  • In 1772 Frederick the great annexed Royal Prussia. This was a province of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. After its establishment it retained its autonomy until it was fully integrated into the Kingdom of Poland. Their Parliament was therefore incorporated into the Parliament of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After its annexation Royal Prussia became a province of West Prussia. From that point on the then King in Prussia, Fredrick II, declared himself officially King of Prussia. Prior to the Hohenzollern family being the Kings in Prussia they were titled as Dukes.
In last week's video we met the Queen Consorts in Prussia, so today we will continue with the wives of the Kings of Prussia.

Frederick the Great didn't want this marriage and Elisabeth suffered greatly under his cold behaviour. but as years went by she managed to make the best out of it and enjoyed a quiet, peaceful life

How is that Frderick William II married while being married to Frederica? Curious nonetheless... I see in queen Louise physical features that many of her descendants seemed to have. Thank you for the video!

Martin Luther approved of bigamy, and talked about it's value in lieu of divorce. There was a high profile case w Luther & a bigamist German Landgrave. Happened right around the time of King Henry VIII's annulment w Catherine of Aragon, so I think there was more desire for flexibility in marriage. He used Luther's approval & this court case to legitimize his choice. It was a somewhat established (although rare and not well regarded) option to take a morganatic wife.
