    What do you think, these vs the Aeropex or Trekz Airs?
    🌊
    For me, the only real decision to make is how much the mp3 only aspect is an issue and/or how much you dislike carrying your phone. These are going to be marketed heavily as a swimming headphone I'm sure, but I think for multisport athletes, the lack of phone requirement could be as big or more of a plus. I am a huge Spotify fan, and it's a gripe to have to get my music into mp3 form, but once it's done, man, game freaking on. That said, obviously a ton of people carry their phones on runs all the time, and when I have a run vest on, I do too. I'll say that between these and the Aeropex you can't really go wrong. For me, the lack of phone + swimming is just a win.

      How much time does the xtrainerz resist under water, i'm asking to know how much time do i have for my training sessions at the pool. Thanks!

      @@luigiquique1 Xtrainerz needs to be charged after 5-6 hours of use. When you turn it on a voice will tell you about the battery status: Battery High / Medium or Low or charge me. Swim sessions of 2 hours are no problem on battery medium. Didn't try it yet when when battery was low.

      I'm also doing a lot of swimming and running and therefore I'm really interested in these headphones! Glad to watch a review by somebody with the same issues :D
      I tried the first generation of the sony walkman waterproof headphones a couple of years ago and i felt devastatingly deceived for my money and like I could never trust a business that sells swimming headphones again. So could you please tell how you like their water performance only? Can you listen to the music better than to water rushing? Do you think you can listen to podcasts or audiobooks while swimming(asking for a friend)? Can you manage not-overly-careful flip turns without losing them? Do you think it's worth buying them particularly for killing time during lane swimming? Did you perhaps try sony walkmans before? Thank you so much in advance :)

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon

      @@lukashoffmann8499 Haha, I relate! No prob. YEah, so down the line: You can definitely hear a lot of water, yes, but you can also hear music. I would think of it like this: Think of all the water you typically hear, but then add in music. It would be wrong to say that it 'blocks' the sound of water, it really just 'adds in' music. I think you could listen to audiobooks, but you might miss some details. I don't think you'd have any problem with flip turns unless you're really going wild. I don't wear a cap with them and haven't had any issues, but if you've got a cap over your ears (And therefore over the top of the hook,) I expect you would be extra fine. They never felt loose. I prooooobably wouldn't use them open-water just because that would be tragic to lose them, but I suspect they'd be fine (could also attach a little float to them just in case). I think they're *great* for killing time in lane swimming. A lot of my swims are just long, slow distance, and boredom is a pressing concern; these are great for that. Never used the Walmans, sorry.

      Personally I don't like these at all for one major reason you didn't mention in this video. In order to make them waterproof they completely removed the charging port and now use some proprietary charging cradle. Nope. I need to be able to charge on the go for long trips or long shifts without having to carry around another thing. Another thing that I can break or get lost as well.

    I bought these headphones based on your review and I love them for swimming. The difference between normal mode and swimming mode is that in normal mode when you pause and play again, the song starts from the beginning. Contrary on swimming mode, when you play again it starts from where you left it.

    I just bought these after watching your review, and the sound quality demo you showed pretty much sums it up. The Aeropex / Open Air sounds a little muted, like background music, but the Xtrainerz sound like regular headphones (even without the earplugs) - they are plenty loud, good bass response and great mids. The packaging doesn't say it but it also supports the M4A format.

      Ha, happy to help! Yeah I've got good headphones on my desk so I always have this idea of "when I'm working out, I just want a beat," basically. I don't think any of the bone conduction headphones are ever going to be properly 'good' audio, but these are definitely a forward step over the old Trekz Air. Those are pretty muddy. The new ones still lack any sort of bass (even as someone who doesn't like bass heavy headphones,) but at least they're cleaner.

    I'm a 5 day a week swimmer who has yet to find a good pair of headphones. I was encouraged by this review and purchased them. The OpenSwim headphones are not for me. One huge benefit of bone conducting headphones is that the ear canal is unobstructed, so ambient sounds can be heard along with whatever is on the headphones. The OpenSwim headphones are great until water fills your ear canal, which is will do swimming even 50 yards. At that point the sound becomes all bass and bass drum, with mid-range and higher sounds completely lost: guitar, synth, instrumentation, voice--all lost. There is a reason the OpenSwims come with a set of earplugs included. In short, if you swim with earplugs, this product might work for you. If you don't and don't want to add earplugs to your swim, then this is definitely not for you.

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon  5 лет назад

      Options for getting music to mp3? I did some googling when I had these (I use Spotify mostly) and the options seemed iffy and unreliable, so I personally just gave up and used my old mp3s from like... 2006 or something, haha. Other options for headphones? While I normally hesitate to reccomend something I haven't personally used, the Aeropex seems like a great option. It's the updated aftershokz drivers that the XTrainerz have in a package that's bluetooth instead. They're probably really solid. On the 'headphones I've personally used,' man I just love the Trekz Airs so much. They've been my go to for the last 18mos. Personally, in-ear buds just don't work well for me. They *never* stay in, I hate the feeling of sweat in my ears, and they eventually unseal and then I can only hear one of them. I know a lot of people have good luck with Jaybirds, Powerbeats, and SoundSports, but they're not for me, so I don't know them well.

      No problem, happy to. I've seen those and heard generally good things about them, but I just knew I would never get those dang buds to stay in my ear. Especially if you've already got a good chunk of music in mp3, something like this probably would be an easy swap. Then you could use the earplugs if you wanted to get the most similar sound! I was super excited to see the 2yr warranty on this. It seems like, with the products I've 'worn out' in the past, that 12-24 mos is really where it all seems to hit. Would be nice to at least make it 2.5 years or whatever, ha.

    Hi Justin,
    Thanks for this video. Definitely very informative! Here's my dilemma. I am an avid triathlete myself, and enjoy the swimming aspect of the race. That said, I need to wear earplugs as I can't stand the feeling of water in my ears. So far so good, as far as these Xtrainerz go. However, the interface with MP3 is a HUGE turnoff for me. I know Bluetooth is still a ways out, but I did some research and it seems like the Delphin has an answer to that. That device does have Bluetooth capability, BUT they require plug in ear buds...which would then prevent me from putting the ear plugs in that I need. So...are there underwater bone conduction headphones like the Xtrainerz that can be plugged in?
    Thanks a bunch!

    • @zbwdpt

      @@zbwdpt Man, I feel for you, because your needs with earplugs remind me of my own needs with normal headphones (which is to say that, no matter how many tips and fit options they claim to have, I just *cannot* get normal sport earbuds to stay in while I run) I also 100% relate to not loving the mp3 only aspect; all the music on my XTrainerz is from like... 2010 ha. Unfortunately, I can't think of any option yet. Bluetooth can physically only penetrate something like a few inches underwater. My hope is that down the road, Afteshokz will do something like Garmin did on their new watches: let you connect to Spotify and 'download' the music. That would be AMAZING and basically my end-game headphones. As is, I am not aware of any bone conducting, wired, waterproof headphones.
      I really thought about this and was even trying to think of like... waterproof adapters or whatever, but the real rub is that if you *can't* use earbuds and need fully waterproof, wired bone conduction, I'm not aware of any. Everything I know of is just mp3. Bit off the wall, but you could TRY getting one of the wired aftershokz and look up waterproofing sprays and such, but... Honestly, seems risky. Sorry man. :(

      Appreciate the quick response! I’m glad you understand my wishlist. I love my Garmin watch! Totally worth every penny for what I use it for. And the Jaybirds I use for running are perfect for me. Swimming is just that last “if only” I’ve been trying to modify. I may still give the Xtrainerz a shot. Could be fun dusting off the old iTunes account and seeing what I can pull up. Are blue ones an option for purchase?

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon
      @JustinDoesTriathlon  4 года назад +2

      I wouldn't say the music changes, but it's important to remember they don't block the sound of water rushing. Imaging the sound of water like you normally hear, but then add in also being able to hear music on top of that. Bone conducting headphones are interesting because they don't block any ambient sound, so it's basiclly like adding a soundtrack to your head. They get pretty loud! Not crazy loud, but you can definitely hear them. They're never going to be audiophile headphones or replace the headphones you use at home, but they're perfectly good for adding music to your swims or runs.

    Hi Justin - great channel. I'm looking for a new pair of wireless headphones with built-in music capability. I had the Sony Walkman BCR-NWWS410 model that I purchased in March 2018 and they literally died this morning. I'm getting into the triathlon world so something like the Samsung Galaxy ear buds (also have built-in MP3 capability) won't work as they aren't waterproof. Have you look at the Sony line at all? Just curious. I'm hesitant to purchase another pair if they are going to die after 2 years. Thanks!

    • @JustinDoesTriathlon

      Great question! I haven't. Unfortunately I have really picky ears, and earbud style phones like those never stay sealed in my ear. They always wiggle out and I spend the whole workout trying to shove them back in. Haven't used those in particular, but I've experienced that trouble for like 15 years, haha. Sorry I can't help. :( XTrainerz do have a 2 year warranty though, which is nice!

    Do you think the Aeoropex which have BlueTooth are OK for swimming? The website says the Aeropex are not for swimming but I won't buy these without BlueTooth and would only be using them for swimming laps on endurance swims (5,000 yds+) so I want to make sure they can be water resistance for that long and with all the flip turns. Thoughts? Thanks!

    Am I glad I discovered the Xtrainerz. I had the Finis Neptunes before for swimming sessions but the Xtrainerz are much much better. Better sound and better comfort! I even prefere them for during my running trips as I can hear everything around me while listening to music. If you're not a swimmer than maybe you should considder a bluetooth model. Xtrainerz are stand alone model.

      I always get a little nervous when talking about iTunes because if you have music with DRM licenses on it they probably won’t work. That said, as long as you have normal mp3s that don’t have copy protection, you’ll be fine. As long as they’re working on your Sony and just *stored* in iTunes you’re probably good. But yeah, it’s super easy to drag and drop. It just opens a windows explorer window and you copy them over, and then they play.

      Hey there! I haven't tested it for spoken word, and I can't anymore either (my pool is closed... ) I would lean to saying yes, but I can't say for sure. The thing is, you still get the sound OF water, you just get music/audio over that. It's not like they're actually blocking the water itself. For music, that's fine, but I can't say for sure on the spoken word.

      Sadly, there's no legal option that I'm aware of. I know there are some apps that let you 'download' Spotify but I don't think those are on the up-and-up, technically. Definitely a very strong frustration with the current state of DRM and how we access music. Everything on my XTrainerz is from like... 2005. Bit of an out there idea, but if you're in the US, a lot of libraries have (or at least used to?) CDs to check out... I don't know the legality of getting MP3s from that though, or if they even have MP3s anymore. But yeah, personally I pay for Spotify Premium, and no MP3s there. I think the dream state would be a device that's similar to what Garmin does with their 645 Music; basically the watch itself connects and authenticates to Spotify, and then downloads the music for offline listening to your connected bluetooth headphones. I'd love if the Xtrainerz could do something similar.
