- This video is to help Gen 2 Toyota Prius Owners (2004-2009) Remove their dashboard and repair the capacitor that often fails.
*use the gear Icon to slow down the speed in faster areas*
Here is a link to the capacitor I use and also a list of tools needed to do the job.

It would've been nice if your video actually showed what you were doing to remove the dash, we kind of need to know that BEFORE anything else. I'm sure somebody else has a video somewhere on how to, or maybe you can post a separate video if you ever get bored since it appears you filmed the whole process anyhow, I just can't make sense of the lightspeed video. Thanks for the effort though.
Thank you so much for this! I’ve been putting this off for a while cause it looks time consuming but I just need to bite the bullet.
In case anyone else wants to be lazy and not do the repair, I usually get the dash to come on by flicking the lights and brights on and off 3x and fully pressing the brake 3x. Repeat as necessary till you hear the electrical clicking and then turn the car on.
When I tried this the dash lights came on but also the red triangle of death and other never before noticed lights!
I'm going to attempt this in the near future. There's another guy on RUclips with a video for this similar to yours, and between the two I have a lot of confidence now that I can do this on my day off and have the problem fixed with plenty of time to spare before having to drive to work. Thank you so much for your dedication to providing others with the information needed to fix our own vehicles! You're saving us thousands of dollars in the long run with what you do.
Did you get it done and was it successful?
@@Tonisuperfly Yes I ended up doing the job a few months ago and it works perfectly still. So happy I did it!
@@4leafmetal looks like I’m going to have to do it too. Thanks for the reply!
@@4leafmetal Are you still happy with the repair?
@@4leafmetal What size capacitor did you use?
Thanks for confirming where the negative side goes
I really like this video very informative! So I've had the same problem with my lights not coming on, sometimes they have come on and I can't go into gear, and sometimes I have not been able to turn my car off. From the research I have done all of these problems definitely seems to have to do with the dashboard control module. Will that same capacitor being bad cause all of these problems or it could it be more problems in my dashboard control module? I also appreciate the time lapse however it would be nice to have it a little bit slower to better see the steps of removing the dash and everything. As somebody who has been a professional mechanic 20 years ago and now continue to fix my own vehicles removing a dash is a little overwhelming as I know how easily they can break and be hard to put back together. Anyways just a thought that maybe providing a slow down time lapse or even a another video without the time lapse could be very helpful for many non professionals. Thanks again.
Thank you for this video! I'm going to work on this next weekend!
Thanks for the vid. Working on this with my pops right now!
Right on, it’s super easy!
Great video, thanks. I have to replace the immobilizer ECU or clean the connectors (light on the dash no longer flashes) but I am not sure where exactly it is located. Is in accesable behind the part right above the steering wheel? Hope you can help. Good luck with you channel, liked and subscribed.
Super Video. Thanks. Where are you located at and what would the cost be for this repair on my Prius thanks chuck
Can you clarify if the issue was just dash lights out or the vehicle would not start as well. I'm having electronic issues where the battery just needs a short jolt of power and then it is good. I even had the whole dash light up and fans go after I had removed the key and left the vehicle. Thanks!
The noise at 7:40 scared the crap out of me
I believe it was a peacock
So I was debating on doing this myself due to time and availability crunch. I decided to take my Prius in to a shop and I told them what I thought the problem was with my instrument cluster not coming on and also the car has the issue where it doesn’t power all the way down. They came back with. I need a new cluster and computer for a total of about $1700. Do you think that is possible or do you think they are just trying to get over on me?
That is ridiculous. They are gouging you.
thanks so much! it went a little bit fast on the time lapse. How easy is it for a cautious beginner who follows steps? My prius dash only turns on when you unplug and plug the 12 volt in so i assume this is the prob. if so, this will save me at least $80. Im more worried about soldering and putting everything back. I have people who could potentially help. thanks! oh and roughly how long did it and or will it take?
My first time EVER doing this took me 4 hours. It is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. There are some tricky things but overall its not too bad. just keep track of where stuff goes.
My first time (15-year auto tech) took me 2 hours. Now I can do it in 30 minutes. This is most likely your issue.
How do you hook a stereo amplifier up to the eve batteries
EV batteries?
@@TheHybridGuy I'm guessing he means EV batteries or traction battery
Any idea if this module also might prevent the car from shutting all the way down? The module has been repaired with the capacitor replacement and had an upgrade mod to the latest revision.
Yes it can prevent the car from a quick one click turn off.
@@TheHybridGuy it’s not just the one click turn off everything shuts down except for the mfd and the aux power outlet. I’ve tried pulling all the relays so far but when I turn it off, even if I do the hold the button in for 5 sec hard shutdown the mfd and aux power stay on. If I open a door I get a constant beep from the dash area, if I close the door I get 3 beeps from under the hood. If I try to lock the doors using the driver door switch it immediately unlocks the doors again.
Even with both the fobs more than 100 feet away it does this. Several of the symptoms look like it thinks a key fob is still in the car. I’ve got a detailed post in the gen2 area on Prius chat.
It’s puzzler. I’m disabled so I can’t get under the dash to unplug the ecu’s. I’m looking for a good flow chart/ diagram of the startup, shutdown procedures to see if I can isolate it. I don’t get any codes using 3 different iPhone scanners, my android setup running hybrid assistant and torque or my 10 year old version of techstream.
Any suggestions, I really don’t want to take it to the dealer for a $1,000 diagnosis charge to find out it’s the dash model, the mfd or the immobilizer.
@@texaspowermanwhat did you find out? I just had my high voltage battery and 12V replaced, they just said it’s not shutting all the way down either… and I have the bad capacitor issue.
My cars still down, I had surgery scheduled and worked on it until the last day. It will be a week or two before I’m back at it.
The closest I got is it’s the acc relay or the ecu itself. Something is telling the ecu that it’s not in a ready to shutdown state. If you pull the power, it automatically comes back up in the last state so there is no way to reset it.
It could very well be a signal from the combo meter, why I haven’t a clue what they were thinking.
If you find out please post.
I have to ask - what is the back to the future readout beneath the stereo head unit there?
@@djbills not sure what you mean?
@@TheHybridGuy All the gauges/readouts under the stereo, by the shifter. Visible at 2:00 mins. I can't quite tell what year his car is going back to, and the bigger question is can the Prius hit 88mph? 88mpg maybe. (I'm joking but genuinely curious what all that is) 😃
Shame the important details of taking the dash out are fastforwarded over so quickly that it's not possible to catch exactly what is being taken apart in what sequences.
It’s relatively straightforward. Biggest things are getting all the trim parts out of the way.
@marku2805 Use the Gear icon to slow the video down
Straight forward for someone like you who is skilled, but certainly not for someone like me who has never every done any kind of work on a car.
I live in a rural area and there isn't anyone who works on hybrids withing 150 miles. Yup, I'm a typical old lady, who's done nothing but change the tailgate switch, thanks to RUclips showing me how. People like me need step by step details. Also anything that takes any hand strength, old broads like me simply can not do. @@TheHybridGuy
You can slow the video down to see the dash removal by going to your settings in RUclips and changing playback speed.
You must have said that before you slowed the video down. Frames are missing when it's slowed, meaning someone like me, who is NOT a mechanic at all, miss little things that are important to see.
@@jazzcattno, I just slowed it down now and there are no frames missing. Did you use the little cog icon when you hover over the video and change the playback speed to 0.5 or 0.25 even?
OK it looks like frames are missing because of the speed. It's jerky. I tried both 1/2 speed and 1/4 speed. Can't see enough to know what you are doing. When you look at it, you know exactly what's happening because you were doing it and have done it before. I haven't, and don't. @@Tonisuperfly
Mine fell apart as if it were made of potato chips.
Where can i get the capacitor and what is the cost
amzn.to/3QJgOvI $6
Where are you located?
Washington state
@@TheHybridGuybummer, I was hoping you were in Florida. I'm having a hard time finding a place that will fix the problem.
@@gilpvfin868 I know the feeling. I live in a rural area of South Eastern Kentucky.
Level of difficulty on a 1-5 scale? 47! I can't see anything on my MFD in the daytime. No point even looking.
How long should this take to do for a normal person? Not a pro and not the old lady. lol
My first time doing it took me 2 hours. The best time i've been able to do it in was 35 min in good weather.
Good - Time Lapse is too fast to follow steps. Make them half as fast, please.
I just set it to slow down. click the gear icon at the bottom and select your speed.
