    I think using flat pedals has the advantage of changing foot position on the fly which can work other muscles in the legs giving others that are worn out a break . Changing leg position is also helpful going inside and outside . So flat pedals gives more options but its a learning process and takes time to reap the benefits .

    For me the height of the seat depends on what I'm doing. Do I want to ride comfortably, safely, and efficiently? Then I go for the high seat, 6:32 style. Do I want to jump and take sharp turns? Then I go with the low saddle, 6:45 style. Best thing in the world is to have those seats that go from low to high and viceversa automatically ( 0:39 ). I wish I had one of those but oh well, by now I have already memorized the perfect low and high numbers for my seat. Anyway, great video as always guys. Keep it up!

    I've found being really active with the dropper post is a good habit to have on trail rides with variations in terrain/gradient. Sometimes I will drop it for a turn, immediately pop it back up most of the way to gain some speed. I figure my legs muscles can only work so hard, and holding my weight up is work they don't need to be doing, so let the mechanism do some of the work.

    I still position the pedals where they'd be on clilpless pedals while on flats if I need to go fast. If I'm just cruising then yeah middle of the foot . I do swing the bike like crazy when I stand up though, I find it helps, like if my right leg is pushing down, I swing the bike to the left .

    • @adamnorton748
      @adamnorton748 3 года назад +3

      Swinging the bike like crazy helps you get the pedal down but it is less efficient to the ends of actually making the bike go
      Try some quick starts like that in a place you can go back and look at the line your bike takes. It will probably be really wiggly(those super powerful cranks send part of the power sideways, since the bike was leaned over when the power was added)
      ..... buuuut as long as you are really stoked the whole time you're probably doing it right :-)

      @@adamnorton748 As long as the bars are angled down as you go from left to right and not turned much on the horizontal axis it is efficient (you use all the top of the tire this way - the ballooning of the tire going back and forth from edge to edge may explain why it feels more efficient than keeping the bars straight). Also you are allowing the bike to move with the movement of you pedaling, where as if you are expending energy trying to keep the bars straight you are fighting the bikes movement... not sure why I felt the need to try and break it down this far, but I hope it helps.

    • @ultimatist

    The circle tip is the only real useful one and maybe seat height. In Bmx racing 1 gear. We say big circles at the beginning and little small circles at top speed. Also paddling your ankles I’ve heard. For pro tips and pedalling though I would say that’s all about sprint routines. Starts 5-7 cranks lowish gear with 2 mins rest until you drop off by 15% of best time. Up hill sprints for power and down hill sprints for top end leg speed.

  • @2wheeler58
    @2wheeler58 3 года назад +2

    Is pedaling strictly engaging leg and butt muscles or is tilting the torso just a bit towards every pedal down stroke okay, too? I ask because doing this actually makes it easier pedaling which includes going up hill or into the wind ...it makes me feel like I am cheating ...am I?

I, like many of you on here, raced for many years and never really considered a stationary bike as anything more than a cardio tool. They more often than not cause more bad habits than they are worth. Instead invest in a well manufactured set of rollers. You can get so good on them that you can ride without touching your bars or if your really skilled you can bunny hop on a ridged bike and still keep on riding. Anyway, rollers are such a better investment in my eyes.

    I try to pedal as smoothly as I can but there's always a "thud thud" sound when I pedal. sometimes it will sound once during a full turn, sometimes twice. if I change to a higher gear, sometimes the sound will go off. it's like when I pedal "too easy", the sound will appear. I'm not sure where exactly the sound is coming from as it's not possible for me to keep looking at the pedal/crank/gear/cassette while pedalling and trying not to crash into anything... I'm just afraid that I'm straining the chain...

    Interesting,
    I had my seat a bit low recently after replacing my dropper cable - felt it through my knees.
    Also, issue for us long legged folk is slacker seat angles that have us a bit back when the seat is up for seated peddling.
    Lastly, can't recommend enough Absolute Black Oval Chainrings - makes a huge difference in ride survive-ability and ones legs. Not to mention tech climbs are easier with them.

    I usually like to move my legs and feet to pedal.

    Whenever I stand up in the saddle to pedal my chain likes to skip. I've adjusted my gear cables etc, put a bigger chain ring on, new crankset and bottom bracket and still struggle to find a solution. I'm a bigger rider at 6ft 3 and 130kg

      May need a new chain and new rear cassette. A new chain will slip on worn cassette cogs.

    Really found this video helpful, thanks! I do have a question: when I’m pedaling hard uphill in certain gears, the chain will randomly come out of gear.
    This has lead to many near-accidents, and it happens on all my bikes. What is the cause, and what can I do to fix that?

    Last couple of times out I've tried swapping from my normal push each leg down technique ( 1 to 6 as Rich says ) to more of a push over the top starting at 11, 1-6 push then a back drag at the bottom taking me to about 7/8.
    I'm on flats so can't do much more than that but I feel I'm using muscles I wouldn't normally use.
    The result when in the lowest 2 gears and slow flat climbs only feels like a low power Ebike assist.
    It's a short boost for now as I clearly don't use those muscles often so they tire and start to tense/cramp up quickly but it does make me wonder if this is what everyone else who leaves me for dead normally is doing all the time and I just need to train up for it more.
    An oval chainring has made a difference but I fitted it near the start of lockdown 1 and my fitness improved dramatically so which is which I couldn't say.
    However I do find that it "gears up" just as you're wanting power to get over things sometimes so I am stalling out more.
    It can also gear down just as you're finishing your stroke resulting in more late stroke wheelspin in mud when just cruising, also if you didn't stall out on that tree root bumping up you'll now spin out on it as it gears down.
