As astonished as I am that you've never heard this song, all I can say is, welcome to Bluegrass, son. This song is an absolute legend, and I never get tired of seeing Paul Schaffer, of all people, knocking it out with Steve Martin and the immortal Earl Scruggs. I embraced my Appalachian ancestry because, I figured, with music this good, it can't be all bad.

What really makes a group of experienced musicians like this shine is understanding that if a single mistaken note is played on an acoustic instrument - It Stands Out Like. Sore Thumb- INSTANTLY.
With electric instruments you can cover up a mistake, BUT NEVER ON ACOUSTIC.
    NEVER.

An absolute favorite of mine. When I was just a young tyke, my father watched 'Flatt and Scruggs' every Saturday night on the Martha White Show. Loved Earl Scruggs and grew to love Steve Martin as a banjo player. Growing up in Nashville, I've met a few of those on stage and they're just great people. I still see Marty and Harry from time to time.

The Earl Scruggs banjo style made Bluegrass what it is today. One of the best examples of Earl's style being carried forward is J. D. Crowe (who recently passed away). He took the style and added much more to it. So many other great banjo players use this style of playing and add their own spin on it.

Bluegrass has its roots in Scottish and Irish folk music. The fast rhythm comes from the reels and jigs that were played at quick tempo so dancers could show off their best footwork. The original dance-offs.
