Tier 3 College or Drop after JEE Mains?

This video is meant for those students who did not perform well in JEE Mains. Such students may opt to go to some college choosing whatever department is available or go for a drop year.
For a change, I have discussed the main points in Hindi in this video. This has been a long-standing request from many students.
Here, I try to dispel some wrong notions that students may have. One of the most important points I emphasize on is that students should try to avoid going to some random Tier 3 college. However, if the situation is such that there is no other option other than going to a Tier 3 college, then they should avoid going to certain departments in these types of colleges. The Departments are Mechanical, Civil etc. ... basically the hard core engineering branches. I discuss the reasons behind this at some length.
I also discuss the option of dropping. Students should introspect really well before making this decision. They should try to find out for real where they truly stand in terms of their academic preparation. And, instead of listening to random pieces of advice, they should first try to identify very specifically their own shortcomings because it is only then that they can work on those shortcomings. Just a general plan to "work hard" is not no plan at all!

I did BTech agri engineering from a well known university, then I joined IIT KGP to pursue MTech in Water resources, got a silver medal, now I am pursuing PhD in Civil Eng at University of Notre Dame, USA. I totally agree with your points sir because I faced this during phd course when I took Advanced Fluid Dynamics course and I felt it to be really difficult may be because my basics were not that strong. But what I really want to point out that it depends on the student as well, one can get success even being a graduate holder from a third tier institution. My undergrad University was not one of the top most prestigious universities though I performed well in masters & whatever I am doing right now, I am happy with that. According to me subject doesn’t matter at all. But I could be totally wrong sir. Thanks

Sir do you think Direct PhD after BTech is worth at 26 age with work ex.??? Is there any drawbacks compared to normal MTech and then PhD??? I heard IITs discriminate direct phds during faculty selection process , is it true???

All do not have patience like you have after studying four years - no job, aarre chalo kar lete hyay MTech. After studying two years Mtech no job, chalo Bhai PhD kar lete hyay. After 5 years PhD no job, chalo ek post doc hi kar lete hyay. So 4+2+5= 11 years studying and no job guarantee. Who wants to go to such trajectory? Better is go for BTech, then go to a job. You will have hands on industry experience and deal with problems which actually matters in real life. Not like PhD where most of the times the problem you deal with are just academic questions which will never ever be used in real life.

Finally, you addressed the major factor - " Mechanical is easy". I mean everyone thinks that we hold spanners, and tighten nuts and bolts. The amount of rigor involved is astounding.
Also, I think core engineering subjects cannot be taught online, It needs upgradation every semester.
The majority of things are not at the undergrad level, they are just diluted. The real thing is way more complicated. (I think so)

The generation of students watching you and learning from you is extremely fortunate. Loved your video, especially the last part where you stress the importance of doing what's good for the family. Most profs love their own field with a bias and are not ready to accept the job-market today. You understand the job market and advice accordingly. I think that makes you not just a great teacher(I love your mechanics of solids lectures), but as well as a true well-wisher of students.

As always very balanced presentation and the timing of the presentation so apt when so many students are on the verge of making their career choices. You are right in your point that for one to choose core engineering like civil or mechanical, one needs to look at both the facilities and faculty. You are absolutely on the spot when you say that there are certain things which cannot be understood unless experienced in person. I remember when I was studying, my father also being a civil engineer, used to take me to site to explain things. That made a huge difference.

I don’t know if you’ll ever read this but thank you so much sir, I have never heard such unique opinions about learning math, coaching, mechanical engineering ofc and finally taking a drop. I think I watched these videos in a very systematic way completely aligning with my journey! I will be taking a drop certainly even though my result couldn’t have been worse I never understood physics and match the following though interesting to learn at coaching never helped excel math! But this year I will study just like I used to in 10th grade and it reminds me why I chose pcm in the first place and even if I don’t crack iit I want to really feel physics and math and make an informed decision!
Thankfully I do have supportive parents and some other favourable conditions

Respected sir, I would like to seek your opinion on the relevance of pursuing an MTech degree after completing a BTech, particularly for individuals aiming for a PhD. Allow me to provide some context regarding my situation. I graduated from a fairly reputable engineering college, although not in the "so-called" top tier, and I also have a published paper to my credit. Currently, I am employed but have a keen interest in pursuing a PhD, preferably within my own country. However, I am unsure whether obtaining an MTech is a necessary step before pursuing a PhD. I have come across discussions suggesting that direct PhD candidates may face discrimination during the faculty selection process at IITs, where individuals with both an MTech and a PhD are typically preferred. I am curious to know if there is any truth to this claim. Additionally, considering my age, which is on the higher side at 26, the 2year duration of an MTech program would further delay my pursuit of a PhD, potentially impacting the selection process negatively.

Also sometimes teaching is worse in government institutes as profs. have a govt.job (I have first hand experience of working in a CFTI on contractual basis)..? The CFTIs would only generate like 5-10k core lets say mech. engineers per year. Are they sufficient for such big economy or can we have some more..? please let us know...thanks!!

Check NIRF rankings it’s generally consistent …Trichy is like #9 and comes right after top 8 IITs

CS or IT in a well-recognized and established private college may be okay. But please do not take CS or IT in some random private college. Much better to take non-circuital branch in a proper NIT.
