"I don't have to go as dainty as others recommend" honestly a good takeaway of this channel, I started getting much better gloss coats once I started going a little heavier after the first few coats
@@twig4590 so that's why I can never find spoons int he store. Plenty of forks, but no spoons. A little hard to eat my ice cream with a fork once it starts getting soft.
Awesome colored chrome looks. When I get around to it, I would like to try using less chrome over the colored spoons, to get more of the color showing. While I was watching, I was like "stop there". Hard to tell on the video what it would really look like. Great job Barbatos Rex. Thanx for another great video.
I've the most important aspect for painting alclad chrome is how glossy the base is. That is why I love your 2k gloss black for whenever I use chrome. It makes it look like real metal with that as a base. And I believe since your gloss black is a urethane, it makes Alclad chrome more durable because it is a much stronger base.
That's a misconception. It's how smooth the surface is. I've got a friend who painted a beautiful glossy base coat, but the surface was grainy... Glossy, but grainy. It ruined the metal effect.
love your videos, i found your channel a few weeks ago y watched over 50 videos now, i have a question for you, what would be the best combination for chrome paint and clear combo for me to buy? i want to fix som vintage GI joes and do some customs also, keep up the good work!! thank you in advanced.
I swear you use this footage before for the spoons. In the beginning. It was very funny. Awesome video was always. Proud Patreon member commenting to support the channel. Be well be you
"I get a lot of questions that people are still having trouble." - hahaha, thank you, Barbatos Rex! I feel seen! But seriously, thanks for yet another great and educational video. And if you're gonna buy that many spoons, give Costco a try.
I just got your swallowtail air brush, I won it from another youtuber, I'll be testing it here soon on my channel, I hope I can find and get the fan cap for it, I would like to see you try to add clear colors to the Alclad Chrome to see if you can tint the paint B4 you spray it onto black, Love your videos and info, Keep up the great work sir.
Looks great, thanks for the test. The only other one I'd have been interested to see would have been over silver, or even white, as a less chrome version of chrome.
I'm so glad you mentioned you were having issues with your Alclad Black Gloss base. I have a bottle and have tried to use it 3 times now and it just won't cure. Stays tacky and leaves finger prints if I hold the piece for a few seconds no matter how long I left it to dry. Thanks for the Tip about the Tamiya spray can. I use Tamiya and Mr hobby for my Gunpla and have followed more than a few of your recommendations.
i bought all 3 chromes from sms, love their stuff, cant wait for more tests on it. I would love to see if you can test various top coats(gloss primarily), on it to see which works best. Outside of their in brand stuff of course.
Looking forward to the chrome comparison. I tried Alclad but I never got anything that looked like chrome regardless of the color I shot it over. It just looked like silver paint instead of chrome.
the problem with clear coating chrome is that chrome is a surface effect. So anything that takes the chrome below the surface pretty much ruins its light refractive properties. For a true mirror finish, you would need to try tank plating plastic in silver solution to reach the mirror finish, then sealing with like a 2K clear.
I had no idea that there were so many different chrome paints. I have a project coming up that I need a small amount of chrome, was going to go with Molotow, but now I'm not so sure... I'll be painting 3D printed parts, so I guess if Molotow doesn't look that good I can always reprint...
So happy for you and the channel. Keep up the great work. We all appreciate it! Quick question. You said there is a reason for the Alclad Aqua Gloss to be acrylic. Could you please elaborate?
Chrome piant has a special type of pigment of flakes in it. They're flat. So when they settle it forms the chrome look. When applying a solvent based clear on top it unsettles the flat pigments, pulling them up and out of place let's say, thus ruining the chrome appearance. It has no affect of coarse when using an acrylic
It's requires less finess than allclad, but I'll try n get back to you with an answer later for the clear after I do some spoon because I usually use a clear color on my chrome I rarely do just chrome except when hand painting. So I'll do 3 spoons and let you know after.
I wish you would have sprayed the chrome over gloss white and gloss silver. Over some pearl and metallic gloss colors would have been nice to see. And over some ChromaFlair, the color changing paint.
This waa great review/test of alclad chrome on colors. I loved it, going to try it over gloss orange. 1st question, does alclad chrome require a base, meaning can you spray it bare plastic whatever the color? 2nd question, i think you mentioned a heavy application can come out dull. So can you polish a shine using a cotton t-shirt or diaper? 3rd question, can you use a rubbing compound or Tamiya's polishing compound on it? Last question, just curious on the average how many hours a day do spend at the bench? Thanks as always. Come on 100k sub's.
I know some of these so I'll address them the best I can. 1) Alclad chrome goes over their gloss black base. Spraying chrome on bare plastic won't do anything. Almost all chrome will require a base, those "chrome" rustoleum paints at the hardware store are just silver. 2) this isn't real chrome, like a metalized finish, so polishing will just rub off the paint. 3) pretty much the only topcoat that you should really be using is Alclad's aqua gloss. That's about the only topcoat that won't destroy the chrome finish. You might be able to get away with Pledge floor polish, I haven't tried that over chrome paints. Oh and don't use any compounds on it. It'll just strip off the paint and / or clear topcoat
when done over gloss and or flat black you can get the look of multiple metals everything from aluminum, steel and even that real chrome look it is a flip flop on which does a better job ALCLAD or SHRAPNEL and I would say it'll depend on your base material since Shrapnel works on flexible materials I made a great set of chromed compound bow limbs for the Smallville Green Arrow prop and Alclad was pure perfection for that because I was painting fiberglass limbs that had little flex
Have you ever sprayed the Spectraflame colors from the Redline Shop over Alclad Chrome? I have looked through your videos and didn't find anything about Spectraflame. I really like your videos.

What does it do it you spray the inside of something clear like a plane canopy with the chrome, and then spray color over that? I'd like a chrome-red or chrome-blue plane canopy!
Hi Robert. Hoping you and your wife are doing good. Not sure if you will see this after this video as posted over a month ago. I got back into the hobby about a year ago and have watched your videos more than once to try and absorb all the info. Bought your Barbatos Rex Swallow tail and both Mobius airbrushes on your recommendation and love them. Still working to getting better at airbrushing but getting decent results. One question. To you prime the bare plastic parts before the Gloss Black base and then apply the Alclad chrome or just spray the black base on the bare plastic?
I really depends on the type of or brand of plastic. Most times I just spray the plastic spoon with Gloss black, but to be safe I'd always consider primer. Use a smooth primer like Mr Surfacer 1500
Just as a aside on Tamiya Sprays i've just come across a post on the 'Tube that Canada has banned importation of their sprays..bit of a worry hope that apply to other countries
If I want to use alclad chrome as a metallic base to then put an acrylic spray paint on top of it, would I need to put some sort of clear coat over it first because it will be fragile? I want o mask areas and have the metallic chrome show through like battle damage under Montana black paints
It does change the look. They sell Aqua Gloss for coating chrome. It need to be an acrylic because a solvent based clear causes a reaction to the chrome and that changes the look
