Add Chords To A Melody You've Written - 5 EASY Steps

Step 1: Figure out the key signature of your melody
Step 2: Figure out the diatonic chords of the key signature
Step 3: Play different diatonic chords with your melody, and use chords that have the melody notes in them for each part of the melody.
Step 4: Try swapping major for minor (or minor for major) in the diatonic chords for more harmonic colors and choices of chords. You can also look at the diatonic chords of the parallel minor/major key for more options.
Step 5: Secondary Dominants (I don't go into much detail in this video because I will be making a video about this in the very near future)

I find all your videos very helpful and this is no exception. One subject I would like to see is the theory of playing the chord melody of a song for any instrument. I see plenty of people showing the chord melody of a particular song on their particular instrument but would like to see a more universal approach.

It would be cool to see a video approaching this same topic from the inverse direction. How about writing melodies to chord progressions you've come up with? I know on some levels there's some overlap, but there are definitely some differences to this approach and it would be interesting to hear you distinguish them meaningfully.

Starting At 21:05 The F to C (IV - I) transition is a "plagal cadence" so it sounds good or familiar.

Easiest way to find the key signature of a song you are listening to:
1. Listen
2. Hum one note over the song you are listening to
3. Find the note on your instrument.
4. Play the major and the minor chord of this note on your (precisely tuned) instrument over the song.
5. The chord that is fitting better will give you the key signature of the song.
Works over 90% of the time like a charm!
The dilemma is not that there are no wrong answers it is that there are many right answers from which you can choose your direction.

Dear Gracie,
I think it was very interesting how you and your friend Rodim analyze the chords to your melody.
What struck my mind is that the two of you is discussing very much the situation, which is the right way.
As I am a musician of feeling, I would just do it, and find the chords by feeling, that`s how I did it all these years.
But to analyze and talk about it is the real lesson, which is very positive, that is the right way.
I would have just choose by ear the best chords, but there for I could be mistaken, not finding immediately the correct chords not knowing what I`m doing, just searching around, that can happen.
My ear was always much faster then my brain.
And the risk would be not getting the exact right chords, and getting something that somewhat sounds good, but not the real thing, not knowing why.
But my way of composing was much different, I never had a fix melody just an idea, the song developed as I progressed, and get the inspiration bit by bit, as I play all these instruments each instrument I add to it brings me new ideas.
But there for I would keep searching until I find something that satisfy my ears, and mostly I was right.
I could trust my ears

How on Earth would you not know the key of a melody you've written? Is it atypical to pick the key first and noodle around with it to write a melody?
Although your way of defining the key sounded good, it also seemed a little bit labourious. I always check out halfsteps in the melody and there will you have the third and the fourth or the seventh and the octave, maybe even both pairs. If there's no halfsteps the melody probably is pentatonic and the key is still pretty easy to define.
Gracie … so funny … all the ("randomly wrong") chords your partner offered made for marvelous endings … 🤪 and you knew it … 😂😂 then, when that yawning vanilla Cmaj. came in, my heart sank … 🤣 whereas you were all delighted … working for the cause 🤓

I think you should tell people upfront that they cannot get access to any of your associated materials unless they pay monthly fees by subscribing to your patreon channel.

@LP A - To be honest, I watched this entire video without realizing there were some sort of 'extras' available, until you mentioned it.
