I love seeing this. Electric Flag practiced at our house in Marin county. Oh, the sad story of unfulfilled greatness. We did believe in the Love! And yes! Buddy miles was a great singer;- Harvey brooks, Nick the Greek and Hammond keys man & Bloomfield! What a great act. 🎭🥲
The pure joy and excitement on their faces is something to behold. That small moment in time is more precious than 500 dollar tickets to see any modern act these days.
Me too. I was a fan after hearing Hendrix's "Band of Gypsys" album. Mitch was great, but there was something about Buddy that just tightened everything up and made it funky as hell. After seeking out his solo material and falling in love with his 1971 live album (especially his Neil Young cover), I became an even bigger fan.
Saw Buddy about 1972’ really cool song-Great soul Groove. Bloomfield was at his creative genius during this period-branding into Jazz and soul. RIP Brothers ❤️🇺🇸
They were nervous because this was the Flag's first public performance. 50 years ago this weekend I had the good fortune to see this performance. I was already a fan of Bloomfield, Gravenites, Brooks, Goldberg, and then we got to see Buddy Miles for the first time and he blew us away.
Gawd... so GOOD. Loved the first Electric Flag album. What an extraordinary ollection of talent. I had the great fortune of seeing them live when I was 13 at the Shrine in LA, with Soft Machine, Blue Cheer, and some guy named Jimi something or other headlining. Can't believe my parents let me go!! February 1968.
Such a great performance! It has a warm 60’s soul type feel to it, remarkable how Buddy Miles manages those powerful vocals while pounding the drums to near destruction!
I'm from that era and some black dudes got what they called "a process". Chemicals were applied to the natural texture of a black person's hair to take the kink or curl out and straighten it for better styling options. James Brown, Wilson Pickett-going back to African-American entertainers like Cab Calloway...hell even early Al Sharpton got the process. media.vanityfair.com/photos/56fbeb6e74356cc5022e6adf/master/w_1600%2Cc_limit/reverend-al-sharpton-civil-rights-controversies-race-suzanna-andrews-02.jpg
@@IMCcanTWEESTED - it was also called a "conk." The chemicals used included lye, and sometimes people would get chemical burns on their head, or on their ears or neck, if it dripped.
Michael Bloomfield was an amazing talent who for being nervous is so soulful, warm, sincere, excited and just right on in his expression of harmony and love. For those who don't know, the Monterey Pop Festival was a year before Woodstock and a vanguard concert that introduced not only the "together" zeitgeist of the time but the California sound, Otis Redding, Hendrix, the Who, and Janis Joplin amongst many others to the world. It changed people's perception of life. The original film is a work of art. And Bloomfield was a producer, arranger, musicologist, and the greatest white blues guitar player in history. Go to "Blues on the Westside" or "Texas" to hear his incredible playing.
Michael got Bill Graham to include Black musicians (like BB King) to play at the Fillmore West which turned white audiences onto Black music (the way it should have always been imo. Michael was trained by some of the best Blues musicians on the planet like Muddy and Howlin' Wolf, and he was only 15-16 years old. A prodigy in my book.
I saw the perform in NYC 4 times. They were just killin it. Bands like this are missed. The energy and the spirit and the musicianship were there.I love to see the rest of this set
In addition to being a member of Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys, Buddy also recorded with Carlos Santana as well as his own Buddy Miles Express scoring with the classic “Them Changes”. BTW Buddy was also lead vocalist for the California Raisins, lol.
MAN we're really.. nervous MAN just(??), you know, we're really nervous but.. we love you all MAN, cause this is VERY groovy MAN, Monterey is VERY groovy MAN. This.. this is.. this is something MAN, this is.. this is our generation MAN. All you people.. we're all together MAN.. it's groovy, and dig yourselves, cause it's really groovy MAN. We're gonna do a song now um.. ah.. that's our single.. and it's ah.. it's called "Over loving you", and we're gonna do it now so..
Mike Bloomfield left us too soon. 1981 at the age of 37. Heard the news after a local gig with my HS band. Sad news. Mike Bloomfield belongs to the top 5 blues-rock guitarists of all time. MB is an American guitar hero.
The Monterey airport is next to the Fairgrounds...guessin' Mike just landed...still going to the jazz festival every year...can't beat the vibe that hangs over this part of the world.
Mike was a peaceful and loving soul. He’s so hyped-up on something in this clip, it’s painful for me to watch knowing how his life eventually ends. There are few absolute truths in life. One is that that drug addiction (heroin) is real and situations like Mike’s never end well.
I was lucky enough to survive a crippling 30 year heroin addiction and it feels so good at the time its nearly impossible to pull your way out of that box especially when one is young and life seems endless. It makes me so sad to see so many amazing people cut down by this horror.Make your last shot your last Shot thats my motto now.Ive never met a happy and content junkie.
Bloomfield, good Lord. I loved seeing this. Always loved this song and I just assumed it was Nick singing it-never thinking through that it was sung outside of Nicks normal range.
Electric Flag were ahead of their time and one of the earliest "super groups" to be formed in the late 1960s. Never fully realized, they predated Blood, Sweat And Tears and Chicago, with their jazzy, soulful, blues-inspired rock. When Mike (such a lovable guy) says the group was "really nervous," it is not an understatement. They are not in top form at Monterey (alas), but it is surprising how quickly they fizzled out. Love this almost frenetic version of Over-Lovin' You.
What Mike Bloomfield is saying here is absolute truth. The music being created by the Beatles and other current bands at that time was totally different then any popular recorded music. And it must have blown away youngsters who never heard anything like it before then.
Gosh,, the music man , the people were also a different class you could go to a show and meet a whole new set of decent sharing kind and loving people we all had the Beetles , Eric or Derek, Peter Green, Hendrix and Billy gibbons. Honestly we had it all
Went to a place in Santa Monica today called "Unurban Coffeehouse". Saw a documentary on Mike Bloomfield Directed by Bob Sarles called "Sweet Blues A Film about Mike Bloomfield"....I'm glad I now know about this man...
a 17 year old Buddy Miles who had just been stolen from the Wilson Pickett band by Bloomfield from Omaha on drums. Great Footage. Thanks for getting this on.
You should hear his introduction on "The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper". He grabs the mike from Bill Graham and goes into this rambling story about how he and Al got together. Great album (my dad has the original vinyl with the Norman Rockwell-painted cover). Mike missed the second night due to "insomnia" and Elvin Bishop stepped up to fill in

God... I've always love Buddy Miles' voice and drumming. He always beat the crap out of those drums. So tight, too.
I am with you on that, saw Buddy at the Fillmore with the Electric Flag shortly after Monterray

Only few people can sing like him and play drums simultaneously
I was looking for Bloomfield vids, but I'm really blown away by what a great singer Buddy was.
He wasn't a bad guitarist either...
Yeah, was going to remark on that. His voice is amazing in this clip.
Them Changes. One of my favorite albums.
@@rrandyman1 gotta love that hair too lol. wish these guys made more music then what they did. and buddy was good in every band he was in
Not only a great singer but a solid-ass drummer. That ain't easy singing and smackin' those skins like that, wow!
Michael was on fire , I'm 68 this guy was my idol . So sad how it ended up . But what an inspiration !
I’m 69 and I played his records ‘til the grooves turned white ! Michael was simply THE BEST !
Mike was such a sweetheart. One of the greatest guitarists of the twentieth century and yet a very humble cat.
indeed. Be Blessed
Thank you Mike! ❤🌫🖐
Mike Bloomfield was so awesome. I was fortunate to see him several times.
Saw Buddy about 1972’ really cool song-Great soul Groove. Bloomfield was at his creative genius during this period-branding into Jazz and soul. RIP Brothers ❤️🇺🇸
ŔIP BLOOM & Buddy Thank You

This is exactly what Michael was like all the time, I was lucky enough to know him, from a very young age..
+DuneAquaViva Best white Chicago blues player ever
I’m moved by his raw talent and at the same time mad as hell that drugs took that away from him (and us).
He's one of my favorite
I was fortunate enough to have the honor of playing with Mike and you are so right that's how he was ALL the time
Amazing Colorizing SRV was definitely not better.
Buddy,so so great.Missed beyond imagination.
Such an inspiration to many people Bloomfield's simply a legend 👍
Happy Birthday , Mike Bloomfield! The best of the Best still!
That is one hell of a performance. Buddy Miles kicks ass.
Saw the Butterfield Blues Band with Mike Bloomfield at the Trip in early '67. Didn't sleep for days after.
I saw them in 72 at the Fillmore. I'm still recovering.
I agree!
Buddy, so fantastic. played with Mike and Hendrix.
Buddy miles??
yep, played drums with two of the best guitarists of all time.
and with Buddy Guy too. the man was everywhere :D
farber2 love Buddy!
My two favorite guitarists of all time, Buddy worked with them both, Mike and Jimi.
Loved these cats !...Such a great original Bay Area band !! thank you for posting.
The great Buddy Miles, Love the hair do.
That was his Doo while with Wilson Pickett, before EF recruited him, Story goes that Wilson came looking with gun drawn. 🤓

Monterey was 2 yrs. before Woodstock
mrJimCharles Thanks for the correction. Yes Monterey was in 1967, the film, Monterey Pop, was released in 1968. Amazing time for music.

"TEXAS" will always be the greatest blues guitar piece of all time.
This is just so good..... !! I can't stop watching it
Interesting artifact, and it's a treat to see a live version of a track from one of my 10 Favorite Rock LP's of all time.
Wow, never knew about this footage. Would love to see more of Mike Bloomfield!
Dig yourself man because it's really groovy.

It's not just BROOMFIELD but the whole band - brilliant, fantastic!
Bernhard Kolb Haha, BROOMFIELD.
One of the greatest band in the funk, blues, soul area !!! I dig it man Hey man !!!
Mindblowing....creativity...gushing of the stage!!!!
Wtf whit the singer his a beast , my god his good. Bloomfield definitely needs or deserves a better place in history of music.
The singer/drummer is the great Buddy Miles, who played with Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsys!
The singer is Nick Gravenites and was a childhood friend of Michael's in Chicago. Agree that Nick has a great voice.
In addition to being a member of Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys, Buddy also recorded with Carlos Santana as well as his own Buddy Miles Express scoring with the classic “Them Changes”. BTW Buddy was also lead vocalist for the California Raisins, lol.

Thank you, Mr.Cline ! I hadn't seen this outtake of The Electric Flag yet. Rilly Groovy !!!
Sounds like a freaking studio recording!!!! Mike , Buddy and the 2 Harveys,,,the dear Lads at their best. Thats what you call "Sockin It to Em"!!!
When I was 12 years old, I called Michael the Master of the Telecaster. Nothing between his tele and the amp. Pure Fender sound. Love it.
Albert Collins might object to that. ;)
I love Bloomfield's mannerisms,,, man.
What a fantastic group. Bloomfield said he wanted the music to be distinctively American and Groovie. He succeeded so very well.
I just found one of the best videos on youtube
1:03 Michael Bloomfield gives a great speech about his generation. "Raised on Beatles, raised on genius music."
Awesome song. Awesome band. So much talent.
Awesome footage of a killer band. Bloomfield's level of excitement is wonderful to see. Buddy Miles could sing! Wow.
The great Electric Drug Flag Band with the great Buddy Miles, sadly a heroin addict but one hell of an American! Love you Buddy you were so awesome!
Yes!!!!!!! Finally. I am so very thankful for this, and yet so greedy for more.
Great treat from the past, thanks!
Energy at the highest level!!! How much Janis learned from Buddy’s vocals that day!!!
