I wonder if it was something discussed with her race team before the start or if it was entirely her initiative, either way it's heroic cycling at its finest. Somehow, this reminds me of 2018 Giro d'Italia's stage 19, where Froome went solo to win the stage and the Giro. Perfect fueling strategy with some kind of disagreement on how to proceed by the competitors and an overall hard-selective loop.
It was planned that the dutchies would set a hard tempo on the climb. When Annemiek VV had a gap, teammate Anna VdB wouldn't close that, and then Annemiek's plan was to hold on for as long as possible, putting her teammates out of the chase, only in the last 15km did she really believe that she could win.
