I'm in CA. Cops won't care about ebikes as long as they're not popping wheelies or going 20+ nearby pedestrians. Heck, I was waiting at a left turn light on my eboard with a sheriff right behind me. Didn't pull me over for it.

I think they are so eager pushing the WEF agenda they really don't care, until of course everyone is on an e.bike,scooter,board. They want you to feel free so you get rid of your car yet then when everybody is carless, thats when they come down hard on us. Best thing to do, don't ask, don't tell, fuck the law.
Never ask a cop about the laws or rights. A majority of them don't know. Ask a lawyer
They should know considering they’re responsible for telling people if they broke it
Right. If you only got paid 18/hr, would you take the time to get the education of a $275/hr lawyer? Remember...lawyers dont get shot at either.

Cops in big cities are too busy dealing with real crimes to even think about having to “enforce” laws against ebikes…also most cops wont know the details of the laws unless you force them to look them up. Cops in smaller quieter communities are the ones you have to worry about. They have more time on their hands. Follow the rules of the road, no sidewalks, don’t be a goon in front of cops and we wont hassle you. 😉👮🏼♂️

Interesting that according to an attorney who has been practicing law for 20+ years where I live, "ignorance of the law isn't an excuse" when dealing to civilians but we literally have the people in charge of public safety proudly and publicly displaying "ignorance of law"

I’ve ridden an Ebike since 2011 and every law enforcement officer I meet has a different version of Ebike laws. There’s something about the “control” factor of the human brain that simply won’t allow many officers to adapt a proper attitude towards learning the exact laws that have been passed. So many of them add their own rules to suit their tastes; and won’t listen to the truth. Besides the SCOTUS has turned them all into lying ass thieves and fines and fees are the only important subject to consider.

I'm in Canada. There's actually pretty strict laws on the ebikes, but most the cops don't know any of the rules. I have an Emmo Zone GTS. The only law most the cops know is that you have to have pedals attached, even though you are required to ride on the street. To be fair, you're only supposed to go about 20mph, but I can easily hit twice that, and then some.
Strict laws? How do you know it was strict? Have you read the actual legislation on ebikes? Can you copy and paste the language? Are you able to provide the said strict laws and grey areas? Any specific penal codes? Law enforcement will take advantages of loose grey area laws and it was designed in a way so law enforcement can punk you. Go whine to your legislatures.
@Depth Charge I ain't whining to no one. I can actually talk about all this things because I live here, ride one, and read the laws on them. If you'd like to know them as well, feel free to look them up. It'll fall under Ontario.

UK is a laughing stock . Illegal to ride your own escooter but you can legally rent one . 250w legal limit. Yet drivers constantly break laws and police do nothing
@@SKBKER That sucks....
@@VoltedAdventures yup and it's why in every street you will see people ignoring the stupid law and riding their own escooters . Seriously the law is clearly unfair and not made with proper research
In my experience, in these areas: being respectful and following the laws of the road make a big difference in who gets a tickets.
one of the things i have seen that police will ticket is riding on the sidewalk at speeds much faster than walking speed. passing pedestrians without warning (always use a bell) will often get a phone call/complaint and quickly result in being pulled over. and this has also been explained to me by law enforcement and pedestrians.
pedestrians do not like being passed without warning of approach. and never passing pedestrians at speeds far greater than any given pedestrians walking speed.
Illegal ebikers are relying on the police being ignorant about the relevant laws. When and if there is a backlash against these bikes due to complaints, accidents, injuries, reckless riders etc., the police will be trained up and won't be so ignorant. If you injure someone while riding an illegal ebike, trust me, that person's lawyer is going to know everything about ebike laws and use those laws against you.
Your voice when you approached the cops changed significantly. Gettin a lil high pitch polite boy tone. Lmao 🤣 🤣 🤣

As a year round cyclist in Chicago it’s so refreshing seeing other cyclist follow laws and traffic!
If you have the money you can do what you want. One thing that can happen to you is if you do piss them off, you will pay for sure. Money gives you a pass on a lot of things. In my town, you can fly past the cops on anything that doesn't need to be plated and they don't even look twice at you. As for gears on an e-bike, some use them and ride to get exercise.
The average cop couldn't tell you what the 1st amendment of the bill of rights protects and that's the most basic and well known rights we as Americans have
So here's my question...Why is there restrictions on the wattage of ebikes but not on electric cars?
Great idea! One thing to note, you installed the folding stem backwards. It should stand closer to straight up instead of being tilted back towards you.
I noticed that as well 🖒
To each their own
That bike isn’t slow at all for those small roads..seems pretty peppy
Its nice to see some cops just straight up say 'I don't know'! Some cops here in Tasmania, Australia have no idea! Even when it comes to cars!!! Got defected once in my Corolla 😂 I upgraded my rear drums to a Twin Cam set of rear discs (along with correct booster) . Because they come off of the same chassis model of Corolla, it doesn't need an engineers certificate... But yes, defected!!! The majority of cops you talked to seemed super chill :-)
Now do this again with the surron 😂
The surron definitely Looks like a dirt bike, but most of these ebikes resemble a hefty bicycle. The surron might receive more pushback
@@raiden72 Completely agree. I’m pretty sure you already know this, but you can buy a crank-kit to swap out the pegs with pedals. So for anyone constantly having commotion with cops, this would be something to look into.

@@johnw65 I’d prefer educated.
How does the law apply to class 3 ebikes that you can adjust to a class 1 or 2 from the controller?
Had my Evercross H5 electric scooter for 3 years (Florida), I ride by cops everyday and always on sidewalk, only going 10-12 mph max (my scooter goes up to 28mph) but being on the sidewalk alone they don't bother me, cop even stopped and gave me the right away at 2am when no one else was around.
I suspect it depends, for example going 10 mph on a crowded sidewalk downtown at busy time they may stop you but if it's an area of town where hardly anyone walks, they look the other way.
NYS is 750 watts maximum and 20mph strictly throttle-no pedal assist. If you’re riding responsibly (staying to the right as much as possible, not impeding traffic, obeying traffic signs and signals, wearing a helmet, staying off the sidewalk, etc) you should be fine. I have passed numerous officers in Long Island (who are usually gung-ho about thier jobs) and because I wasn’t doing anything stupid, they left me alone.
Generally a cop isn’t going to stop you on an ebike unless you’re doing something stupid… Like me going 60 in a 40 zone. Cops also don’t memorize every law that the cities create. But as ebikes become more and more popular, you can bet they will be memorizing these laws more because they are enforcing them more and more.
Ebikes just aren’t under their radar nearly as much as we think.
Generally people on E-bikes are well off people. Well off people are not the type that commit crimes. Poor people do out of desperation/they are poor because they make bad decisions like comiting crimes. Someone on a crappy normal bike is way more likely to draw the attention of a cop.
Legally cops are not allowed to discriminate against people. Bikes/vehicles are not people. So riding around in/on a crappy form of transportation is perfectly legal for them to purposefully target.
@@CrypticCobra That is a terrible generalization. You think a cop is going to focus more on someone riding a bike than someone riding a Surron? Lolwut.

“Cop meeting” that’s the funniest shit I have heard... it’s not even LA my guy 😂
Tbh my experience here in Missouri which is a rural area by comparison obviously is “just stay to the right side of the ride and follow traffic laws, generally as long as you are trying to be safe and we can see that then no one will give you any issues just make sure you have a headlight and a tail lights at night so you don’t get ticketed for that” was what I was told the first night I rode my ebike and met a cop in a parking lot, been riding for two months and haven’t heard any complaints or remarks since, the only thing I’d recommend for those who are going to get those really fast e-bikes that go like 45 and over 100% register it as a moped or motorcycle and just get your permit. I know it seems kinda dumb but it’s for your own safety plus there is no test for a bike permit so just do it.
I personally made a “commuter electric dirt bike” so it only goes 35mph(when in highest gear but I registered it as a moped in case anything happens but because it doesn’t go over the limits I don’t require license

I don't wanna be stuck with a silly 25km/h bike (Those are legal) when I know these way faster (and frankly better) ones excist.
You have to understand that cops, especially in larger cities, have so much more to worry about than some random e-bike laws. At the end of the day, cops ain’t lawyers.
You said legal limit for these bikes is 28 mph, but you hit 40+ in video???
If you keep playing with fire, they are going to make you register your ebike and be road compliant like dirt bikes.
People do not know a watt from a Kilo watt. That is like asking how many grams in a Kilo gram.
back around a few years ago, I bought a small bike (scooter) that I did not need to peddle; - my original bike engine (my legs) turned to flab as well as all other bicycle riding muscles = after a couple of years I suffered my first heart attack = a bike which moves forward without peddling is taking you closer and closer to hospital even if you do not crash...
Best thing a cop can say is "I dont know" or "im not sure" makes them human and shows they might have a little more control over their ego.
LA, Ca E-Bike: helmet must be worn. Obey all traffic laws and don't ride on the sidewalk. All the rules of the road apply to E-bicyclists, too - obey traffic signs, signals, and lane markings. Ride in the bike lane, if one is available. If riding in the street, ride as far to the right as you can.

Honestly, if you have a driver's license, I couldn't care less.
I would be giving away driver's licenses for anything up to 110cc bikes if I was in charge. Any bike is one less car on the road.
Been riding my Sur-Ron in Vegas for over 2 years now and never had any issues at all with PD.
So you were going to tell the police your bike had a 100,000 watt motor, you should have went with 1.21 gigawatts.

Don’t ever ask cops those sorts of questions. Soon they’ll be making people have licenses.
Try that in New Zealand - it will need a license plate and if your pulled over by police they will ask for your drivers license - fail to provide it and they will impound it

Hearing you say you don't have a street legal bike, and knowing how many bikes you have, makes that hilarious
There’s like 12 and 13-year-old kids riding Willys up and down the street where I live and they go out on the main roads and ride their bikes and I don’t think there’s an age limit or any kind of speed limit for an electric bite so that seems like it’s the best way to commute.
I live in MN and its states, on Trails a ebike can only have a 750watt motor and a max speed of 28 with no throttle(Class 3) even tho it then state's that bikes can be class 2 and 3 but must stay within 20mph on trails. This is not even talking about federal law of course were its like 28mph period. My state has no laws about it for road use other then have a front light and back light, and now ur turn signals or have turn signals.
as long as the motor has a cut off at 20mph, it is street legal.. You can of course ride faster but only under your own power.. You must use bike lanes if (they're available and clear of debris or blocks). otherwise you are legally able to take an entire lane just like a car.. Bikes were hear before cars, that grandfathers you into right to use public roads.
yeah well according to the law there are only 2 states that have no watt limit on ebikes: california (LA) and florida
They even know traffic laws. California cops are some of the most under educated on the actual law in the country.
I live at the border with Mexico, South California and the police never tells me anything, or ask me about volts, amps or watts
Either they don't know the law for Ebikes or they don't care
Cops aren’t generally going to be bothered with e-bikes. Unless you are violating traffic laws. If a bike violates a law it’s the same as a vehicle. Even bikes 50cc and under most don’t care. You don’t need a license or registration but if it’s above 50cc than yes. Some jurisdictions are 49cc and below.
I suspect that ebikes will go the same way mopeds did in the late 70s/early 80s. When they came on the market, they took advantage of the current laws, which only required registration and motorcycle license from 50cc upward. It didn't take all that long before the laws were changed to require them all to be registered and motorcycle license required. Ebikes are doing exactly what mopeds did, and it's almost guaranteed that the laws will soon restrict ebikes the same way.
We have E scooters in the UK, now the interesting bIt . Approved city Scooters can be used in public on the road, and privately owned E scooters can't be used other than on private property. That's where it falls down- ------ there are hundreds of private scooters on the roads, on the pavement/ sidewalk, in pedestrian only areas, whizzing about unchecked, knocking, and nearly knocking people over, and not much is done about it. So if cops don't know the laws, or don't care, that's how it remains.
I wish bike riders would follow the rules of the road. I've seen so many blow through stop signs and not use hand signals, etc. They want to share the road yet not follow the rules of the road. Interesting side note, one of my roomates in college was pulled over for speeding through a school zone on a bicycle.
i will never forget this arse of a cop that rolled up beside me and told me he could ticket me for "riding an electric scooter" (that maxed out at 15 mph) when i was a preteen. his tone was just absolutely rude. in a small town with 1,500 people. i didn't cause any trouble, unlike neighbor kids these days that will literally skate right out in front of traffic at full speed from the corner of their house in the driveway or rollerblade behind your car while you're reversing in your driveway.
I get the feeling this guy sleeps with his helmet on.
Your friend really needs some lights. It's super sketchy how impossible he is to see in the dark, and he's zipping around the streets among cars at like 30mph.
not the brand new officer just sitting there confused
Here I asked 5 police on 50cc scooter laws....all got was "I don't know" 🤦
Bros outfit matches his truck
Wow, wish it was like that in Canada. Here you can only go 32 km/h :(
I’ve had officers behind me on my E-Scooter going 40mph and they’re fine, I keep to the right on the back roads so people can pass me if they want.
When you consider the avg speed at the Tour de France is 22mph, 28mph on an ebike is more than enough unless you have a strong need to get to a hospital.
E-Bikes are necessarily new and most officers are not educated on laws based on Electric Scooters, Electric Bikes, and basically any electric motorized vehicles, thats why most Officers tends to not interact with them otherwise if they see another crime being committed, like not wearing the proper gear, or following proper traffic law. And when asked some of them don't neccesairely answer, remember, Motorized E Vehicles like scooters and bikes like RECENTLY Got popular, like around 2022 was the year where most people started riding them.
A license, helmet, lights, insurance and registration for electric bikes should be mandatory.
