There are 2 reasons for this song. Lex mentioned about the groups versatility and that is one reason but the other is that when they played live, they played for about 3 hours and during that time a song like this meant they could sit down for 5 minutes and have an acoustic break.

This song is a bit of an homage to Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell whom both Robert and Jimmy were big fans of. When Joni got to the US, she settled in California which had a big folk music presence. Sometimes when they'd play this song in concert, after Robert sang the line "she plays guitar and cries and sings" he'd say "and she comes from Canada". Joni often used alternate guitar tunings for her songs, a skill Jimmy also often used for Zeppelin songs, including this song. Zeppelin have their own connection to California. California is the first place in the US that truly embraced Led Zeppelin's music. It was also the location of the infamous Hyatt House hotel (nicknamed the "Riot House") where the band would stay and was the scene for many legendary "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" type stories. When Jimmy was in California mixing the album this song was on, he experienced one of California's earthquakes, which is ironic considering the lyric "mountains and the canyons start to tremble and shake".

Trippy hippie vibes, man! "If you're going to San Francisco \ Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair" Scott McKenzie "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" (1967) "Stairway to Heaven" and "The Battle of Evermore" were the other two trippy hippie tunes on Led Zeppelin IV. Welsh songstress Sandy Denny joined Robert Plant on "The Battle of Evermore". She was the only other singer to ever appear on a Led Zeppelin album. The band even assigned a special symbol for her on the liner notes to the album. If you've got a thing for angelic voices, then lend your ears to her voice. Her work with Fairport Convention is quite masterful. For a taste, check out "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?", "Farewell, Farewell", "The Ballad Of Easy Rider", and "She Moves Through The Fair" among others.

As you probably know by now, man starting over from failed relationship, time in Cali, earthquakes in Cali and shout out to the awesome and great songwriter Joni Mitchell is the song narrative.
I was smirking when you said "this is a different sound from what I'm used to from led zepplin" what you guys didn't hear was the beast drummer John Bonham. You can't get the real led out without Bonham. Anyhoo great reaction and don't forget to smoke your stuff and drink all your wine ✌

Brilliant choice guys. Brad, that was definitely NOT autotune, man. One reason is that autotune tune wasn't around in 1971 and the other is that Robert Plant is one of rock music's greatest vocalists. He has no need autotune: he can sing.
And the guitars were Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones on the other guitar as there's no bass. You should check out more of the acoustic, rustic side to Led Zeppelin. She is a folk singer/songwriter (and later evolved into Jazz) from Canada who lived in Laurel Canyon in the mountains above LA in the late 60s early 70s. I like it when acoustic songs have a context.
Oasis have an acoustic song "Talk Tonight" and it's a nice little story that builds though the song..
The background was when senior member of the group Noel Gallagher was hit on the head by younger brother Liam Gallagher in a US concert.
Noel in anger flew off to San Francisco to spend time with a female friend and there he composed this masterpiece song.
Years later he cannot remember the name nor address of the woman he spent the night with.
You should give it a listen. One of the best acoustic songs I've listened to.

There was no autotune in 1971. Song is an homage to Joni Mitchell, I think her both as a person and as an artist. Battle of Evermore is from same album, and is really a beautiful strong acoustic only tune too. Bron-yR-Aur Stomp is great fun all acoustic song too, personal favorite. I think it's about someone's dog(?).

Love this channel. You both are hearing these songs for the first time as opposed to us who have been hearing them since the 70's. There is no music like this today...it really sucks for us who grew up on real music.

Another example of why Zeppelin was, is and WILL ALWAYS BE the ultimate rock band. They did EVERYTHING- rock, blues, r&b, soul, funk, folk, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, prof, fusion, et Al…

No autotune, but they did use some studio effects. Led Zeppelin used multitracks where they would record dual tracks on many instruments, and sometimes on the vocals as well to get a fatter sound. I love the fact that while slower songs with electric guitar put Brad to sleep, an acoustic "folk" ballad like this gets him fully dialed in. Just proves that like all of us Brad has his individual tastes. As Lex has observed many times, Led Zeppelin is also a favorite of mine because of their ability to master so many genres of music. Along with Queen, David Bowie, and Prince, they are among the most "genre fluid" bands or artists that have enjoyed widespread popularity.

I heard this song was a tribute to Joni Mitchell - she was the girl with love in heart and flowers in her and played guitar and sings....

There was no Antotune in '74. Robert Plant is that outstanding.... I think there may have been an echo effect on his voice... but his notes were as pure as gold!!! Lex got that!!!

Rain Song. Gotta listen to it, different and beautiful. Takes you to a different place, similar in the manner of Pink Floyd's - Wish You Were Here

Jimmy Page on acoustic guitar, John Paul Jones on mandolin (Jones is a multi-instrumentalist who usually plays bass and also keys). Not in this song, but whenever you hear harmonica it is being played by singer Robert Plant.

Led Zeppelin actually has a lot of a great acoustic songs. They don’t always rock out. You should try a Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, one of my favorites. Can’t help but tap your foot along.
