@@DylansTravelReports Hi Mike. Great to see you caught up with Dylan's excellent coverage of the Jacobite Steam Train. Did you note the comment I left describing two day trips of mine through beautiful Scotland back in 2018?
A while back I suggested steam trains. I don't know how I missed this, but it surely did not disappoint me. As a 73 year old guy, I played with and still collect toy trains. There is a brand here in the USA called American Flyer. They developed in the mid 40s a mechanical choo choo sound system, and this engine sounds very similar. I have to say, I love all of your videos, but this is the BEST. Thank you, Dylan.

I rode on the Jacobite to Mallaig last summer while on holiday, a super experience. Scotland is so stunning. Looks like you did it in the autumn with all that beautiful golden colour.
That was a fantastic classic train ride! I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the steam locomotive. And then when you went inside, the patterned seats, woodwork and the old lamps were perfect. Then to top it all off, the clickety-clack rails and the sound of the locomotive. That was the whole thing, the classic train experience. I remember being in Mallaig on a Highlands road trip with some friends a few years back and whilst waiting for the ferry to Skye we saw one of these steam trains pull up to the station. This brings back memories!

When I did the Jacobite in Summer 2018 there were people standing in the most unlikely places en route (such as in the middle of a bog) watching the train go past. It's interesting people are still doing that during lockdown!
Thanks, Dylan, for this brilliant coverage of the Jacobite Steam Train. It brought back fond memories of my visit in September 2018. I had two bites at riding the Mallaig line; the first was on those Class 156 units on a round day trip from Crianlarich. I travelled forward via rail to Oban, then took the West Coast Coach to Fort William, then rail to Mallaig and all the way back to Crianlarich, crossing the Jacobite with 45212 at Mallaig and later at Glenfinnan on its afternoon outward trip. The second day trip was from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, by coach from Kyle across to the Isle of Skye over the Kyle bridge, then down to Armadale and across to Mallaig on the ferry. Travelled on the Jacobite back to Fort William behind 62005 and had an early dinner at the Morrisons store before catching the Intercity Coach back to Inverness. I must tell my Aussie friends about this video.Oh! I almost forgot. Our Canadian friend Michael Downie (of DownieLive fame) would be interested in your coverage as he had a brief visit to Fort William back in March which was out of season for the Jacobite. I'm sure he'll give you a hearted comment for this video. Thanks again for the memories of this wonderful part of Scotland. Stay safe and I look forward to next week's travel report. Cheers from Michael downunder in Melbourne where Covid restrictions have mostly been removed.
Great video! Better weather than when we did it last year. Worth mentioning where you were filming at the start was the site of the old station pre 1975!
Thanks, Dylan! So here I am blown away !!! This is one of my favorite videos from your channel. A steam locomotive !!! You imagine !!! It's awesome. Everything is magnificent: the locomotive, the train, the atmosphere, the landscapes, the departure station, the arrival station, the villages that you showed us. Oh dear !!! I love. Thanks to you. A real treat to see your videos, it's delicious !!! You give your all for us and in addition you enjoy the best trains. What memories in your head !!! Thanks again to you.
Hey Dylan, greetings from a new subscriber in California. I just noticed your videos for the first time and I must say I'm addicted. Keep up the great work. I am so jealous of all your rail travel.
You could always travel up from London Euston on the overnight "Caledonian Sleeper" train to Fort William (or, if you prefer the Scottish version, An Gearasdan) and, if the weather is kind, climb Ben Nevis. Or visit the Aluminium Smelter and see how clay is turned into metal. Or visit the Distillery and see how water is turned into whisky! I don't know if McTavish's Kitchen in Fort William still does Haggis, Neeps and Tatties with an evening of Scottish Country Dancing but it's worth checking out ...
What a beautiful train, from the steam locomotive to the exterior to the lovely first class to the clickety clack to the slam of the door at the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, Dylan. Thank you so much for sharing! See you next week!
What an amazing experience! Thanks for sharing this with us, Dylan. Yes, there's a mystique and a romance to a steam-haled train on jointed tracks that are hard to beat.
Definitely on my bucket list! But you know what would be even more amazing? Caledonian sleeper from London to Fort William, then on to Mallaig (ideally on the Jacobite, but hey, even a Sprinter would do), then ferry to Skye. I think there's a bus to Kyle of Lochalsh, from where you could catch a train back to Inverness (I think they even do some steam-hauled excursions along that line) and then the Caledonian Sleeper back to London. Would have to be between May and July to take advantage of the long daylight hours!
Absolutely awesome review Dylan, one of the best I've seen from you so far. Could you by chance start reviewing other steam railtours by various other charter train companies? (Providing demand is high enough of course)
Loved this review. The overcast weather, in a sense, made the scenery even better. Clouds rolling across hilltops is majestic in my opinion. This also reminded me of the Verde Canyon Railroad near Sedona, Arizona, US. I highly recommend it if you ever get the chance!
Been watching your travels for a while, this video earned you a new subscriber, the scenery, your simple yet elegant descriptions you used for the entire journey with out over embellishing it all definitely makes me want to continue following you. Thanks for the beautiful trip report!
Thank-you for this reminder of the trip taken by a friend and I in the summer of 2014 - when we were both celebrating out 50th birthdays. I think we had the same seats as you. On our trip the outward stop at Glenfinnan was around 40 minutes allowing everyone to detrain, have a stretch, visit the museum, have tea in the restaurant coach at the other side of the station, etc., but presumably that would have been out of bounds due to the pandemic... We also dropped a few passengers at Arisaig; and as well as the lunch stop in a much busier Mallaig; had another 25 minute stop at Glenfinnan on the way back - which was crossing the afternoon Jacobite steam train that runs in summer. This was quite a performance actually as our train had seven coaches and straddled the points - hence a great deal of shunting was needed... Lovely to view the scenery in autumn, though. I trust you enjoyed it as much as we did.
What amazing autumn colours. The scenery is stunning. Did the run on the Jacobite some years ago, a great treat. Now I use the Scotrail service at £15 return, same scenery! Or go from Glasgow to Mallaig, £41 return. Even more stunning scenery and crossing Rannoch Moor.

Hello Dylan. That was a fine video. i had the pleasure of doing that line on my visit to the area in February 2020 prior to the current unpleasantness. The Jacobite steam train wasn't operating at that time, so I did it via the regular Scotrail service. The £15 or so return fare from Fort William to Mallaig is probably the best £15 I've spent this year. The scenery is great and ample time to have a few beers and a bit of lunch in Mallaig. Fort William is a good place to stay and hope you got the opportunity to hang around.

What a wonderful scenery❤️ hats off to the authorities who have strived hard to maintain such a beautiful steam locomotive and those gorgeous coaches.👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏾
Dylan, my husband and I enjoy watching all of your videos (especially since we haven’t been able to travel during the pandemic), and we like your videos the best over other travel vlogs, but this is one of my very favorites. Scotland is on our list, and I hope someday (hopefully soon) we can experience this rail journey ourselves. In the meantime, keep up the great work and thank you for the videos you provide!
This is for me ! What an amazing trip on a fantastic steam powered train. The train was as you mention impeccably clean and the scenery was some of the best you have shown us. This is definitely something to experience for everyone travelling to Scotland. In terms of pricing I had estimated based on tourist trains in North America the cost of your trip at about 150 euros and I was spot on but you got 2 seats for that- not bad. Great shot of the loco, a 4-6-0 and a beauty at that. This is now my new favourite train trip, Isle of Wight falls to number 2 !!
hey Dylan this has got to be your best vidio yet. that train is priceless loved the engine . the sceenery was georgeous such a mixture of beautiful greens and golds on the trees well done buddy .
What a wonderful experience! A simple gourmet sandwich and pickle is a first clasd minimum. Amtrak’s food WAS very good and advocates are working to keep it that way after the pandemic.
Well done Dylan! Somewhat envious over here in Thailand. Will try and do a steam trip here in 2021.But as they only tend to to run on bank holidays can get a bit busy.
Charming engine and train cars, fabulous views...what a nice day trip! A little pricey, but in this case worthwhile. And yes, the clicketty-clacks and the chugging engine transcend time. Loved every minute of the video. Thanks!
Magical, absolutely magical. This ranks #1 on my list of your videos. Thank you so very much. I'll be traveling to Scotland next July, and can't wait to experience some of it's beauty in person.
Amazing scenery, hope to go there one day as that is where my grandfather is from (Scotland). Enjoyed the video a lot Dylan and enjoy how you present the content. beautiful train ride thru scotish countryside on the old train cars and spectular views; very clean train; I love the old lamps . nice snacks; and the food car was open; nice to see
OMG! Not been to Mallaig in 20 years! Too much for my emotions - Black 5, BR Standard coaches, scenery beyond compare, a birthday meal in Arisaig. There are other emotions that will remain private. Dylan, Thank You for this video - I will treasure this. Stay Safe. Keep travelling!
Great scenery and informative video. I want to do this journey, hopefully one of these days. Thanks for taking us on a journey that is unparalleled! One of the most wonderful areas of the world...
I loved this video. I was lucky enough to go on this train in 2019 and loved every minute of it and watching this has made me want to go on it again. Great work again Pal 👍🏻
According to my Ian Allen A B C British Railways book (circa 1960) the number of The Lancashire Fusilier was 46119 so it has been re numbered to 45407. Great video thanks and yes the scenery is beautiful in that area.
Did you see the two locomotives bringing the overnight "Caledonian Sleeper" train from London Euston into Fort William at the start of Dylan's video? Oh, yes, we Brits sure know how to preserve old trains!
what an amazing trip report first of all the seats and the vintage interior of the train that must have been what train travel was like 60 years ago and before the second you got to explore fort William and mallaig but the third and the best thing is the amazing scenery the west highland main line has to offer mountains valleys lakes small villages and the Glenfinnan viaduct especially on a steam train this is definitely the most scenic rail journey in the uk and one of the most scenic in the world i have to try out the west highland line someday
I'm short on time but I will watch the whole video later asap - clearly I think I'll prefer a 6-coach Mark 1-hauled steam (diesel or electric) locomotive over a shorter Class 156. Clearly much more comfortable! I love how the Mark 1 coaches are just silent - no diesel engines underneath, no electric motor sounds, nothing. Just like a luxury living room 🙂. Cheers for sharing 👍!
Have done this trip with Scot Rail, including the journey from Glasgow to Fort William. It is worth doing the whole line as there is some beautiful scenery between Glasgow and Fort William. Unfortunately you can't do all of it by Steam Train.
What an amazing train and spectacular scenery. You picked the right time of the year to see all those great colours! Although I have to admit, the clickety-clack was making me sleepy! I was afraid you weren't going to do your famous washroom tour and signature wave. Thanks for not disappointing!

What a wonderful scenery❤️ hats off to the authorities who have strived hard to maintain such a beautiful steam locomotive and those gorgeous coaches.👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏾
Thank you so much 😀
Dylan, my husband and I enjoy watching all of your videos (especially since we haven’t been able to travel during the pandemic), and we like your videos the best over other travel vlogs, but this is one of my very favorites. Scotland is on our list, and I hope someday (hopefully soon) we can experience this rail journey ourselves. In the meantime, keep up the great work and thank you for the videos you provide!
Thanks a lot 😁
This is for me ! What an amazing trip on a fantastic steam powered train. The train was as you mention impeccably clean and the scenery was some of the best you have shown us. This is definitely something to experience for everyone travelling to Scotland. In terms of pricing I had estimated based on tourist trains in North America the cost of your trip at about 150 euros and I was spot on but you got 2 seats for that- not bad. Great shot of the loco, a 4-6-0 and a beauty at that. This is now my new favourite train trip, Isle of Wight falls to number 2 !!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😁
I really enjoyed this video. The scenery was absolutely stunning. I'll bet the rest of Scotland is just as beautiful.
Thanks! Yes, there are a lot of beautiful trips around the Scottish Highlands.
Dylan, it's one of the nicest I've seen on your channel. The scenery is incredible, beautiful and the train a real legend. Very good job.
Thanks 😁
Really awesome! One of the best looking trains in the UK and the world!
hey Dylan this has got to be your best vidio yet. that train is priceless loved the engine . the sceenery was georgeous such a mixture of beautiful greens and golds on the trees well done buddy .
Thanks!
What a wonderful experience! A simple gourmet sandwich and pickle is a first clasd minimum. Amtrak’s food WAS very good and advocates are working to keep it that way after the pandemic.
If there is a criticism to be had I would complain that the journey is too quick, such a marvelous vista.
Thanks for the ride.
Well done Dylan! Somewhat envious over here in Thailand. Will try and do a steam trip here in 2021.But as they only tend to to run on bank holidays can get a bit busy.
A great new trip, thanks for sharing. I would have loved to have been there ... because ... I like Scotland.
Greetings from Jürgen
Great video, hope Scot Rail never change that steam experience.
Thanks 😁
Finally - no music or voice over. Just the sound of the wheels on the rails. :)
Charming engine and train cars, fabulous views...what a nice day trip! A little pricey, but in this case worthwhile. And yes, the clicketty-clacks and the chugging engine transcend time. Loved every minute of the video. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed 😁
I have just added this train trip to my bucket list! Wow! Thanks Dylan! Hope you're doing well & happy holidays!
Welp!! Add this train to the bucket list.....what a ride. What a video!
Thanks!
the jacobite seems to be a perfect reason to visit Scotland
Magical, absolutely magical. This ranks #1 on my list of your videos. Thank you so very much. I'll be traveling to Scotland next July, and can't wait to experience some of it's beauty in person.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy your trip to Scotland!
Absolutely stunning. The best yet.
I've on the Jacobite a few times in different seasons and its always an enjoyable trip but sometimes i wish the stop at Mallaig was a bit longer
Amazing scenery, hope to go there one day as that is where my grandfather is from (Scotland). Enjoyed the video a lot Dylan and enjoy how you present the content. No music, we get to hear everything and like that you're using subtitles to provide information. Subscribed! Keep up the great work and stay safe!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for stopping by 😁
beautiful train ride thru scotish countryside on the old train cars and spectular views; very clean train; I love the old lamps . nice snacks; and the food car was open; nice to see
Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you Dylan!!!
I've been waiting for a long time for you to ride a steam train!
Great scenery and informative video. I want to do this journey, hopefully one of these days. Thanks for taking us on a journey that is unparalleled! One of the most wonderful areas of the world...
Thanks!
Thank you, this was a most enjoyable little trip!
Glad you enjoyed 😁
I loved this video. I was lucky enough to go on this train in 2019 and loved every minute of it and watching this has made me want to go on it again. Great work again Pal 👍🏻
Thanks! Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip 😁
According to my Ian Allen A B C British Railways book (circa 1960) the number of The Lancashire Fusilier was 46119 so it has been re numbered to 45407. Great video thanks and yes the scenery is beautiful in that area.
Thanks!
Very cool. Very cool indeed. Great video! It's a delight to know that the Brits have the sense to preserve such trains.
Thanks!
Did you see the two locomotives bringing the overnight "Caledonian Sleeper" train from London Euston into Fort William at the start of Dylan's video? Oh, yes, we Brits sure know how to preserve old trains!
This has been added to my bucket list
what an amazing trip report first of all the seats and the vintage interior of the train that must have been what train travel was like 60 years ago and before the second you got to explore fort William and mallaig but the third and the best thing is the amazing scenery the west highland main line has to offer mountains valleys lakes small villages and the Glenfinnan viaduct especially on a steam train this is definitely the most scenic rail journey in the uk and one of the most scenic in the world i have to try out the west highland line someday
A back to the past experience. Delightful!
Brilliant vid on a fab journey, thank you for your time in making this happen.
Thanks 😁
This is great. Since I cannot do this in person this is the next best thing
Have done this trip with Scot Rail, including the journey from Glasgow to Fort William. It is worth doing the whole line as there is some beautiful scenery between Glasgow and Fort William. Unfortunately you can't do all of it by Steam Train.
Beautiful scenery and a steam train, heaven.
What an amazing train and spectacular scenery. You picked the right time of the year to see all those great colours! Although I have to admit, the clickety-clack was making me sleepy! I was afraid you weren't going to do your famous washroom tour and signature wave. Thanks for not disappointing!
Excellent video Dylan! Very calming to watch, love the scenery and heritage train set! Hope to visit one day too. Cheers!
