- Staten Island is the least populated borough in New York City, but did you know that it has one of the largest Sri Lankan populations outside of the country of Sri Lanka? Nearly 5,000 Sri Lankan Americans have settled there since the late 1950’s. Walk through the Tompkinsville and St. George neighborhoods and you’ll experience “Little Sri Lanka”, with restaurants, stores, and the very first Sri Lankan art museum.
Asian American Life correspondent Rayner Ramirez meets the original Sri Lankan family that settled in Staten Island and takes us on a tour of the rich community that blossomed there. - Кино
Juliya, you are doing great. You are good example to most of the Sri Lakans. Really admire and thank you for everything you've done. Wish you all the happiness and success!

Going to visit Sri Lanka next February again! Love the country, the culture and the food!
Love from sri Lanka 😍
You are welcome ❤
Your most welcome. !
You weren't actually able to visit this Feb. Were you? If you did. I hope that you're okay. I mean since the pandemic
@@smp_h Actually we were! We just made it back a week before Sri Lanka closed the border! We had a wonderful time and could see old friends and more of the wonderful country. This time we went from Colombo to Kandy (by Train), then to Anuradapura, Wilpattu National Park and Kalpitiya. We also managed to fly to the Maledives the first time for a few days. We hope the pandemie gets under control soon, we still have to explore a lot!
You done the great job.Sri Lanka is my beautiful mother land.
OMG! This is the first time I heard something like this. Love Sri Lanka!
Love this Country and the people. Wanna visit again 💚
🙏🇱🇰
I accidentally came across this documentary which I thought was unique to most of you, who visited the big apple (NYC), but never knew that a part of Sri Lanka and its culture dwells at it's door steps.
I am very pleased with Julia who is playing a very prominent role to promote Sri Lanka and its unique Culture in Staten Island, NYC. I saw this young lady when she was around 8 years, and noticed her talented strong character at that young age. Her father Ruwan Wijesinghe , is one of my close childhood friends in the same village schooled together with me, running the best Sri Lankan restaurant in the whole world out side of Sri Lanka (in my humble opinion). I still remember the best "Kotthuwa" I ever enjoyed at his "Lak Ruwana" restaurant in Staten Island almost a decade ago. Don't forget to pay a visit to the Staten Island which is a short ferry ride from Manhattan, when you visit NYC next time and to visit Julia's Sri Lankan cultural museum . Highly recommend to enjoy a classic Sri Lankan meal at "Lak Ruwana" too!
We came to the U.S. from Sri Lanka in July 1984. We have lived in Grand Rapids, MI, Clayton N.Y. and are currently living in. Syracuse N.Y. There are very few former Sri Lankans like us in this part of the country.
Would like to connect with former Sri Lankans in Staten Island. We visited Sri Lanka last in September 2019 together with 14 Australians on a 9 day tour of the country. Would like to visit again after the pandemic is over.
All the very best for your future🙏
We, Staten Island, also have a Tibetan museum, of course lots of cultures.... Italian, Greek, Irish, Ukrainian, we offer so much and are close to the noisy city for work.
I visited Staten Island several times when I was in NYC, the tasty food at New Asha restaurant with the wonderful Sri Lankan hospitality of the host was unforgettable!
I lived right across from the restaurant. I live in Staten Island... "the forgotten burrough"... not so forgotten nowadays and unfortunately being taken over by trendy people from NYC and Brooklyn. Hoping it doesn't lose its singular charm and beauty . All our parks, wildlife and gorgeous homes... nice beaches too!
Wow! I’m a Sri Lankan on native soil. What an achievement. Having a cultural museum. Amazing stuff.
Hi 🙋🏽♂️ mate 😌😌😌
@Jack Mills Yes I have. That may have happened with the government and forces. The stories are horrible. As a Sinhalese I personally do not accept any of that. Now relationships are building up with Tamils and Sinhalese which are strong. Tamils are so wonderful as a community. Now politicians from both sides are trying their best to separate us.
It's okay for you to criticize our government. We do it all the time. But don't blame on the beautiful island and the wonderful people.
Proud to be a sri lankan.you done great work sister.
i heard sri lanka people are very nice people
Yes it's true..
For the most part... Unless you run into the racists.
Not really...they will treat outsiders nicely, but ' hate each other..
Yeah, only to outsiders
Absolutely true they are absolutely sweet with outsiders or foreigners....but they have problems with their own sri lankan community....sri lankans only have sri lankan enemies...that's etched in their DNA 🤣
ශ්රී ලංකාවට ආඩම්බරයක් 👌🇱🇰

Julia, I am very proud of you. That museum is exquisite. As a US citizen from India I like it so much when people make effort to save subcontinental heritage.
Thank you for valuing my country. Feel proud I did not leave my sacred motherland.
Congratulations Juliya Wijesinghe.
Wish you greater success in your efforts to promote our island nation Sri Lanka

The possibility there Even if all the 5000 people on the island had come together to rebuild Sri Lanka from the current situation. I wish a day like that would come.
Im Sri lankan proud to hear 👍🙏
Great job julia..we are proud of you❤
Congratulations and wish you all the best 🙏
What an inspiration, a great achievement to build a museum to acknowledge & place Sri Lanka on the map. Sister, it brings tears of joy to see the length that you have gone to ensure that Sri Lanka is known to people all over the world. I am proud of you.
Whichever places Indians go, Indians from all over the world, they certainly progress. This is just one of the many examples. It's in our genes, it's in our culture to progress.
I wish all my brothers and sisters of Sri Lanka on the island all the best in their endeavours to progress to new heights beyond limitation.
Bravo!!! So proud of you!!! way to g girl! Love from Scotland!!! :*

It is a great example for the people who live in Sri Lanka. Each city of Sri Lanka should have a museum in my opinoin. Generally, Sri Lankans do not have an appreciation of their heritage except for very old places like Anuradhapura. Most Sri Lankan folk's dances. toys and play are now extinct in the island.
I usually pass through SI and didn't know this, wow.
Very cool sis, all the best from Aus. We also can relate..
How can I contact the founder of this channel. I have not found anything here. If anyone can help I would appreciate that. I have many questions to ask that I believe would be best answered in a non-public communique. Thank you for your help. - Johnny
Great work, congratulation, you took a lot of effort to show case your country in the US

Sri Lanka is a very beautiful country. Just ignore some of the negatives in the country... They are minor incidents!
How minor???
@@davidtissera3600 To the point you can equate it to the safety of countries like America and France. They have their hate-filled incidents but you're about 95% safe from it
Srilanka is messed up 🤣 specially with the new president...shit is gonna go down..its a Chinese colony now 😄
@@davidtissera3600 minor enough that the locals forget it themselves. We have much more pressing issues like the cost of living itself.

Just out of curiosity, what is the difference between Indian culture and Sri Lankan culture?
You should better find the right sources to find the real differences between SL and India. There is a huge history in SL than what is written thereon papers. But you can also rely on Wikipedia but just to let you know that coming to SL will give you the finest clues to your question. Sometimes it is unbelievable how old is SL heritage when referring to real sources. And being simple for your question, SL has a totally different culture from India. As it is situated under the southern part of India there are a lot of Indian immigrants in Nothern of SL. So they also have created their own culture apart from the Sri Lankan Sinhalese culture. That is the reason why some foreigners misunderstand the different between SL and India.
It's pretty different. We're Buddhist, they're Hindus. Our language is very different from theirs as it is native to the island, and we just have a different culture overall cause we were colonized way before them.
In short, Sri Lankan culture is revolving around Buddhist principles thus people are more disciplined, generous, kind, tolerant, generous and open minded. The vibe is more relaxed and clam in Sri Lanka and the streets are cleaner. We have our own spice varieties and the taste is different to those of Indian.
There is big difference
Well sri Lankan tamils and indian tamils are very similar kind of mixed malayalam cultures as well but sinhalese it's very different everything including the dress, food language religion etc.....
um um
we need more ambassadors to promote my country through out the world?
Send some radical budhist monks 🤣
Radicalism and Buddhism doesnt belong in the same sentence@@jdave209
@@firstconsul001 unfortunately Sri Lanka is ruined by Buddhism and monks , worst part is that , most of the Sri LOANkans are still modayos
In 437 Years before christ there was a big Greek population in anuradhapura.so we have now started going to other countries
I had no idea. That's incredible.
💜😃👍

Can you all be happy about the present situation of your Mother Land..?
Difficult to understand if they like their culture and miss their homeland so much why immigrate in the first place time to go back for good perhaps.
Ha ha ha..... are you drunk my mate?
If you have the capabilities to go abroad you will be able to earn way more money working in Western countries than staying in SL.
My family moved to France just for better economical opportunities, they worked their asses off for 30 years, earned and saved enough and now they went back to SL just 4 years ago.
I was born and raised in France, and still studying here, and just for the comparison, when i take a small job for students i get around 1600€ per month while my cousin in SL that has the same age as me would get 150€ per month for a small job in a bank.
@@sinhalalion1806 Damn that's good I'm happy for your family bro (nice to see you again too lol)
are you high on opium
