- The Nigerian government has to intervene decisively on behalf of the majority of the people by enforcing price control mechanisms that protect citizens from exploitation as envisaged under the Price Control Act.
This is the view of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, who believes that this is necessary to guarantee that the economy of the country is not concentrated in the hands of a few.
Falana spoke with Channels Television’s correspondent, Shola Soyele against the background of his recent lawsuit against the federal government over failure to control the rising prices of essential commodities.

This is so funny 🤣🤣🤣, the same government who do not produce agricultural items, will wake up from their slumber one day and start saying we want to control price
God bless you sir
I noticed they didn't mention cement which is produced here I Nigeria and yet presently sold for over 7,000 Naira
Baba Falana, you are doing the best to ease the sufferings of the poor BUT will the price control work in the corrupt system in Nigeria?
God will bless you sir, this is a lawless country.that our problems,do as you like .
I love this man
His colleagues in Nigeria are not flies who are looking for a place to perch on ,they will form a formidable voice for the voiceless
Don't love this man yet bro! This in his character was very ambiguous when the people's mandate was being stolen.
Nigerians........ forget real estate and pursue agriculture. Let's all start a mini family agriculture campaign. Everyone Go to your backyard and plant yam , pepper , tomato, okro, ewuro, Edo, poultry . Everyone do backyard farming at least no matter how small ( if you don't have plot of land) . Everyone plant something , grow something, anything . Let's start with that . If 100 million people can do backyard farming at least ( not as a business ,but for consumption and exchange purposes only) this idea will change a lot in the country .
This is just one of the disgraceful act by out service men. Police, Army, Road safety, Nepa officials, customs, Petrol station owners and association, market women, vendors, The list is on and on. The truth is we are our own problem. The country is full of greedy Citizens. And we cannot change anything with such attitude. Now we go dey blame the government. Government will put petrol price at 600 naira. ...to increase the price..petrol station will shut down for few day causing scarcity and madness. Then iya loja too go increase price of food commodity blaming it on transportation price. Everything is fixed to rob ourselves. What a Nation
Price control is implemented everywhere. An example, in the UK where I live, transport cost is controlled by governmentbso that people are not ripped off. TRANSPORT For London (TfL) is In charge of running public transportation including trains buses trams taxi etc.
I bet the government has a stake in the transport companies or at least there are few companies that run the transport. That's different from pure market determining the price.
My dear, you can't compare what's happening in Nigeria 🇳🇬 with what is happening in the UK or even in other parts of the world. Does the government own the transport in Nigeria? Are they going to tell a businessman who is doing his business without any support from the government how to run his or her business? I'm based here in Malaysia 🇲🇾 and I send spare parts to Nigeria, before this government came into power 1m naira was worth more than 6k ringgit, but today as we speak, 1m naira is worth 3200 ringgit, and the import duty increases like everyday in Nigeria.
God bless Falana ,,the Gani Fawemi of our time
Don't love this man yet bro! This man in his character was very ambiguous in his public utterances when the people's mandate was being stolen.
I enjoyed the programme.
Thank you very much.
The cement prices are very high, and these people are getting duty waivers .
Like Dangote.
What type of country is this called Nigeria very horrible nations.
Please there no place in the world when cost of production is unknown to the government and the government will be talking about price control.
In capitalist and democratic country the of production and arriving cost of imported goods must be known to the government before price control.
Are their no laws available to FG to conroll, corruption and
banditry?
They should start tackling the roots of the problem.
Good question?
To be able to fix prices the government will have to make all things available and possible as in good governance
Point of correction the price of rice in delta state ughelli is 88000 to 100000k thanks
You are the best

Longer Life Sir Olorun Yoo Ki Ele la oju pepepepe
Are we not in a free market economy? The price of fertilizer, seedlings petroleum products, electricity are skyrocketing, etc everyday. The mother of all devaluation of the naira. All these constitutes cost of production. The major contributor to the GDP is Agriculture what's the rate of return from Agriculture. Moreover what incentives does the farmers have? Is it insecurity where farmers don't go to farm? For the medium term the Government urgently need to import food to cushion the suffering as well as crashing the prices of food.
Am in support of falanu
That is how it happened in All Country
Mr FALANA, does Nigerian constitution working?
Import duties is too much it needs to be cut down seriously
Rice is 60 thousand and above 70 thousand not 40 where I am
The problem of this country is the government, from president down to the house members
Thanks to Mr. President for taking this very good decision.
For the Govt to control the prices of the products it does not produce is only possible through direct subsidies. We all know how well that has worked with fuel. The only recourse is massive uptick in national productivity.
About the cause of hunger in the country, my view insecurity and fuel price is the major factor...
How can you control princess of goods when you can not control your resources and economy.. when dollars as foreign money determined your rate of goods that comes into the country., when Government increased import duty to no man reach which determines prices of commodities. Is called sale as you buy, that's Nigeria marketing
rice is currently 69000 per bag
You can't tell people to fix a particular price on their items when your policies have inflicted hardship making it difficult to realise profits. Remove your harsh economic policies and price will adjust, then you can have the morality to ensure price is controlled.
Pls when falana will retire, who will replace him and his role in national issues?
They said the whole world is praising Tinubu for the policies in Nigeria. Question, is it possible that he is implementing B!ll gat£s policies to reduce the world population??? He has always said the world is over populated so they are using Tinubu kpai Nigerians. I wonder, I 🤔
We want the government to address the insecurity, and most of our people can not go to the farm because of the fulani herdman and kidnapping.
That is a fact. Having land is one thing but going there on a regular basis you risk being kidnapped, robbed or murdered
If the government are sensible and are willing to do the right thing, they have to do everything possible to solve the insecurity issues first.
Unfortunately, an adult who has access to the internet at this age can still resort to stereotypes. Are you blind enough not to see that the recently arrested kidnappers happen to be from other ethnic groups? They say fool@40.
Sir, Dangote's cement is sold 7,000 naira now,,, car clearance from the wharf is from 1 million naira now, 20Ft, container is 4 million naira, buhari and Tinubu determined to destroy businesses and citizens of Nigeria with hardship, kidnappers every corner of Nigeria, mass killing of innocent Christians in the plateau, Benue ,kaduna, Nasarawa and in the southeast and south west...I pray for mass protest in Nigeria
You will first of all control your exchange rate,
The government cannot fix prices of food. That will drive down food production and lead to hoarding and eventual higher cost
If government is already subsidising the producers, e.g. the fuel they use to produce andthe electricity they use to produce, the producers in turn should agree with the government of regulation of prices.
Falana has suggested reducing import duties for local producers on items they import like machineries, parts, equipments and production starting materials). The reduction in payment of duties will come in an agreement with the producers to agree with government price regulation of their products.
Government can fix prices. They are currently fixing price of petrol, electricity and import duties
Producers are getting duty wavers ( meaning they do not pay) that's not capitalism. That's a subsidy for the rich socialism for the rich. But they can't then fix prices in the market.

This doesn't look realistic to me.... What I see this causing is HOARDING of those resources or goods or product and services.... The suppliers/sellers will cause artificial scarcity..... That's what will happen considering the nature of this part of the world....
What is the law all about. Let govt. Fix Dollar cost.
Our problem in this country is our political leaders.
Please you can control dollar price not commodity prices,Do you know that today NNPCL and shell PLC can not supply steady gas to the industries that need them for production, now how do you control prices of goods when there is scarcity of such commodity, please it may be lawful but not implementable. The solution is more production
I'm very sure Sheyi Tinubu will have close to 100 oil blocks.....if not let's EFCC investigate him.
Sorry it is a demand and supply thing. Can we fix his legal fees?
That was when Nigeria was a country, which has constitution and respect it,law has no seat in Nigeria, before Nigerian government will force the masses to obey, the price of fuel must be brought down to at least 100naira, I think you are just wasting your strength, let the farmers enjoy their food, unless, the government will tackle the problem of corruption, Nigeria will not see light, founded in wisdom, judiciary has destroy their imagine, they know what they did to Nigeria, during the 2023general presidential candidates election, God save Nigeria
Can you first of all control your custom duty?
Who watches the watchman😡😡😡
Forget bout Falana big grammar,he knows fully well that Nigeria WILL NEVER WORK. He's only trying to be relevant,he's part of the problem. He kept changing all the time
Forget about this nation call zoo is gone forever
A bad tree can never produce a good fruit. Tinubu can never do good to Nigerians, why because what does not belongs to you is not yours, even you snatched it and runaway with it, is not yours.
You should preach the opposite. Government should stay out of business
Femi Falana should perhaps just come out and start preaching Marxism instead of hiding behind the so-called "under the law' vomiting inconsequential punditry all the time?
Academic exercise and a lawyer who just want to speak grammer.A SAN who does not know the basic economic principle.Oga lawyer stay on your law.
It’s a gamut of things for government to control price of goods and services that it doesn’t produce. There are many factors that go into displaying tomato for sale in the market. Consider the cost of vehicle to transport; cost of fuel, fertilizer, implements to till the land, costs of labour etc
Government can fix prices. They are currently fixing price of petrol, electricity and import duties
Falana has explained how.
Falana has suggested reducing import duties for local producers on items they import like machineries, parts, equipments and production starting materials). The reduction in payment of duties will come in an agreement with the producers to agree with government price regulation of their products.
If government is already subsidising the producers, e.g. the fuel they use to produce andthe electricity they use to produce, the producers in turn should agree with the government of regulation of prices.
Producers are getting tax holidays. They won't pay tax for a period.
Well, we can see how price controls worked under Communism , for example the former USSR. Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, East Germany etc. President Tinubu needs to solve the insecurity issues so farmers can tend to their farms.
War is coming
Kangaroo economics, how can you be talking of price control? If you control price level of a commodity, will you also control supply to the market? Where do you guys learn your economics? Price control will only lead to rationing, it's not even an option.
How do you control the price of fuel. You are not updated at all. If you said the price of rice. How do you fix price of what you don't produce. You are talking gibberish. Clamp down on all prices of everything. Start with petrol. Why don't you make the Govt bring down the price of petrol. You have lost your intelligence
Exactly, especially diesel because all goods are transported by diesel
In fairness to the SAN, he actually mentioned that fuel subsidy and every other goods and services, dollarization of the economy should be reviewed by the Government
