    To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

    I had the JBL for about 2 years. The main disadvantage is the inability to skip forward, change volume, etc. while swimming, since you have to lock it to touch for swimming. This meant that some of my songs were always too quiet and others too loud. The only way to adjust is to stop swimming, stop the device, turn on again, adjust volume, and then lock for swimming.
    And the touch didn't always respond as it should when not locked. (it would take me several attempts to switch between mp3 and blue tooth, for example.) It has also stopped being recognized by my computer. Perhaps the fact that the terminals are on the devise itself and so get wet makes them more vulnerable to damage. Now that my computer doesn't recognize it, I can't upload music or delete songs I no longer want.
    I've just purchased Shokz openswims S700. The terminals for charging and connection to computer are in a cradle, not on the device itself. I hope that will safeguard them. Great sound on dry land, and today I tried it in the pool and was very happy with the sound. You need to use the ear plugs provided because otherwise the volume will change as you go in and out of the water. The ear plugs are super comfortable, and don't fall out in the water. The device is also very comfortable - I didn't feel it at all as I swam. I love having button controls, and the volume buttons are sensitive, meaning you just get a little bit more or less volume with each press so that you can really adjust it as you please. All the functions worked. Not having blue tooth is really not a problem for a device you use for swimming, since you can't use blue tooth in the water anyway. I actually like the devise so much that I'm buying Shokz openruns for use as a "dry land" blue tooth device at home - where I like to listen to music but to be "available" to the rest of my family when they talk to me.

    Honestly, this is the best review I've seen so far. Great job, Andy! I've been looking around for the best option to buy, and two of these three earphones were constantly mentioned in the previous videos I found. Only one thing that concerns me: they say that all earphones intended for swimming don't last that long and may last up to 18-24 months. Is that a fact? What do you think? Thank you! (Ps: I'm not a professional swimmer, I'm just looking for the best option to listen to music on those days that I can have a couple of hours to swim or dive for fun and relaxation)

      Exposure to either sea water or chlorinated pool water tends to kill not only earbuds sooner but all your swimming gear, so there is merit to those claims unfortunately. If you rinse your earbuds after each use and keep them dry, it might help prolonging their use

    I just found this video after looking up Aftershokz OpenSwim. Have you considered updating this two year old video to discuss new entrants? As a user with single sided deafness, I rely on bone conduction science for my hearing assistance in land. As a swimmer, I spent years frustratated that I couldn’t download an audiobook and play it while I am swimming. I can get really bored swimming but if I swim while listening to a book or favorite songs, I find I swim for a longer time, a faster place, and burn up a lot more calories.

    Well done, very professional in every way... legendary review... I've used both the Sony and the JBL for a number of years and agree with your review. Over time the buttons on the Sony failed and I can no longer use them in the water. Unfortunately I lost my JBL headphones, but the were going strong for almost 2 years (I got use to using the power hook and touch controls) the charging port messed up and needed cleaning, I also switched cables a few times. I have recently bought the Sony WF-SP900 (AUS) they look good, feel good but have failed from the start with swimming. I think I'm ready to try the Aftershokz Headphones now.

    Nice comparison... in my experience I'm using the sony 3 generations of underwater headphones! for at least 8 to 9 years now! once you get used to swimming while listening to music, there is no going back! if you forget your headphones to the pool, good luck running back home, its jus not worth swim without it! but I'm not hear to talk about that but about "SONY!" i've used 3 generations 6 different headphones and they all keep dying of water seeps in through the button (ya the same plethora of button you so happy about!) the buttons will eventually starts activating on its own and then goes numbe and then the headphone it self will go unresponsive to anything(basically die every single time)! sound quality is good! and i never ran out of battery so far, bcoz i charge b4 each day of swim... i was looking in to bone conductive, coz less holes for water to seep through, but no heart to leave Sony! but swimming becomes much more expensive bcoz of this unreliable issue!

    After watching your review i bought Sony NW-WS623 for swimming only.
    The sound quality was pretty bad, I mean you can hear some main beats, but hardly any voices, even at loudest settings.
    Moreover, they are pretty big - a fact you did not mention. I had issues with swimming front crawl and accidently removing headphones when I put my arm forward during the stroke.
    I mainly purchased them with the idea to listen to podcasts, but they are pretty useless in that matter - you cannot hear a single word during the swim, unless you casually swim front stroke.
    I will test Aftershokz soon, hopefully they work better in the matter of comfort and sound quality.
    Nice video overall though!

      You don’t have to worry about that unless you keep your head underwater for 30 minutes straight. The IPX8 waterproof rating means that the headphones can be submerged in up to 1.5meters of water for 30 minutes. That’s how they do the tests but it does not apply to swimming

    I don’t know if you still read the comments but thank you for te comparative i spend yesterday all evening trying to find The best MP3 for Swimming and your review is the best i’ve seen ! However if you read this I’d like sole advice.
    I really don’t need bluetooth connection and i’m good with little specs i just want to listen my music when i swim and swim only. I had a Nabaji MP3 but i really feel that music coming trough your hears under water can be bad because if there is a little bit of water it’s ruined.
    So is the Sony really good all the times? Is the sound really better than the Xtrainerz? Because bone conduction seems to be perfect for me especially when i swim with other people so i don’t have to take it off but is the quality of sound good enough? Of is there really a gap beacause if you put the Sony right it will be much better?
    Thank you again

      Since the Sony buds seal your ears perfectly it will sound much better than any bone conducting headphones including the Aftershokz. I cannot tell whether the Aftershokz' sound is good enough for you however I was enjoying swimming with them but I'd plug in my ears to have the best sound possible. If you want to stay aware of your fellow swimmers than the Aftershokz is a better choice, no doubt about that. Hope I could help... 😎

    This review is the best and most detailed I have seen. I have used the Sony for 7 years for running. When I started using them for swimming for one hour per swim, they broke after three weeks. I'd like to know whether Sony or AfterShokz are capable of being used for one-hour swims? As AfterShokz are IP68 rated, they are water resistant in fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

    • @AndysTechTone
      @AndysTechTone  9 месяцев назад +1

      After 7 yrs of use your Sony headphones were probably not 100% to begin with. During swimming your head is not submerged into water constantly so the headphones are supposed to be okay for an hour long swim. Make sure you always rinse them after swimming though as that can improve their longevity in my experience.

    Hello Andy - simple question: Which of the three plays loudest?
    Why I ask: Years ago I bought the Sony - but all I could ever hear was a very faint whisper of music behind the sound of moving water.
    I swim quietly, my hearing is tested, but nevertheless ... I threw the gadget away.
    The industry seems rather to protect itself from liability claims for tinnitus instead of delivering acceptable volume.
    Is the music here really audible, can it give you a boost?

The headband is significantly shorter than the Shokz (haven't seen the JBL in real life) and anyone with a hat size of 60 or above will run into problems. • @AndysTechTone
      @AndysTechTone  2 года назад +1

      You cannot expect audiophile quality sound from any bone conduction headset. Not even close. It’s not about the type of music you listen to that’s just the current state of the technology. On the other hand, having some music during swimming can still be better than not having music at all. That’s the right thinking here in my opinion

    Hi Andy. Great review! Can you please comment on the legibility of words in podcasts/audiobooks when swimming freestyle (crawl)? I've tried the Aftershokz and the noise of bubbles going past my face when I exhale tends to obscure some words (it'd be fine for music). Are the Sony better in this respect? I've heard others complain that water gets inbetween the ear bud and your ear drum and muffles the sound.

    Nice video. So, xtrainerz if used in a quiet room do they sound like a regular earphones or somewhat similar to sony or they still lack lots of detail in sound? I have a hard time deciding which one to choose for surfing because I am not under water all the time and not sure which one would be the most comfortable under the wetsuit hood. It is good to have a good seal for cold water not to stay in ear as it brings its own issues in a long run so would kinda choose sony but a they seem so bulky and uncomfortable. On the other hand under the same wetsuit hood would be nice to be aware of my surroundings which isn't crucial but still a nice thing as bone conduction tech brings that option. Is the sound a lot different if its just being in the sea not much ambient sounds except waves breaking. Never tried bone conducting earphones hard to decide. Andy, what are your thoughts? Cheers

    • @AndysTechTone
      @AndysTechTone  2 года назад +1

      The bone conduction sound lacks bass almost completely and the rest is only okay too. Underwater you get more bass and better sound overall with bone conduction. The Xtrainerz might be a better option for using it under a wetsuit hood as the Sony could get really uncomfortable if the hood pushes the buds deep in your ear canals. I’d give the Xtrainerz a go if I were you. Some sound is still better than no sound at all…

  • @Slysoft_

    I am currently comparing the aftershokz and the sony. I like both of them, but I am leaning slightly to the aftershokz just because of their simplicity and size. Between the two, is there a large difference in sound quality? I know that the waterproof tips significantly reduce the quality of the sony such that it should be comparable to the aftershokz. I am wondering if I might find the aftershokz jarring when switching from underwater to above water, for example swapping from normal lap swim to using a kickboard. I am getting these purly for swimming as I would use some jaybirds above water. Any thoughts?

    • @AndysTechTone
      @AndysTechTone  3 года назад

      Why not use the Sony so you can get the best of both worlds. Fully waterproof mp3 for underwater use with decent sound quality (sealed tips) and even better sound for use above the water and on land with the normal tips and Bluetooth. I feel like even with the sealed tips you can get a much better sound from the Sony than you can get from the Xtrainerz.

    • @Slysoft_
      @Slysoft_ 3 года назад

      @@AndysTechTone Truth. I think the sony are the best overall value for that reason. The main reason why I am looking at buds just for swimming is I prefer the jaybird vista for most cases since they are truly wireless and just a lot smaller and more comfortable. I'd been looking at these sony nw623s for a while but I had heard that the sealed tips made the sound so quiet that it was hard to hear. If you think that they sound as good or better than the aftershokz then I might go with those just because of the additional value.

    • @AndysTechTone
      @AndysTechTone  3 года назад

      @@Slysoft_ I never had such a problem with the sealed tips, I don't think that's an issue. But that's just me. I get such a perfect fit with the Sony that it creates a vacuum in my ear canals so I could even use the normal tips underwater. Not that I ever did. But again, this varies from person to person. The Aftershokz only sounds good if you plug in your ears with the supplied earplug, so the advantage of not having to put anything in your ear canals is not there anymore. Plus the Sony is better built, more robust. Both are comfortable with swim caps on, no chafing either. I agree with the Vistas, they are great for running and other workouts.
