I have owned a Bafang BBS 2 mid-drive 750 watt kit with Panasonic 10.6 Ah battery. Used it on more than one bike. Absolutely fantastic. More bulky and heavy than what is shown here, but for a unit that is over 5 years old, it is a weapon. It has never let me down.
When I usually climb hills with my acoustic dollar store mountain bike, i usually would recommend to start at a high gear, gain speed, then right before hitting the hill lower the gear. I'm not a expert biker, but this usually works for me!
I’m a mountain biker and love your videos! This is cool. Great job. You made it! Seat up when climbing helps, but I find myself climbing seat down on my Ebike, feet closer to the ground always gives you that confidence to go faster🤘🏻
bike looks so ugly, would never ride that shii, better to just get a hub motor on those type of bike so it looks better rather than have a ballsack drop in the middle.
Hey dude, climbing with the seat down is terrible for your knees, and waaay less efficient. Also you shouldn't be scared to climb, descending is the far scarier part haha
I've been into diy ebikes for 2 years now and I'm saving to build one myself since Sur Rons in Europe, if not registered, are only offroad legal, you can't ride them on the street with no registration and license and get away with it. So it's very exciting to see you step into the Diy ebike theme. That's some amazing content to look forward to!
@@painexotic3757 Make sure you buy a battery with battery cells from a certified company like Samsung or LG. Cheap chinese batteries are the ones that burst into flames and burn houses. And probably look to buy it from a certified site too or even better, from a shop close to you.
sur rons are not road legal in any US state to my knowledge (might be a few exceptions). they are not mopeds because of power/speed/lack of pedals. I dont know how people get away with not being registered/insured, etc Probably in many states you could equip them with road legal lights/mirrors, register/insure them, but no one seems interested in that It only takes one cop or one accident to put you in trouble.
I have an incredible latest addition carbon fiber Specialized Stumpjumper that’s been collecting dust, waiting for something like this to come along. You’ve provided the blueprint for the next chapter of my lifelong cycling journey.
Ok... just specked this out "before" buying a bike. Just the battery and motor adds up to over $1500.... as much as a new 250 hawk street legal motorcycle. That is nuts. Can't wait until this stuff gets cheaper.
13:44 a tip from a mountain biker make the seat hight so that when you sit on it your legs are straight when the pedal is down this will ensure you get maximum foot power down while climbing and not get sore thighs
On my Surley Wednesday fatbike conversion, I used 2" wide pipe wrap tape to secure the triangle battery to the frame, Sounds half ass, but like yours, it works real well. Then I had a shop sew me a vinyl cover for it, so it like like a frame bag not a battery.
The part when you showed the kid and his replica was so great, The video of your red surron before was the very first video that I came to know your channel.
Awesome vid, nice to see the Photon in action! Great choice with CYC motor and BMW battery combo. I guess 12Ah should be decent capacity for 750w but when you start running it over 1000w you'll want more capacity to help with voltage sag. Also fyi I don't think they pronounce it "psych" motor, but it does sound pretty cool that way, heh.
Dude you need to put some extra air pressure in the suspension to cancel out the suspension bottoming outfrom the weight of the motor and battery. Great video by the way!
Try standing up when going up the hill and lean forward into the hill to keep the front wheel down. On the mtb gears you want the chain on the physically biggest gear when climbing and stand up on the peals with your weight forward.
I have an ancient Norco Bush Pilot from the early 90s...everytime I walk past it I wonder if it could ugrade...then i realise it needs disc brakes and a front shock of merit. The last time I had it serviced they soaked me for 700 bux, I could have bought half a kit from Parktools for that. I can''t afford to ride it, let alone upgrade it. I did love riding it though. On the other hand I''ve been looking at the e-bike market for a few years now and I've read the laws and I've decided. I''d like to have twin 250w 24v hub motors with the highest torque on the market fed by a single controller with torque management/antislip pulling from a 20AH 52v battery. The battery should be slung as low on the frame as possible. Dual suspension under a banana seat with 26" knobbys. Draw the pedals forward in the frame to accomodate long shanked people, bring the grips back to the rider with monkey bars. The same torque sensor setup you have here. I want an overland bike, I don't need speed. Canada is restrictive, 500w 25mph, so it made sense to split that limit to 2 motors to find more torque. The hitch so far is finding a controller programmed for dual output with the features. A few models over the decade have been dual setups, but with dual throttles. A single input from me should result in sychronous equal effort from both motors at once, until a significant slip is detected and that motor throttles back to regain traction while the other motor maintains it's torsional output. I have CYC in my email, this was a solid review for them too. A top notch product.
If you keep the rear cassette, how does it limit you to 28 MPH? I like the idea of being able to down-shift for more torque on hill climbs. I have an old Schwinn 21 speed MTB that I have been wanting to convert for a long time. I don't really want a hub motor, unless I get two lol, and this mid drive kit looks perfect for me. Odd side question. My bikes swing arm and front forks are ready for disk brakes but the wheels are not. How do I know what to get to upgrade my bike? I want to convert to hydraulic disks.
Two things, seat up when climbing and don’t try to get a run up like you’re a car, try to keep a constant speed and cadence to climb easier, also keep your eyes on the horizon
if yout put your weight forward you should be able to climb anything with that granny gear and pedal assist. the two "only" problems should be finding traction on the rear tire, and keeping the front wheel down. you dont need a lot of speed/momentum, just pedal smoothly, and keep just enough speed so that the bike doesn't almost come to a stop between each pedal stroke, other wise it's going to want to wheelie on every pedal stroke'
Love your style bro!! Keep killing it. If you ever think about leaving CA, I think you might really enjoy UT (my stomping grounds) the laws are a lot more laid back and the country is second to none.
I think he struggled before the hill because maintaining a low gear like 1-1 on acoustics are kinda hard so you can get easily tired. Next time if you wanna climb ahill put the front on 1 and back 7 or 12 and then change the back to lower gears as it gets harder to pedal. This is way more efficient and you get less tired and dont have to deal with the tiredness of 1-1.

Sure you can, just avoid cops and ride slower during the day and faster during the evening/Night when there is less people around report you.
It will be this 1 time getting caught by cops for not having a licence plate which is enough for your bike to be gone, you can't always escape them
