    Thank you :)
I've used the Peak Design Capture camera clip for 2 years and I love it. But this week I thought I'd check out a cheaper version and see how it compares to the industry leader. Camera clips have completely changed my photography for the better. I always have my camera to hand now, and miss less shots because of it. So, if there's a cheap clip that does the job, I want to know...

In regards to the size and it digging in, Ive personally never had that issue (but then I don't tend to go scaling up mountains or anything that extreme so perhaps that could be why)

However, I never had any trouble BUT as Mr. Popsys said the size might be uncomfortable in _some_ cases. TLDR: Get the cheap one if you don't drive a Lexus - it will do it's job!

@@delanyinspiron6400 it is certainly not getting any smoother for sure. It may seem really obvious but the first time i encountered this i realized that the security bolt kept blocking an easy sliding. The bolt seems to loosen while hiking and blocking the shoe from sliding in/out doing so.
Besides that yes it certainly isn't as smooth as the focus-ring on a Takumar but I think it's nothing that some fine tuning (sandpaper, oil?) couldn't solve. However, still very very usable here for my 1-2 10km hikes/climbing each month for 9 months now.

The tightening screw is more for securely mounting an action camera so it doesn't jiggle about when mounted.
The wider frame accommodates wider pack straps, something the older versions of the Peak Design once did. Once Peak started making their own packs, they trimmed down the width to fit their packs specifically.
Bonus: the design of the Utebit is based on the original design of the Peak Design capture clip version 1. The Peak used to have a tightening screw. When version 3 came out without it, they had to release a revised GoPro adapter kit to the plate could be tightened down.

  • @meumann

If the size bothers you, just set it diagonally to match the width of the backpack strap. It's worth noting that the button (red one in this case) is what you have to press for quick release. For a third of the cost, this is a no-brainer. Any other issue, just find some DIY way to solve it. I put a drop of multi use oil on mine to not have the cheap metal plate scraping as much when putting it back.
Now... let's talk about a strap placed on the belt. Can someone just make one that is cushoned on the inside so you don't end up with a red mark on your hip after a day walking around an event photographing?

I also really love the PD clip, but one of the best things about it is that it uses an Arca Swiss plate. That may not be that useful to you because you don't use a tripod very often, but I use a tripod quite regularly and I can always leave the plate on. That is a huge time saver. About two years ago I bought something similar to the Utebit for about 10€ and, apart from it not being very smooth, I ended up not using it because the plate didn't fit on my tripod.

If this is still anything, I was in China over the summer, I saw a xiletu clip, didn't buy it then. Recently found it on aliexpress for the same price, but with an extra "PD pro pad" clone and shipped to the US! Crazy despite being manufactured for the Chinese market. Just got it a week ago.
It's fantastic, 120g in total, only 5mm longer than the PD, comes with an arca swiss plate that can be rotated 4 ways. The plate can be screwed with a hex allen key OR a coin/flathead, the groove is semi rounded for quarters. The button release also is able to slide? like the silent switch on iphones to lock itself in place, very quick to unlock in a single motion & release camera.
I think it solves most of the issues with the utebit, basically PD clip for $20. Using the pad, it comfortably holds a r6 with battery grip and adapted sigma 100-400 C.

I couldn't justify the price of the PD clip so bought a very similar cheap one for less than a tenner. And I agree, totally changed how I take photos. My camera feels safer and more accessible. I generally hate camera straps so would often carry by hand, which whilst hiking is a risky one.
My only issue is with my decision not to get the PD based on price. I've spent close to £2k on the camera and lenses I'm carrying (a lot for some people, a tiny amount for others). Felt a bit stupid being concerned about spending an extra £50. But, the cheap clip has worked very well. I also remember the newer PD version possibly being too small to fit on my bag strap so that would have been a non-starter.

Thanks for sharing! Couple of comments, having used both cheap and v3 capture clip:
The old capture clip version had a tightening screw as well. Utterly useless. It made holstering the camera way harder. Getting rid of it was the right move going from v2 to v3. Similarly, the capture clip is far easier to holster without looking and is smoother to holster/unholster vs the cheap one.
The capture clip has smoother contours and the smaller profile are better regardless of your size because it wont dig into your body like the cheap one will.
You can’t tighten the mounting plate nearly as tight using the D-ring vs an allen key. My plate always came loose after a short while using a d-ring. I personally never had a need to remove the peak design plate. Just lock it down with an allen key and never think about it again! Also it’s much lower profile than the cheap one, so it is less obtrusive day to day.
The peak design one can also take the camera strap anchors without getting in the way of holstering the camera. Cheap one has loops to add anchors but they interfere with holstering.
All said and done, I emphatically say that the peak design one is well-worth the cost difference!

That little SQUARE hangin' out on the bottom of my camera, in my mind, is not the best design! And so, I have to keep looking. :-/ Cheers, bro!

I love my pd clip. Its a secure thing and cost is relative. Camera bouncing of the clip during bike ride would definite cost more. I have 2 of them one fixed on a backpack and other removable to be used with different backs. It never failed and the plates are compatible with gimball heads. Only thing I miss on these clips is a easy way to connect the lens cap. So I won't loose it like you loose the allen key. ;-)

I looked at the Peak Design at CAD 140 and the Utebit (not available under that name, but there are identical items under various names on eBay) at CAD 22, and being a cheapskate I chose the cheaper of the two. After all, I thought, how can the Peak Design one be worth THAT much more? BIG MISTAKE! The cheap one is a piece of junk! It is almost impossible to get the camera to clip into it without using both hands and craning one's neck to look at it, and the location of the release button means you have to do contortions to get the camera out of the clip. I would never feel safe with this thing, as it would be far too easy to drop the camera when using it. So if you want a unit that actually works, I guess you have to pay $100, but I'm not likely to do so, as just for the short period I tried this, I found that this is NOT a practical way to carry a camera! Even my little Olympus E-M10 with the tiny kit lens wobbles around alarmingly when walking. Maybe it would work with a compact camera, but I wouldn't feel comfortable using it with a mirrorless camera, and certainly not a full frame camera.

I buy most things from B&H in NY City, USA. They have a weekly deal section called "The deal zone!" I have got all my Peek Design stuff from them off the deal zone! I however have the luxury to wait them out till the item is on sale! Get 40-60% off most of the time. I love Peek Design and buy everything they offer, just well thought out product.

I bought one of the cheap clips from eBay to try. Despite trying the clip on a few hikes, I just couldn't get on with the concept of having my DSLR hanging from my backpack's shoulder strap and abandoned the clip. However, It was a worthwhile and cheap exercise which saved me from wasting £54 on the PD version which would have been consigned to the drawer instead of the eBay cheapie.

The UTEBIT seems to be a copy of the Peak Design V2 (yours is the V3 version); I've had both the V2 and V3, but sold the V2 recently. The V2 was larger, like the UTEBIT, but also had the extra screw for tightening the arca clip. Something they apparently took away on the V3 which is a bit weird, but honestly I never found it particularly necessary as I started using it either. Thanks for another great vid mate! Cheers /Fred

I didn't buy the Peak Design at first because like all their products it is way Over-Priced. I'm a production engineer, it costs them around 4€ to make it!
I did buy the "Fotima" which is basically the Utibit from this video and I do have a broader frame so it fitted. It worked well for around 4 months, then:
    1. The low quality aluminium scagged up and it sometimes took 30 seconds to get the camera off it.
    2. The camera plate would not stay put - the rubber is not good enough, so the camera started swinging on the screw!
    3. The 2 screws which hold it to the strap are a bit too proud so the bottom of the camera was worn and has marks (not a big issue).
The Fotima - Utibit was good enough however to get me hooked and decide I need one.
I then paid up, over-paying makes my brain hurt but I bought the Peak Design and it is much much better! I presume they have so many patents and spare un-earnt money now that noone can make a cheaper one. Basically you're stuck with it and now I need it so basically PD have successfully screwed us all.
It works great but I have absoloutely zero brand loyalty so will not buy their other over priced products.
James - you got the right one first - hats off sir.

Interesting, I just tried one of the Ulanzi versions as I bought their F38 tripod, it's the claw version and the clip itself is excellent, and I love the claw system on the clip, but it also means you have to use the claw system on your tripod and there's some play in it, so just doesn't work, so now I've had to order another Ulanzi plate as they do a Peak Designs compatible one, I'll get there one day...

  • @CymBan

The Peak Design v1 and V2 camera clips (u have the v3) had the turnscrew as well. The Utebit is actually just copying the v2 PD Clip with some small cosmetic differences. It's not meant to be turned everytime u're taking it off/on its just supposed to increase the tension to stop it moving but still be light enough to pull the camera in and out. PD removed theirs because they said ppl weren't using it much. I also have a v2 clip and concur. It was too much hassle to try and get the tension juuusst right to hold the plate but still be free enough to slide the camera in and out easily.
One thing I love about the new v3 clip and plates is their low profile size. Esp compared to the v1/2 plates. They're so small now I don't have a problem leaving them on the camera all the time. Esp since they can also act as an anchor point for straps AND as a mounting plate for any Arca swiss tripod. So now all 3 of my cameras have the plates and I can switch between strap, clip or tripod w/o having to fiddle with anything. I only have to take off the plate if I plan to use the battery grip. I still keep one of their allen keys in an obscure pocket in my bag tho just in case :)
BTW if I'm doing an event with 2 cameras I use a strap on each and the clip. Whichever camera I'm not using gets clipped into place /w its strap still around my neck so it doesn't swing about annoyingly.
For Carnival, where I usually use all 3 bodies, I'm toying with the idea of having my main camera on a strap around my neck as normal but putting a camera and clip on each hip. I'd then connect the PD Leash via one connector to each hip camera going across my shoulders/neck. ie the strap would have a camera on each end If I get bounced and a camera drops the clipped in camera on the other hip would stop it from falling.

The screws to tighten down the capture clip can be a bit short for some backpack straps. I literally caught my A7R3 w/$2K lens inches above rocks when one of the screws came out and the whole clip ripped off my strap. I wish there were some more positive way of locking the screws. I may have to drill them for safety wire as I use to do on my road racing bike. Cautionary tail since you're clearly a frequent user of the capture clip as am I. Thx for the videos James.

I bought a version of the cheap one on amazon and my camera has fallen out of the clip 3 times (!) because I didn't lock it down with the twisty screw thiing you said you wouldnt use. Granted, I was swinging my bag up to my shoulder to put it on, but still...3 freaking times! ya i prob should've learned my lesson after the first time...still i would really like to try the Peak Designs one.
Also, the mounting plate on the cheapo one doesnt stay screwed tight to my camera (there's not rubber foot on the plate) so while my camera is secured to my shoulder strap, it still swings left to right and feels very unsecured. Also, the cheapo one is a bit wide and digs into your bicep if your move your arm inward across your chest, but at the same time my hiking pack's straps are kinda wide and i dont think the PD clip would fit so theres that too.

The Utebit design is a copy of the original PD Capture Clip. The original Capture clip had the same screw to tighten the Arca Swiss wedge so that the Clip could be mounted on a tripod. That's why there is a screw thread for a tripod mound in the back of the utebit.

I have a cheapo clip and its eh... it kinda does the job but can destroy your camera. Story time! So I was climbing some rocks with the camera on the clip, when suddenly the clip just let off my camera. Left it with a hefty scar on the lens hood which could have easily be a shattered front element. The camera didn't roll downhill since I was wearing the strap in addition to the clip. If it wasn't for the strap, rip 200d.
I later found out that the little metal pin that holds the plate is just barely too short to do the job. I still use that clip but I have to be extra careful with it.

This is one of the best accessories I have bought along with the 3 legged thing L-Bracket that has the Peak Design plate attached. The play in the peak design is there for the ease of user experience. Any tighter tolerance and you’d have to pull it DIRECTLY out or deal with a jam. They designed the perfect clearance, and thats why you dont hear it when you wear it or have that plate on a camera. Get a small rig cage with an allen holder.

really unfortunate you didn’t do more research before you made this video. you completely ignored the BIG red button on the cheaper clip which is what releases the camera quick, not the screw. how did you actually miss that? really lost me with the review when you focused on the screw more than the actual release mechanism.

I don't think a broader frame would really save the cheaper clip unless someone is _super_ big. I'm built like a Panzer but that looks like it would get in the way of my arm too. Then again I can reach my arms around me to touch each shoulder blade, so maybe I'm an odd one out.

I know this comment is a bit late James but just watched this as I have an Utebit clip. I have been using it now for several months and never had an issue with it except fitting it to my shoulder strap, bit of a tight fit if it's chunky. I never use the tightening screw as the engineering ensures it doesn't rattle. The Arca Swiss mount means I can also mount it on my tripods with interchanging the tripod clips.

You can easily remove the bolt from the PD plate and replace it with one that has a D ring. Just push it down and unthread it. Also, don't touch your face.
