- Western media is filled with headlines about the rise of American big tech monopolies like Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon. These companies control basically every portion of our social, financial, work, and entertainment lives. But, another set of companies that is often overlooked is big tech companies from China. For the longest time, companies like Tencent, Baidu, and Pinduoduo were largely limited to China, but over the past 5 years, they’ve been expanding internationally and a rapid pace. Tencent has a stake in basically every Western game company that you can think of. Bytedance is killing it with TikTok, and most recently, Pinduoduo has risen to new heights with the help of Temu. This video explains the rise of Chinese big tech giants and the future of American big tech vs Chinese big tech.

@TH-dr1kg Even just considering the Chinese middle and upper class i.e. their consumer market, it's still larger than the US' total population. There's a reason the iPhone sells more in China than even in the US.
chinese income can be lower, but everything is cheap in china: food, transportation, education, etc. you can watch many youtubers going to china to see everything firsthand.
India market is also so much bigger but none of Indian companies (despite licking American boots) are making it as much as China companies. This shows Chinese companies have gone leaps and bounds despite all the trade sanctions by sour grapes WEST.

One thing you got it wrong dude. Google, Microsoft or other US tech companies left China because they didn't want to follow Chinese regulations. Chips companies like Qualcom or Nvidia were simply not allowed to sell high-end products to China
What this means is that China is now another developed market everyone should consider while analyzing the world. There was US and Europe, now there is US, Europe and China.
OK, you go invest in China. Look at stock market returns in the top 500 US companies over the last 15 years and compare them to China's top 500 and tell me where any sane person would put their money.
They have a long way to go to be fully developed. Current Chinese GDP per capita (per World Bank) is comparable to Russia's at ~$12,500/yr. By comparison the US's GDP per capita is 5.6 times larger and the EU's is ~43,000/yr. This isn't to say that China doesn't have a large and relatively wealthy middle class. However, China's middle class makes far less than most westerners and they still have an enormous number of low income people mainly living in rural areas, estimated to be 477M in 2023.
The average earning in china per annum are like 10 grand. That's not developed, that's some cities are developed and the rural centres are backwaters. China relies on population too much, and we all know how that's going.
Except those development figures are manipulated by numbers released by the CCP. Even those numbers are looking bleak after the housing mortgage crisis that occurred and it’s current issues with deflation due to decreases in consumer confidence. For a country that tried so hard to look developed, they’re anything but (except a few cities like Beijing and Shanghai). Imagine attempting to buy a house only to be told it would be completed in ten years, then finding out your money was used to build someone else’s home without the companies having funds to build yours anymore. That’s what we call a Ponzi scheme but with houses.
Western market also crash every 10 years or so. Opportunities are what you make of it.
But what funniest is those who contribute and achieve absolutely nothing, still unemployed and use said GDP to feel better than others.
I doubt some poor rednecks would actually care about average Chinese when they dont even care about average Americans living paycheck to paycheck.

Well chinese smartphones are cheaper cause they are full of hardware bloatware and cars are:
1) deeply financiated by state investments
2) made with batteries that aren't recyclable, unlike european ones (american ones are in the same situation as chinese ones).
However... same goes for american smartphone. So the right path to follow is: 1) choose a chinese smartphone
2) choose a european electric car

You analysis is half correct, that time china was growing very fast and Chinese internet did not allow any american tech company to enter fully, so it maid sense as a Chinese person that start a company with same business model in china and the protection policy of the Chinese government, the homegrown companies were able to grow unchanged. That is why today they are Giants and only based in China, mostly. And right now they’re expanding
Many American tech companies entered China and failed, including Google, Amazon, EBay, Cisco, Uber, etc Microsoft is still operating in China, so does IBM.

I have seen this misconception a lot, it's not that China did not allow any American tech. It's because China has stricter censorship, they asked American tech to follow the censorship laws, but they wouldn't, so for example, Google left China voluntarily in 2009. They could've made 2 versions like Tiktok, but they didn't. You don't believe me? Ask Kai-Fu Lee. lol
No they founded company way before american companies left. The biggest reason was lax copyright and patent regulation. Chinese can copy any tech quickly and get away with no fines

China didn't achieve this hegemony out of nowhere. As you mentioned, it's a result of hard work, ambition, vision for the future and solid government backing in terms of policies and funding. Compared to my country's policies of systematically destroying education and the hopes of the people for a prosperous future, which leads to a brain drain and an enormous trade deficit, I honestly couldn't say anything other than "Good work, China".
I have lived in china for over 4 years now, I use pinduoduo for almost any shopping, I rarely use taobao the alibaba's main land version even tho it was the most popular, pinduoduo managed to dethrone them by just making everything cheap and they have only been around since 2015 if am not mistaken. like its unbelievable how convinient it is.

I don't think it matters. American tech companies grew in the same way: undercut, growth above profits. But now that they've reached market saturation, they need to raise prices. Chinese tech companies will have the same issue. They can grow all they want and may end up with market domination, but in the end they're going to have to start making profits too, and when that happens, another company will start eating into their market share with the same strategy: undercut, growth above profits. It's just a cycle.
In the name of balance I think we have to acknowledge that Evergrande, One of the largest Chinese property developers in the world has just gone into receivership with debts in excess of $300 billion. The economy is also suffering year on year deflation so I think it is not at all clear what the future holds for China economically speaking.

One thing to note about Chinese debt is that it's kinda similar to Japanese debt - almost all of it is held inside China itself. This applies to both govt. and corporate debt. So unlike a country like, say Sri Lanka, China isn't gonna bleed money to the outside world. Quite the opposite in fact - China is currently the world's largest creditor, with nations all over the world indebted to it.

Dear @LogicallyAnswered Hari, Singapore is NOT PART OF CHINA 4:45 . China is Central Asia and shares a border with Russia but Singapore sits at the equator. Two completely different geographies. Shou Zi Chew is Singaporean, just like me. Singapore was founded as a country in 1965, unlike China, which had a 5000+ year history before becoming the PRC we know today. So they are 2 different countries. Born in Singapore, Shou Zi Chew went to China to lead Chinese companies Xiaomi 2015 and TikTok 2021.
I think the confusion lies in the word “Chinese”. “Chinese” can mean
- citizen of China, or nationality
- of the Chinese race
In this case, Shou is of Chinese race, Singapore citizen, that went to China to work for Chinese companies (legal entities formed in China). His hometown is Singapore. He did NOT went back to China. He simply went to China to work.
To clarify, there are many Chinese (China citizens) that migrated to other countries and gained citizenship like in the US, Australia, and some southeast Asian countries, most notably Malaysia and Singapore. So there are Australian Chinese, Malaysian Chinese and Singaporean Chinese. In these 3 countries we can also find people born in India who went and gained citizenship: Australian Indians, Malaysian Indians, and Singaporean Indians (of course in the US “Indians” may refer to “American Indians”)

I bought a Japanese car (Toyota) because it would last longer without the need for a lot of maintenance. Had the American brands been more reliable, I would almost certainly have gotten one to support American workers. The takeaway for American companies is simple: compete.
My dad has a Suzuki and a Toyota, he had a Ford and a Fiat but Japanese cars ended up better than the rest from what he was saying. He's excited to try the newest cheap Chinese electric cars once they hit the nearby market.

You're mistakenly wrong that majority of Chinese State Owned Companies are only limited in China. In fact, a lot of them have major operations and subsidiaries outside China, for example majority of SOEs constructions have many construction projects even outside the Belt and Road Initiative participating countries, the State Grid of China has many subsidiaries in Southeast Asia.
Even huawei, i think they are the biggest network provider outside china.

Most Chinese will even tell you the Chinese government hides and does not accept the fact of homeless crime and poverty because it would look bad on their country. They do a very good job of hiding it but they have just much or very close to the US and those regards so these numbers cannot be trusted and we only get the numbers from what we see which again.. can’t be trusted

I am very aware of seeing Boeing go out of busniess in favor of COMAC or Asian companies building a plane that is safer and better quality than the Boeing 737 MAX, only to see Airbus as the only sole Western company that makes commercial airplanes while Asian companies replaces Boeing do to Boeing's flaws.

The numbers *really* don't mean that much coming from China, especially when their entire investment market is worthless now and major banks are failing. Always important to separate reality from reported numbers, they don't always line up. Then you have the other issues they'll be facing very soon, their next 30 or so years are pretty locked in regardless of what happens.
They definitely have shortfalls and a tendency to embellish the truth. But we definitely shouldn’t be underestimating them :)
Don't trust the quantifiable data.... If there is a country that has tremendous rate of growth, and high ceiling it's China. Their IQ, education, devotion, and industries are all competitive. Chinese people are smart and innovative. People seem to underestimate them for some reason. Even Jensen Huang who is technically Taiwanese is still genetically Chinese.... and that means he is likely to have been brought up with chinese culture with a focus on education and hardwork. I have always known that China was going to be the richest and advanced country in the world. If you look at their history they have had several golden ages. The very FACT that they controlled the silk road in the past should tell you that these people are savvy in business and tech.

Well, Morris Chang was actually born and raised in China but any ethnically Chinese person that immigrated through Taiwan to America is often considered Taiwanese American, which is more political than ethnic, perhaps to some extent there's the role of culture and education too, so technically it's hard to define the line, unless the family has been in Taiwan for generations and generations since the 16th, 17th century, but most likely most of the ones in America are waishengren whose family literally came from mainland China after the Chinese civil war.

One thing the west often tends to understate is the importance of language, likely because it undermines their claims to excellence but rather just them being lucky (or gifted by history). Chinese foreign students typically have terrible English, while Indians have English as a second language. This is a bigger deal than people give it credit for. There's a reason the top global universities are mostly in English-speaking countries - the US, UK and Australia. They're still beneficiaries of the British empire.
I am Chinese from HK. Typically Chinese is not good at teamwork. They try to fight each other until there is only one surviver so the winner can take all. At least this is what I observe in many different Fabs I work for years.
Chinese has great technical skills in general but bad communication skills. That is why many/most of them could not promote to manager/CEO.
Indian has far better communication skills that is why so many Indian CEO in the states. This is based on my experience.

Agreed. Since the pandemic, I've been watching Chinese FUD but the only thing I believe is unemployment and real estate. China has a lot of room to grow buying employing the unemployed and expanding business to other countries. America is just focused on margins regardless if it is work by done other countries (they quite late to realize this with the CHIPS and Inflation Reduction acts). China will take over the global automotive market with the US being the hardest for them. China has the renewable energy equipment to themselves which will becomes the source of electricity for many countries in the future.
If the US or other countries has to fight back vs China, it would be more immigration. They should Accept the talented and hard working willing immigrants including those from China.
5:26 Actually one of the prime reasons they believe they'll have better career prospects in china is in part due to US visa issues. Also I feel like this is becoming less true. Say if you chinese and you wanted to start a video game company and read headlines that china is now blocking micro-transactions and limiting playtime, etc, it's not a good bet.

Only problem I have with Chinese companies and their economy is they always seem to learn from outside. With that model they may just be more efficient to a model already done but without creativity it wont last long
For mature fields, creativety matters less. What I would be concerned about would be stuff like semiconductors

Bro, this video was not really educating. Look at the msci china. Trust in the chinese economy is EXTREMELY LOW. The biggest sector of the chinese economy (real estate) is fighting for survival. The 2nd biggest chinese real estate group (Evergrande) just got liquidated a couple of weeks ago because it couldn't repay it's 300 billion in debt. Lots of other chinese real estate companies are fighting for survival too, such as the company Country Garden.
On top of that China just entered DEFLATION means that consumer prices are falling. And that is because chinese people themselves hold back, they spend so little money that the prices are falling. Because of that China will rely even more on foreign trade. Problem with that: Europa and the USA are both on the brink of recession, meaning they import less and at the same time want to reduce their trade with China in preparations for a conflict with Taiwan. However, the United States is still BY FAR the biggest destination for chinese exports. Meaning: If the United States goes into Recession, China will too.
That or the chinese housing market collapses first. Which will lead to similar economic downturns as in 2008.
If you want to profit off of this situation I can suggest you to invest in a China ETF now or in a couple months but NOT expect any profits for a while. Most likely it will probably go even more into red. But looking on a 10 - 20 years perspective, this is of course a great opportunity to invest into China. But only in the LONG TERM.

It's the US work visa which is very hard to get (basically only qualify if you have extraordinary skill or your employer sponsors you). Lots of poorer countries also benefit from their citizens earning an inflated US salary and sending money back as remittences.
I have never met a foreign worker who were not allowed to work in US by their parent countries. Usually it is US preventing them from working.
