  • Baixa Pombalina, also known simply as Baixa, is the downtown area of Lisbon. It was rebuilt in the late 18th century after the devastating 1755 earthquake, following the Pombaline style of architecture developed by Marquis of Pombal, the prime minister of Portugal at the time. The area is characterized by grid-like streets, neoclassical buildings, and a planned layout. Some notable landmarks in Baixa include the Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square), the Rossio Square, and the Santa Justa Lift.
Alfama, on the other hand, is one of the oldest districts in Lisbon and is known for its narrow winding streets and historic architecture. It survived the 1755 earthquake, retaining its medieval layout. Alfama is situated on the slopes between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus River. The area is famous for its traditional Fado houses, and it offers stunning views of the city from various viewpoints.
Both Baixa Pombalina and Alfama are popular among tourists for their historical significance, charming atmosphere, and cultural attractions. Each area has its unique character, offering a blend of history, architecture, and local flavor for visitors to explore.
