Once again the best edited, most human, real, vivid, and even charming vlog of any trail anywhere. I'll be with you every step, for the third time!
Lainey M Thank you!!
Same here! You’re the best, Dixie!
Subs jumped 22K in one day! I've been following you for 3 years. You were my first backpacking channel! Congrats on this endeavor. Godspeed!
Jim Sullivan Haha, I’m not sure it was that much, but thank you so much!
Jim Sullivan
She was my first backpacking channel as well, & she actually inspired me to try small section hikes. I love Day hikes, but I’ve never done anything overnight. I’m planing my first one this spring or fall. I never thought I’d be able to do something like this, but the more I watched her videos the more inspired I got to at least try it. I can’t afford to take off work for a thru-hike, but I will do a little three-five day section. Think I’ll start very small, & just plan two-three days. I live in SE TN, & absolutely love this area for hiking, & outdoors stuff. One day I’ll venture further out b/c there’s so much more to see, & experience, but for now while learning I’ll stay around here.
She's also my first. I'm disabled and due to about 12 years of surgeries and illness, I've been stuck indoors through all of it.
A few years ago I started watching bushcraft and camping videos because I used to go camping almost every weekend. I also started practicing yoga in the hopes of alleviating a lot of the pain I deal with. One of the best and unexpected side effects is that I've slowly been getting stronger as well. My first camping trip in 12 years is in less than 2 weeks! There's a 1.1m hike to my campsite as well so this will be my first backpacking experience as well! I am SO excited!
My ultimate goal is to do the AT in 2020. I have no idea if I'll be able to do it, but that's what I'm working towards.
Bout time I get to live vicariously through you again!
Forget a gear sponsor, Snickers needs to get on board..
You and Perk are old hands at this. Praying the greenhorn gets better and finds his stride so he can finish with you guys. Thanks for making my summers in an office with no windows enjoyable. Peace and Love
I'm so excited! I met a fellow Homemade Wanderlust fan this weekend on my very first solo overnight backpacking trip. You're so inspiring Dixie!
Cory Mills Oh that’s so cool! Congrats on your first trip!!
You’re the only person I know that can make walking through a desolate New Mexico desert look good. God bless and may you enjoy minute and every mile.
That was so good! Only 168 hours until the next video. :-). I joined the CDT organization because of Dixie and Perk and Aaron's hike and $35 will purchase 7 trail markers to help out future hikers. A good deal!
Karen W ... okay, I’m in! 😁
I will do that
WOW! Thank you so much! For a trail that is less traveled that really goes a long way. That’s so sweet of you.
I am in... thanks for sharing that info - totally inspired by both Dixie and Perk's adventures, and Aaron doing his first through hike on the CDT, what champ!!!
What a great idea!
would you ever consider leading a hikers trip and teach backpacking skills??? I would love that because I would feel more comfortable doing an overnight with a group before i adventure on my own. Thanks for sharing your journey! I love every series. I hope you continue to hike after the trilogy is over. I feel as sad as when the third book of fifty shades was over lmao
look for local meetup.com hiking groups, a lot of them would do beginner backpacking that does a series of training hikes then onto a "graduation" weekend backpacking trip. Also outfitters like REI have beginner backpacking courses that takes you through the basics. Or honestly... find some backpacker friends and ask them for advise and just follow them out on a trip or 2. Most backpackers have more than enough gear to lend and you may learn that backpacking is not for you before you invest hundreds/thousands of dollars on gear. But fair warning, once you see the scenery and vistas achievable through backpacking, you may get addicted and wonder off into the wilderness wanting to leave your life behind.
Another name to add to Chih-Wei Chuang's great suggestions is Tremont Institute in east Tennessee! I'd hiked for a long time, but 10 years ago had my first real backpacking experience on a women's camping weekend they sponsored and learned a lot. Highly recommend it if you're anywhere nearby. gsmit.org/
LILIANA SURIEL not sure where you live, but if you’re in the L.A. area there’s a couple of easy beginner hikes to relativity having a park ranger patrol the camp ground at night. Google: Henninger Flats and Hoegee Campground. Both are easy 1-2 milers hike into camp. That’s how I started. You’ll learn by trial and error what to pack and what not to pack as you keep going, eventually you’ll be comfortable and find a groove to stay out longer than a day, then two or three or four days out. Main thing have fun and don’t be scared of the wilderness just respect it. Cheers!
REI has a bunch of backpacking trips and classes!
LILIANA SURIEL Potentially someday! I will definitely be doing more trips after the CDT :) Like many others mentioned, check local groups, outfitters, etc. for groups that adventure together. I bet there is one near you. Thank you so much for watching and for the support and I’m glad to hear you are thinking about getting out on trail yourself!
You are the gift that keeps on giving... hope your mum and dad are proud of you.
Wow! First backpacking trip and he takes on the CDT. I like his confidence. I have purposely held off on watching any other CDT videos because I wanted to experience it with you first. This is awesome!
James WilderHancock Awww, thanks James!
And just now got caught up with you today on the HRN podcast. Hope Reserve is treating you well. I must say you have set the standard for me for thru-hiking. Love your purist ethic.
I've spent the last week or two binging your AT and PCT thru hikes. Now starting this one. Thanks for the entertainment during my lunch break.
A proper gentleman hiking through the desert with a tie around his neck.
That beard is so gross though...
Well done Dixie on setting off. We are all with you on your journey. Glad you found your tent pegs! Sure you will get into the swing of it all again, you're just working out the kinks. Take care, happy trails!
YES IM SO EXCITED HELL YEAH BOI
Dixie, an awesome start to what is bound to be an awesome hike. Best hiking channel on the 'tube by far!
Great video as always.
I noticed Aaron was smiling even though he wasn't feeling good. That is a good sign, he might make it. I'm pulling for him.
Just found her videos a couple of months ago and binged all of them, can't believe I'm going to get to watch this one from the beginning. I can already tell I'm gonna get cranky waiting for new episodes though
I cant wait to follow your journey. You are amazing and truly inspiring. As an avid hiker, every time i watch your videos i want to drop everything and go hike now lol. I cant imagine how many people, especially woman you have inspired to do a thru hike or simply get out there and start hiking. The way your videos portray hiking is so real, honest, fun, and motivating. GOOD LUCK DIXIE, we are all rooting for you!!
So good to see you back on the trail again. You and Darwin are great inspirations for me. I will be doing my first through hike this year (Tahoe Rim Trail) followed by the PCT in 2019. Thank you for all the joy your videos have given me. Oh, by the way, I will be 74 years old in Sept. My philosophy has become, "If you don't try, you'll never know."
Hey, My show's back on! Nice
You go girl. I am pulling for you. I will be watching and looking forward to every Wednesday from now on. Happy for you. Be safe and enjoy.
*I Still Have to Wait Before I Can Watch* I love to binge watch Dixie's videos 3 or 4 at at time. So whilst you lot are enjoying this, I still have to wait a couple of weeks 😪
Johnny Debt hang in there. I think I’m gonna start doing that
It is well worth doing it that way!! Nice comfy chair, a drink and a few snacks.......... then I binge watch and feel Dixie's pain!
Just loop episodes and keep watching them until the next one pops up!!!
Video production keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to follow along this summer.
I make my COMPLETE list of absolutely everything I’m taking based on my “plan” and do a thorough check-off. I’m totally prone to forget something like tent stakes. Glad you found them. 😎
Pulling for all you guys. Thanks for taking us along Dixie.
Let me take a moment to say that I’ve waited for this video for five-ever (that’s longer than forever) beeeecause girl I am SO proud of you! Yes I admit I scoffed a bit and was like man. That guy didn’t know who she is after joining this page on fb.. but golly G I hope he takes the time to see your journey and gets as amazed as the rest of us! You’re doing it!! The last of the triple crown!! Please be as proud of yourself as we are you!! Lots of love! Eat those snickers!! Enjoy every breath taking view. Girl you rock!!! ♥️ you have inspired me. I will get out there one day. I’m in the gym working on my body (I had heart failure in my 20s and am just now working on making sure I can get out there and really do what I want!) and man.. when I made my own fire the other night I was like psh. Look at me. I can do anything. We gotta build each other up, Yano? And you do just that with your wonderful spirit. Hike on, girl!!
Elle Tyree Listen to you! Go girl. So glad to hear you aren’t letting that hold you back and you are facing it head on. Thank you for cheering me on. Happy Trails! 😃💕
WOW! Aaron's first backpacking trip and he's doing a through hike. Look forward to following your journeys and adventures!
HELL YEAH! Let the journey begin.
Dixie and Perk are back!! Best of luck. Aaron thank you for all the awesome videos.
I can’t wait to start my through hikes. I’ll probably start with the at. I went to Philmont 2 years ago and the only way I can describe an experience like that is that it’s like the hotel california: you can check out but you can never leave, and I for one will never be able to leave the trail.
finally, far better than anything on normal tv, have a good hike, wonder what you have planned for next year. please don't stop plenty of the world has amazing hikes.
Beautiful footage
Good luck to brave Aaron. Good to see Dixie, Perk and now Aaron on a new adventure.
You completely made me realize as a single woman that I do not need to wait to have some man or listen to all the people tell me I can’t...to go backpacking. Thank you so much for that!! Changed my life😊
You needed this to help you realize that?
Kevin Martin I am referring to her first thru hike on the AT doing it by herself with zero backpacking experience. She understands what I mean!
That is awesome! Go For It!
Aww, I’m so glad to hear that! You go girl-don’t let anything hold you back 💕
Dan-You look like a dead fish. Why do people like you lurk around Vlogs to put down people who are simply trying to thank someone for a positive influence in their life? Jeeze!-Roadrashray
Between your narration and Aaron's editing skills these are hands down the best hiker videos! You guys could have a Netflix series they are so good!
It's great to have these to look forward to. Best of luck to all three of you. But as for your photog skills--I still think that picture you took of the white spider enclosing the mosquito is one of the best shots I've ever seen!
phronsiekeys Thank you! I was SO excited when I got that. Like, thrilled! I’m glad you appreciate it :)
That sounds awesome and if it was on the PCT I totally missed it as I followed her every step of that incredible trek. If the AT I havn't watched yet. Please give me the vid and time stop so I can see it. Thanks-Roadrashray
Sorry, it was PCT but I have no idea which video.
RoadRashRay and phronsiekeys: Just looked it up because I thought that she had included it in her almost 2 hour recap video of the PCT hike. It starts at 1:02:58. Look for her Pacific Crest Trail Documentary - A Year of Ice and Fire. Posted April 4, 2018. Wrap up of her hike and it's an awesome recap. All the best times and scenery in a 2 hour video. Sums up her whole hike and nicely done, too.
P.S. I've spent a few hours photographing (not videoing, though) crab spiders and have never seen one catch an insect yet. Probably a testament to the sheer number of mosquitoes around at that time. Glad to see the tables turned on it and to have it finally know what it feels like to have something suck the blood out of you -- ha ha !
Native New Mexican here... The Chihuahua Desert is by far some of the most desolate geography you will find in the US. But there is a lot of wildlife there, you just have to find it. Once you get to Silver City the landscape is going to change dramatically and so will the weather. I heard you mention Lordsburg, be careful girl! Bunch of damn crazy people live there. Silver City is a big hippy town and is pretty amazing so I think that'll be a real treat for you. I was in Las Cruces when you drove through and would've loved to take you guys out to dinner and shown you around.
+Homemade Wanderlust Assuming all is well, you're probably close to half-way through NM by now. Hope Aaron (?) got to feeling better. What an adventure. Kind of gives one a picture of what folks had to deal with 150 years ago in that beautiful but unforgiving land. Best wishes, and Happy Trails.
Yea!!!! Dixie is back. I am so excited to see your next adventure.
Well done Dixie 100000 subs!!👍🤩
I hadn't noticed the 100,000 mark! I can only see it getting bigger as she "keeps on trekking"
Dave Nelson yeah the only way for Dixie is up!👍
As a South Carolina Southerner I love hearing your Alabama southern accent, especially when you say "hike". Love your videos.
Best of luck, embrace the suck and enjoy the up and downs of your through hike.....Triple Crown 👑 Awesome!! You Rock “Last thought after watching” should someone bring a small pair of Binoculars for CDT....Can’t wait for your thoughts in comparison for items to bring.
When I first heard "can't see the next post" comment, that was my exact thought Michael!
Dixie and perk back on the trail good luck guys can’t wait to see the journey
And so it begins......
Best of luck to all of you! I look forward to watching you on another Thru-hike!
Your can always do the North Country Trail too!
We might be on a little section of the NCT in MI this weekend! Can't wait!
He
So excited that you guys are starting this and sharing it with us all!!!!!!!!
Hey yea....When hiking in New Mexico ....water.......water.....water......ive lived here for years....even 10 min hike....WATER....
convection sucks......welcome to New mexico.
Hey Dixie! Great to see you out on the trail. And in the best way possible we got to see the real vulnerable Dixie! Glad you found your stakes! 😎 Yes the New Mexico Desert is an unworldly place until you get to see it’s real beauty. And in true form, you have. I know you’re way up the trail by now and I pray always that you have a great and safe journey. Happy Trails!
Dixie.....Dixie......Dixie......Dixie.....you got this girl🙌💖😀
So excited to come with you digitally while you get your triple crown!! I found your channel right after you finished the AT and I watched that whole series in a few days, and I watched your PCT hike religiously every time a new video came out.
Bienvenidos . . . Welcome to the land of Horns, thorns, fangs, & stingers . . . Where everything can hurt ya’ . . . And the friggin’ wind blows till your crazy . . . Buena suerte . . . !
Glad perk and Aaron are with you hope he gets better soon too. Stay safe
I would be afraid of the snakes and all the wildlife, u are brave
I will lose sleep tonight after seeing that jack rabbit...
Dixie, it's so great to see you on trail again! You are awesome to watch! AND, I didn't think Perk actually talked much, but now it's fun to hear his input as well. I'm excited for you all and really appreciate you sharing your experiences with us. Hike safely and blessings to you all on this journey...
GUYS SHUT UP ITS STARTING
So well done. Love the editing and the new camera angles from Aaron and the drone. Really looking forward to the weekly videos.
That was at least a couple of hours too short. They end too soon.
This is why it is a good idea to do a dry run with all your gear at least two days before you start so that if you are missing something you can go get it, and that when you pack up in the morning you leave, you know that you have everything in the pack that you need. And you know where you put it once you hit the trail! Dry run two days before! Woo hoo! You are starting! Im so excited too!
The journey has begun along with me riding shotgun. #goteamdixie2018
I couldn't get home fast enough to watch this! Hope Aaron makes it on the journey with you. Looking forward to the next one!
14:30 a rare female jackelope
Someone else who noticed. Nice! Ubuntu!!
Great start guys! I think everyone who has spent much time hiking, camping or adventuring in wild country with limited water and other amenities can relate to the "crab crawl" or the "midnight exit".... Looking forward to the next vid.
9:26 There she goes shamelessly plugging the “compactor bags” again........
So wonderful to be looking forward to your vids again. Have the time of your life with your good friends out there.
look its Daisy Gump
Thank you for feeding my soul with your wonderful adventures and feeding my desire to have my own adventures xxxx happy trails! Much Love
You oughta make Guthooks refund your gas money.

YES!!!! Dixie’s back on the trail!!!!
I luved every video when you hiked the PCT. Sooooo whoot whooo!! Excited to follow you & your best buds hiking/tenting adventures again here on the CDT!!
Horse with no name. The very first song on the radio that I recall as a very young child.
Woot woot! You go, girl! Best of luck to you snd your hiking parters. We're behind you all the way!
WOW. Followed your pct hike because I loved the insight and portrayal of the the hike but this video quality has taken the experience to another level!
I just started watching your videos a couple week's ago and I so glad I found them. Thank you and please keep them coming.
Omg, I literally was choking back tears watching the end of this!
So happy to be following your journey yet again. Bit of a rough start getting in your groove but you got this! I love following and will be looking foward to every video! Stay safe you all.
Jess! Holy hell! You're doing it! You're ARE going to be a triple crown! So stoked for you!
All the best to you guys on your journey. Quite a hike for anyone, let alone a first time back packer.
Best produced hiking video ever! Charm, personality, warmth and scenery. Thank you.
Desert hiking is tough. Stay hydrated. I’ve done some brutal hikes in Nevada, Utah, miscalculated some maps, and not carrying enough water, boulder scrambling, rocky terrain. Southwest desert is some brutal country hot in day, freezing at night. Just carry as much water as you can. Have fun and safe hiking! 🤙
Ohhh - The dreaded pit in stomach over forgotten tent parts! In my case, I had neglected to make sure the poles of our three person tent were in the sack before leaving home - They weren't, as we found out at the first campsite - But fortunately that was a canoe trip in N.Minnesota, so there were plenty of overhanging tree limbs above tent sites to suspend the tent roof from, to create a cozy cave. Glad your stakes were really with you!
Best Setup ever Starting with good Friends! Canˋt wait for your next Video!! Love the mixture of Nature, Storys, views and sharing EXPERIENCEs about hiking...keep Up the good work
Great vlog and wish you much trail magic along the CDT. My wife and I are planning our first section hike and have learned much from your vlogs. Thank you for all the information you provide. We look forward to putting it into practice.
I just finished AzT May first. Laughing and crying at your first CDT video. Much love and support to you and your fellow hikers!
Hi! We've just discovered your channel thanks to Marie, a german girl you hiked with last year or 2 years ago. We are currently thru-hiking Southern Europe from Portugal to Turkey, an incredible 2-year-journey and Marie joined us for some days in Switzerland.
It's nice to get some insights from a hiking girl form the other side of the planet!! :D
This makes me want to learn how to hike and prepare properly. Thank you for sharing your adventure and journey. Im going to look into grouping with other experienced hikers on shorter trails....All the Best in all your endevors!
LOVED this video and I am ready for this journey with you! Have a blast and I hope Aaron is doing better.
Awesome, more living vicariously via your posts. Cant wait for the next post, ...have fun!
I appreciate the candor and the non-attempt to cover-up the foibles of life! Great series!
I have something to look forward to each week again
Glad to hear you are back on the trail. Happy Hiking 🍾🎉🍾🎉🍾
Love this. I think we heard more words from Professor P. in this video than all others combined. This video edit is a strong start to your CDT adventure, keep up the good work!
Cool start love Perk's tie you guys are going to be awesome on this journey and your friend is in good hands. Dixie just because your on the last leg of the triple there is no need to be sad when it is done there are more trails in the country to hike
Great to see you all on the trail again Dixie. I am sure you already know this but the best way to fix the inside-outy umbrella is to turn it into the wind. Fair winds dear girl. Looking forward to the journey.
It was nice meeting you guys on the CDT! I will have to check out the rest of your videos. Not the prettiest part of this desert, but I've hiked through this area and found lots of artifacts that gave a glimpse of the history of the area. Impressive filming!
"Horse With no Name" was the #1 song on the day I was born. glad we have more trail vids. Godspeed to the three of you.
WooHOO, Dixie! And God bless the Tramily. Been Jonesin' for more of your videos...just what I needed to brighten my mood right now!
