Play any notes together, if it sounds good it is good, then move your hand and play any notes, and if it sounds good with itself, and with the earlier position, it is good. Thing is, as you add a second position, the number of notes that will sound good with themselves, and with the prior position seriously diminishes to the point where you're walking through a minefield, and the whole field is mines, with just a few spots that won't blow your legs off, so to speak. Do I need this video then? Like you've shown two positions that work together nicely, and each of those positions have little modifications that can extend them, which is awesome. But what can I do with this knowledge, that is any different than my (lack of) knowledge before watching this video. Before I was just putting my fingers down, trying to find fingerings that sound good, then trying to randomly find another position that also works with itself and the first position. This way kind of sucks, as you'll spend an eternity trying to find things that work. And then when you do find, omg, two chords that work together... what do you do with it? Without the music theory knowledge, it is very hard to extend that into a full song, it is very hard to figure out a chorus chording that is a progression of the first two chords, but takes the song to a new place. And never mind a finding a good chorus chording, just randomly finding a third chord that even works with the first two, is exponentially harder than finding that second chord that works with the first. Your fingerings/note options progressively diminish... and that is for a one chord chorus. Are you getting me? It sucks to be ignorant. But what you play here sounds great, if a little hackneyed. Maybe I'll try to write a song with these fingerings?
Finally a ‘dissonant guitar sound’ lesson that doesn’t lose itself in talks of modes and unnecessary bullshit. Thank you sir. Well done and well played
@@TheBoglodite yes, fair enough. But theres a lot of players that are looking for tips and a shortcut into playing with these sounds that get intimidated when all the music theory is thrown at them. Dont be a theory elitist.
Completely agree with distancing oneself from theory. You ask me to play a certain chord I might be able to produce 3 or 4. But having taught myself to play I know it's all about finding shapes and patterns that work and finding relevant positions to pop them into. I also never use a top E string. It snapped and I have improvised ever since.
dude... i love your videos... i haven't ever really been excited about video posts....but your music/teaching style is something super ethereal which drives me crazy... in a good way!! Thx keep up the great work.
Awesome channel, just subbed. Although I am very familiar with a lot of the techniques you teach it is just so refreshing to see someone not playing generic riffs or noodling around with the blues constantly. Dissonance/dischordic and slightly off kilter is how I roll.
I find major 7th chords to be pretty nice; it's fun to go back and forth between 5th chords. If you're playing any more than 3 strings, it's not as muddled and sounds more melancholic if you play the chords as an arpeggio. It offers a smoother transition as well IMO. It's fun to work on some chords you know and slightly change them (Most of the time, using your pinky does the trick) to get the melody in there as well. Shoegaze uses a lot of fuzz and delay, but I like to use a flanger as well.
