Living with a child who has Down syndrome and multiple medical comorbidities brings a unique set of challenges, but it's a journey filled with deep love and remarkable strength. My daughter, Tahsina Akter, has been a fighter since day one. Tahsina's medical journey has been complex. She underwent cardiac surgery at four years old. As she grew, her spinal curvature worsened significantly, eventually presenting a near 120-degree deformity. This severe curvature led to cost-iliac impingement, which reduced the space in her abdominal cavity, affecting her growth and overall health.
Understanding the complexities and risks of her condition, we made the critical decision to proceed with definitive fusion surgery. Given her history of cardiac issues and the potential for significant blood loss, she was considered a high-risk patient. Despite these challenges, the surgery improved her quality of life.
The surgery, performed by Prof. Arun Ranganathan and his team, was challenging, given Ms Tahsina's delicate condition. The team focused teams on minimizing the risks while aiming for the best possible outcome. The results were nothing short of remarkable. The improvement in the distance between her ribs and hip (costo-iliac distance) was significant, enhancing her physical appearance and, more importantly, alleviating many of her health challenges.
As a mother, witnessing your child undergo such complex medical procedures is incredibly daunting. However, the skill, care, and compassion demonstrated by Prof. Ranganathan and his team at Narayana Health City brought us hope and a successful outcome.
