 'MaxxBeats" for 3+ decades and I LOVE and agree with everything he says. Thanks for the great content brotha!
It's some years ago, but when Ferry played DJ at a club here in South-Africa, I went up to the DJ Box, being a pro DJ at the time myself, and shook his hand. Respect and energy movements at a quantum level needless to say.
Brilliant Will - i was at the gym yesterday and absolutely smashed it with a Ferry Playlist. I was fortunate to be clubbing when Ferry hit the scene. I met him a couple of times and he was such a lovely guy- his music is still so fresh
Ferry Corsten is amazing! I had the honour of spending a bit of time with him when he was in Australia in Feb and he was so down to earth and friendly, gave me some advice too :)
Fantastic interview Will! You can easily see the 'meeting of the minds' and that Ferry was really engaged and provided amazing insights and 'diamonds' of information.
@@EDMTips It was all really useful to hear his perspective and anecdotes (concerning Music Production) but one of the main things (for me) was his endorsement of 'track referencing' at the end of the interview.👍
Will and Ferry, you did a great interview together . Two guys so passionate about making music. Ferry is really an inspiration for me; I like his sound and creativity so much. In the interview, he is so respectful and down to earth. Really balanced guy. The fame didn't take him over 😎. And Will, also credits to you, and I think a huge compliment was given by Ferry: He watches your videos from time to time and learns from them! Man, that is a nice quote to capture !
I appreciate his versatility and his reminder to make music you enjoy at the same time he has his other foot aware of what is happening in current music while loving his melodic style too.
Many thanks Ferry and Will, some great advice there around big synth sounds and creating what motivates you, and Will thanks for your expert interviewing as well as being a great coach
@@EDMTips I a no expert 😉but I think you got the balance right, you asked some questions from your course candidates and you kept the conversation and questions flowing. The anecdotes from your time as a producer was also good to hear and it probably showed Ferry exactly what you were on about and was on his wavelength. Keep it up!!
Thank you so much for this content man!! amazing!! it means a lot to producers like me, I am from Brazil and this kind of education and content is realyyyyy expensive to buy from here, discovering this channel was a game changer for me!! God bless you guys!!
Love the bit about “losing the rhythm in breaks” either keep it short or keep the rhythm but in other ways…like arps or ghost notes… solid gold info right there.
Nice one Will! Ferry is one of my all time favourite producers. I've followed him from the very early days - buying pretty much everything he released and remixed on vinyl from that era. You can also add 'Pulp Victim' to the list of his pseudonyms - I've just dug out 'The World '99' on Neo records which was a quality label of the day. He's definitely been a massive inspiration and influence on my sound.
The one thing that stands out with every interview Ferry does is that he's consistent with being open to everything. What a fantastic interview Will! I hope the students learned a lot from it.
Good interview.Tech questions are so important.Especially how back in old days depth of track,if referb side chaining was more common the ballancing fixed verb.
most of points are valuble, main ones to me are layering which conferm my point on not having too much synths lon top of each other, also the arrangements methode, and grabing a track that you like and replicate it then change melody and harmony and make it yours. finally thank you for all you're dong man ❤
Met him on the baltic sea where he played on the cruise ship "Monday bar black and white cruise" (alot of years ago now) but what a super nice guy he really is. I mean i edited together a "fan" video on my YT of his track Total Eclipse and tweeted him about it (x'd) and he reacted to the post in like 1 hour =)
27:20 so true. Im new to producing and I tend to overproduce everything cause I feel like I dont know what I am doing yet. So i add more and keep changing stuff
This is gold. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial using the bass tips with gurbely bass (i appreciate it wont be the same as you wont have the same synth) and fills, be good to see it in practical context.
Very good interview with an absolute legend. The fact that he's playing with AI music makes me think he's ahead of the game again. I already make music with AI, just need more control. It will be massive.
Ferry's remixes for Barber's Adagio for strings and Ravel's Pavane pour un infante defunte made the great impression on me in late 90s and shape my music preference even nowdays. Electronic music cannot be "merry" otherwise it transform into pop
I love what he says about layering. A couple of years back every EDM producer would tell you you need to layer 257 synths in the drop to get a big sound and of course it mostly sounds like crap if you do that because it naturally introduces phasing issues. People really like to tell you complicated stuff to make it seem much harder than it actually is.
Get Markus Schulz on next since Ferry mentioned him. I got to hang with Markus for days in Bali and he even showed me stuff in his ableton sessions. Super inspiring. Good interview!
Just discovered this channel...Awesome interview! The last question is what many of us want an answer to, and as much as I respect Ferry, it was kind of disappointing and gatekeeper-ish. Why only Soundcloud? Why does he assume that everyone should follow a template? The question was how do we get our fave DJs to play our tracks, not how do we get started making music. (Thank goodness for the distribution options we have these days.)
Glad you enjoyed! Not sure what you mean about "gatekeeper-ish", though - he literally shared what he suggests. And where is he assuming that everyone should follow a template? The question was "Is there any advice you could give to someone who wants to be a full-time producer - or who just wants to be a successful producer?". His advice was, "Don't be afraid of putting your music out there and getting feedback" and "the fastest way to learn how to make good music is to reference existing music and to try and recreate it". In terms of your question "how to get your favourite DJs to play your tracks", the answer (from my experience) is 1. Make extremely good tracks that would fit in their set, and 2. build a relationship with them so you can send them exclusive music before other DJs". The simplest answer would be: Try and put yourself in their shoes. What would annoy you? (e.g. loads of people spamming you with half-ass tracks), and what would YOU want? (e.g. exclusive, incredible tracks that will fit into your DJ sets and make the dancefloor go crazy).
@@EDMTips Thanks for your response, Will, also for offering an answer to the question of getting heard, and ultimately, played, by genre/style-appropriate DJs...Just about the question though, you did add some detail in the actual interview when asking this final question, being "...wants to become a successful producer, you know, they might have a job that they love, but they wanna release stuff that's played by their favourite DJs. Is there any advice that you would give someone in that situation?", to which FC did not specifically respond and I just felt it was an excellent question that is rarely (never?) asked of someone in his position, but it's relevant to so many of us who don't want to DJ and increase the reach of our own music that way. As for the "template", I just referred to him suggesting grabbing someone's song and recreating it as part of his response to this.
Great interview... re AI, as a vocalist I can say I'm not at all worried... AI will never take away the experience and feeling of singing, which is an emotional expression... as a human this is a gift and robots can do what they like but they will never feel what the human feels when we sing... and to be replaced... don't care at all ... I will always prefer the experience of watching a vocalist sing live etc and will always support that ... maybe eventually robot music will become a genre ha ha
Finally someone who expresses his complains about the grooveless rolling basslines. Techno has been completely taken over as well. Used to be so innovative, let’s go back
I'm 49 years old, I used to be Trance Dj and Trance is my religion. To me Ferry is the real godfather of Trance and stands above all the rest. This guy is the trance god, and he's so humble, never makes any wave and does his own business. I have more respect to Ferry than to Armin. 19.11…Yes music was definitely better back then. Too much sub standard 19:28 music being released today, it’s almost too easy and too accessible which In turn means the market is over saturated. Also generally lower sales/ lower income from record sales has led labels to release more and more - where is this going??
