This 22″ Bowl Is One of the Prettiest Bowls I've Ever Turned | Wood Turning

- After waiting a few weeks now for it to dry, I was finally able to get this beautiful piece of flaming box elder back on the lathe and finish it up. By far one of the prettiest pieces I have turned, this bowl was also one of the most difficult for me as well. Between the height differences on the edge and some of the wood being on the softer side, I really had to take my time while turning this bowl. In the end though, I think it turned out awesome and is up there with some of my favorite bowls to date. My favorite wood to turn. You did it justice!
I’ve only been able to turn it but a handful of times but it’s quickly became one of my favorites as well! Especially how quick it dries
Oh WOW that is a stunning piece 👀👀👀
Thank you!
I think of box-elder as a smallish early succession tree, never one to grow as big as that chunk. That's a real beauty.
Flaming box elder is so interesting. Makes for a beautiful bowl. Wish we had it where I live. Nice work.
CRICKY that's a bloody ripper, the colours and grain pattern is stunning ,the sap wood also set up the natural edge, 👍👍👍👍Ernie smith from brisbane Australia
Appreciate the kind words Ernie! That sapwood makes for good contrast against the red and darker browns, I love when it creates a cool boarder like that
Stunning work thanks for sharing ... Terry in Ireland.
Thank you for the kind words terry!
looks like you got that lathe all stabilized and the outboard working for you! As always your production values and skill level are top notch! Love watching your process!
I appreciate the kind words Anthony! I am finally getting the hang of the extension and seeing what it is capable of. Got a few little tweaks I would like to do but overall it was a fantastic addition.
Absolutely Gorgeous! ❤
Thank you!
Beautiful, love box elder.
That's a beauty!
Thank you!
Amazing skills. Beautiful👏
Thank you Monica!
I am impressed that the tenon held that beast! Very nice work.
You and me both Lol hindsight I wish I would’ve gone with my bigger jaws but those 3” jaws haven’t ever let me down & thank you!
It's a beautiful bowl.
Thank you Gloria!
Hi Andrew im from Sydney Australia .. Your work is amazing mate .. Love big bowls so thanks for sharing cheers Glenn
Its awesome to think my work is reaching all the way over there from NC. Thanks for commenting and letting me know Glenn, I appreciate that!
Wonderful work
I appreciate that Robert!
nice soft touch, well done.
Thanks Scott!
Stunning bowl!
Thank you!
That is incredibly beautiful!
I just found your channel. Outstanding wood turning!
I bought a Laguna 18|36 several months ago, but have not been able to use it yet since standing is very painful due to back, hip and knee issues. Then I see you turning a 22” bowl with the same lathe and it really excites me about the time I can stand at the lathe once again and use that feature of the lathe. I have so many ideas I want to try, but being on my feet for 5-10 minutes is all I can take and I am toast for the rest of the day. Knee and hip replacements planned in the future.
This lathe is capable of a lot & this is only the 110v version too. But Im sorry to hear that; Would it be possible to rig up some sort of stool or chair to the height that would be needed in the meantime? I appreciate the kind words & glad you found my channel!
@@andrewmccarn A stool would not adequately work. As you know, the body controls the turning tools by doing the wood turners dance. To achieve good turnings, the hands and arms should just hold the tool while the body does the work. This is particularly true for turnings the size you do. Consequently, the shifting and twisting one must do becomes very painful for me while standing. My issues stem from a serious accident I had in 2016 in addition to others sustained while in the USMC during the Vietnam War in 1968. Now the chickens have come home to roost since arthritis from those injuries is compounding the problems.
That's huge! Very nice bowl!
Thanks! It was a challenge for sure.
Very nice. I love talking on big challenges, can be time consuming but very satisfying when all finished. I would love to see the mountain of shavings you produced😂
Ill just say that the shavings were enough to fill up my two chicken runs lol
Absolutely gorgeous ❤️ bowl!
Bravo...thanks for the video.
Thank you for the comment!
kudos to you man...for the talent, for the creation, and the extra effort to capture it all with lighting, sound, and best of all... the camera slider! enjoyed watching and i'm a now new subscriber.
Thank you for that & I appreciate the comment. Its nice when all the unseen things like that get noticed so thank you!
I agree! Your prettiest bowl. I love the flame
Definitely in the top 3!
Nicely done mate🙏👌
Thank ya buddy, I appreciate that!
Absolutely gorgeous ❤️
Thank you!
nicely done, beautiful wood.
Beauty!
Thank you Darren!
You're doing a great job with these large pieces. One suggestion you might want to try - when you are shaping the outside of the bottom if you switch to a push cut instead of a pull cut (same effective presentation of the bevel) you will get good clean cuts while still standing on the bottom end of the bowl instead of on the side. This helps to prevent possible injury should anything let loose. With these big pieces, there's a lot of energy there, even at low revs.
Thank you! Yeah bottoms are something that I have struggled to turn correctly in the past and end up just sanding an problems away. I want to get a new gouge that isn't so swept back like the one I use, I believe that would be a big help as well.
A beautiful bowl, awesome job!!
It is a beauty!
Absolutely stunning ✌️🔥🔥🔥
Amazing!!!
Hey Andrew, beautiful work!!! Very nice piece of wood!
Thank you! I can only take so much credit for this piece because the wood does all the work here!
Wow that's a beautiful bowl, reckon you could use it as a baby bath. Also reckon the guys at Laguna are jumping for joy, no better add for them than that. Hope they send you some free stuff. Cheers
lol Its big enough for one & thank you!
Wow, absolutely beautiful piece. That has some gorgeous grain and coloring in it. I love the look of that sort of extreme natural edge. Fantastic work.
Thank ya Scott! I love turning natural edge bowls with big differences in the heights like this but they sure can test my nerves too lol
That bowl is amazing! Love, love, love it!
Thank you Brenda!
Love the finish, absolutely beautiful ❤
Thank you!
I agree. That's a pretty piece.
Thank you!
What an incredible turn!!
Thanks Jim!
Stunning wood and a stunning piece! Awesome work!
Thank ya bud!
Amazing work. Your best bowl so far.
Thank you! I definitely agree its top 5
Absolutely gorgeous I’m a new turner and can’t wait to try something like this
It’s addicting! 2 months after I got my first lathe I was already wanting a larger one lol
Beautiful boxelder
Thanks!
Simplesmente uma das peças mais lindas que vi...👏👏👏
Very nice...
New sub here. Love your woodwork Andrew. Great camera work and music too! Love it more if you could show extended versions of the finishing process, that's the best and MOST satisfying part.
Thank you for subscribing & the wonderful compliment! I will be sure to think of that in the future because I agree with you, the wood really comes to life when the finish is put on. Its amazing how much of a transformation can happen.
I am not a turner myself.. I am a 76 yr old steel magnolia who loves to watch wood turning. I love this piece. It reminds me of my grandmothers bread/biscuit bowl that was passed to her by her grandmother...1800's.. I would like to know more about you, where you are in the Carolina's, etc. I was born and raised in Charleston SC. LGB
Thank you for the kind words and sharing some history! That is my goal for my work; I would love for them to be passed down & help create stories like the one you shared. This is my personal work but you can find my company at www.carolinagrainco.com. Also Charleston is a beautiful place! Would love to come back & visit soon; I have a some family there & have always loved that place.
Did you just look at that chunk and see that beauty inside waiting to be revealed or what? May I ask what kind of tree that came from? Outstanding work!
That is a very beautiful piece! We never see that wood here in West TN. I must say I sad to see all those shaving going on the floor. Just not enough room to use a coring system to recover bowls from the inside. Keep up the good work. Blessing !
Thank you! I have been turning for around 8 years and this is only the 3rd time I have ever worked with it & that just happened by luck as well lol And I agree! I actually tried to core a bowl on the extension a few weeks ago and It ended up catching & bending the only knife I have for my Oneway system so Im out of a coring system anyways until I get a new knife. The downward force on the knife without any back leg support on the extension was rough on the knife. Next time, I will try to add some legs or something to see if I can do it successfully.
Really gorgeous bowl! I have the same lathe, but I don't have the extension or anything for outboard turning. I couldn't carry a piece that large down to my lathe anyway.
Thank you! It’s a great lathe. I’ve had it about 6 months now and no complaints so far. Love the extension too. I struggled to pick this piece up myself lol I have a video coming up where I actually had to have my neighbor help me lol
Beautiful piece!! I've been wanting to purchase an extension to my 1836 Laguna. I have a couple 23" maple blanks I cut 2 years ago and I'm itching to turn them. I'm going to order the extension today!👍
Enjoy watching you turn!
I recommend it! My only suggestion is to replace the bolts the hold it on and get some that run through the legs entirely that you can bolt in place. I love it & glad I bought it.
@@andrewmccarn Thanks! I will do that 👍
absolutely gorgeous bowl. Box Elder is one of my favorites. Good technique and I love the fact that you are using some of the features of your lathe that you don't normally see people use. Great video. I have to ask, how did you dry that piece?
Thank you Alex! This is only my third time turning it but I have loved getting the opportunity to turn it. It dries so nice & quick. Also I love seeing what a lathe is capable of doing past the traditional work, I want to get my money's worth from it lol and to dry this bowl, I just let it sit in my office in front of the AC vent for a few weeks lol
Beautiful piece. Love watching the process. I really miss turning, just going to live vicariously through you lol. Is this one hitting the website?
Thank you Phillip! Any plans to get back into turning? And this one was actually for a custom order so this will be going to the client soon. Came from her childhood home!
@@andrewmccarn In a few years maybe. Had to sell all my stuff to cover medical bills from some injuries. Now I'm dealing with crazy nerve issues from Fibromyalgia. My hands go numb and super painful most days, so holding the gouge would be a bit scary for now.
@@philliprowland2161 aw, Phillip, my heart just goes out to you.
Really nice work! How long did it take for the smell of the wood to leave? Thank you for taking time to film, edit and post this video.
Thanks Donald! Usually the smell is gone once the shavings are cleaned up but my nose has become so immune to the smells now that nothing really stands out anymore except when I work with cedar.
It is beautiful! You should be quite proud. May I ask why you didn’t core it first.
Thank you! I wish I could have but I actually bent the only coring knife I have on a previous bowl trying to core on the extension so I am currently saving up to buy another lol
Must have been a gnarly chunk of tree that piece came out of. The ugliest parts of trees make the most beautiful bowls!
Too true! Some of the prettiest woods ive turned have come from rotting pieces. This tree was practically hollow at the base. I was lucky to get a chunk this size from it but glad I did!
Life is too short to turn ugly wood! You have a beauty.
I agree but also some of the prettiest wood i've turned I initially thought would be ugly! lol I just call ugliness "character" lol
Should have cored that piece of wood. Probably could have gottin 4 more nice bowls.
I would have loved too but the other week I tried to core a bowl on the extension & it caught & bent the only coring knife I have for my Oneway system so currently out of anyway I couldve done it.
amazing what most people would put in the fireplace.
"Firewood" tends to be some of the prettiest I have turned!
