GREAT Video. I bought a 2006 Prius with navigation, and the Multi-Function Display was so far out of calibration that I had to touch the very top of the screen to press a button on the bottom of the screen. I read up on how to access the service menu but couldn't get to the second service screen because you have to press a MENU button at the top of the screen, which was impossible. I bought a new digitizer from Amazon and took the MFD apart. I had a few extra wires due to the navigation feature, but everything went well. It is probably impossible to get the old digitizer off without cracking it, but it doesn't matter since it is no good anyway. I used a single-edge razor blade and still cracked it multiple times. I put everything back together and the display & digitizer works like new. I didn't even have to do any calibration; it's perfect.

Post mortem of my repair:
1. Take a pictures as you disassemble the MFD. take pictures as you remove each bracket/housing as it can be come disorienting disassembling it and reassembling.
2. Be careful taking a blade to the separate the screen from the digitizer, a box cutter and slow steady pressure worked for me. I scraped off the remaining adhesive after
3. When you take off the vent panels on the left and right of the mfd, pull laterally (horizontal) away from the dash, the aged plastic on my prius did not have a lot of flex when i tugged upward and it cracked.
First clear video on the subject. What a pain in the ass this is to do. Thank! I will try it on the next one I am going to do.
Mine is a 2008 Prius and so excited to have found this video and now I can give the new digitizer "the finger" and and can change settings. In order for me to remove the bezel with buttons there was a small wire that needed to be removed. Glad I had the patience to remove the 2 bolt rear cover and then the circuit board 2 screws. With the bracket above the connector removed I had enought wire slack to unbolt the bracket and then remove the 2 connectors by pulling up. Then the bezel with buttons could be moved out of the way.
I am super excited to give this a try on my 07 prius. MFD turns on fine and everything but I have been slowly losing my touch capacity. As of right now no matter where I touch it always registers it in one corner. Did a bit of digging and this is the first resource explaining possible fix to it without replacing the entire MFD. Gonna give this a shot and feeling pretty confident about it all now. Thank you!!

Hi there! I don't really have a touch screen issue with my 2008 Prius' MFD but the Climate button (upper left) has been sticking that I have to push it so hard just to make my temp adjustments. Would I need to replace just the outer frame or the whole MFD to resolve that stubborn button issue?

Hi Pete. Great videos!! I just subscribed and liked this video because I need you to answer a simple question. I want to replace the little storage cubby below the radio. My dog broke it one day. This is the closets I've come to seeing how to access the part to remove and replace it. I found one for $25, just wondering if in this video (at 2:41) it's as easy as sliding out the assembly and swapping it out. Any idea on that? Thanks for being one of those dudes who makes the world a better place by immortalizing "how stuff works" on the internet. I love people and the internet because of this very phenomenon, and I only lament that I don't have time to do it myself (and a big DIYer). Peace!
It’s pretty easy just requires removing more plastic. Keep digging and you will see what you need to remove

I have the unit out of the car and am wondering where to get quality replacement parts. There are many sources with a wide range in prices. Some on the big retailer say there is a rainbow effect &/or that the re[placement failed soon after install and warranty ended.

My 2009 MFD works capacitive-wise but is very dim. Even when the light control sits at maximum.

I have a 2005 which had some kind of short in the amp or radio that put it out of commission. Now the MFD isn’t visible in daylight but at night you can just see that the display is working faintly at the corners and edges. Not responding to touch, but the screen will change appropriately with pressing the audio/climate/display/info buttons. You can tell it’s trying to work because the writing and graphics are faintly there, tinted reddish, but only on the edges. If the digitizer is damaged, would it obscure the screen in this way?
I have the same problem. the touch screen works, however the screen is very hard to see in the daylight. it is the digitizer or the LCD display behind it?

I can get by useing the controls on the steering wheel. Have been doing this for a long time with no problems.

I have a question. What’s to stop me from, instead of just replacing the screen, putting a screen that has CarPlay capabilities in its place? I know there are other ways, like buying the GROM stereo and hooking it up, but why can’t I take the framing off and then put a different stereo in there (as long as it’s the same size as the other screen) would the wiring be difficult? Or is it an issue with the framing?
Excellent question. If the screen that has CarPlay and all that integrated into it isn’t set to work with the other parts of the car (I.e. HVAC) you will lose functionality of some systems.

Ok now I have another problem. I replaced my digitizer, but when I tested it, the touchscreen isn’t working. How do I troubleshoot it? I put the ribbon cable in right I think
About how much is it to replace the the screen in your video you said you paid about $60 to make the repair I have touch control but my screen goes off and on after a few days it'll come back on for a little while then I'll go all black raido goes off but I can push the radio button the radio will work but my screen is black
My screen is going on and off more off than on. My radio goes off by itself sometimes when. the car is turned off and when I turn it on the screen comes up. I am hesitant to buy a new one only because of the cost but because this is the 3rd one I've had installed (new.) My car is a Prius is a 2008 hybrid and I just installed rehab. battery 2 wks. ago. Is it possible that I have an electrical problem in the system and if so how much might it cost?? Where else might I find help??
Same issue here but I have yet to replace anything yet. Also. The passenger side window won't go up with the passenger switch now, I have to do it from driver side. Is your screen flashing between prius and Lexus logo?!

I have 2006 Prius that had an unresponsive Multifunction Display (MFD). With the help of your video I ordered and replaced the screen. The display now has vertical lines and no information.
The buttons work and the touch screen is responsive. I suspect the metal tabs inside the MFD are not making contact where they should or are making contact where they should not. Any help is appreciated.
Did you solve it? I have the same issue. Just vertical lines on the MFD, sometimes they go crazy and show vertical and horizontal lines but it does seem to respond to pressing buttons.
I have 2009 Toyota Prius, its touch screen stays blank, sometimes comes back on for few seconds and then dies again. Any idea what is going on ? Also, Is there any way to just disable it ? I prefer to fix it, but If I can't fix it then I would just like to disable it. Thanks.

I replaced the digitizer screen but everything is still unresponsive. Any chance the MFD will work without the digitizer screen?
It will not because the digitizer is what sends the signal to the unit to let it know where you are touching.

Will this fix a dark spot in the middle of the display? I think its from the car staying in direct sun.

I have a 2009 Prius and the mfd will turn on and then the whole screen will go black and then sometimes the screen will glitch and there’s lines across it. Do you think this will fix that issue? Sometimes the screen won’t come back on for a couple of days.
Sounds like a failing power supply.

Do you know what would be causing a black screen? The screen randomly turned on and faded out whole driving and now is just black. I've read it's the soldering and capacitors, do you know what capacitors it may be? I checked the fuse it's still good.

Hi, I have a question... If my screen work by touch but is a dark color so hard to see. Would changing out the screen take care of the problem? Or is the problem deeper? I can see some of the screen around the edges but the discoloration blocks most of everything. Thank you
Sounds like a physical screen issue.

@@designmustangsales7157 Hi, I tried changing the screen for a new one, but the issue was deeper than the screen. When I took it apart it was dark and had some cracks behind the screen. I ended up finding a used complete unit on eBay for $150 and it works perfectly. 👍🏽

You certainly can! Usually it’s just the touch digitization that goes out. But you can 100% do whatever you want.

@@ormonddude If the screen is dark there is probably something deeper that is wrong. If the touch function is not working it is the digitizer.
@@TheHybridGuy RUclips keeps taking my comments and IDK why - The Touch Function is Fine the Screen Turns Dark from a sort of Burn in, it's a common issue in Hotter Climates I tried to post a Picture link from Prius Chat but youtube seems to not like that

What if your mfd only powers up occasionally but then immediately powers down, been that way since I got it, all functions still work HVAC, radio and hybrid system, no CELs.

Hi - my MDF displays Lexus occasionally and then it simply works for a few minutes then it goes blank not recording miles, or charge etc.. I remember having replaced the digitizer once for this problem, it did not get fixed, but I had forgotten and just replaced the hybrid batt and 12v battery, trying to get it running again, then realized the MDF is not working. When I replaced the digitizer, the end of the RIBBON was to the opposite side (angle) of the original - I had to twist it a bit to get it in....I guess it worked, but still have the same problem - I want to try one more time before I junk the car, DO YOU HAVE THE PART NUMBER that you used EXACTLY or where you bought yours from so that I can buy from them hopefully get this fixed once and for all - I really do not feel comfortable using someone else's used MDF in my car, now knowing what issues that might have.

Just finished installing the same digitizer you have linked in the parts needed section on our 2006. I bought the digitizer from your Amazon link. Installation went about as well as yours. Hardest part was removing the old digitizer slowly and carefully, but it still cracked. My question for you though, after I installed the digitizer and reassembled the MFD, the screen has a “rainbow” effect when the screen is on.. Did you experience the same thing on the final installation? It doesn’t appear so in your video, but sometimes pictures/videos of screens are deceptive. Im wondering if I got a bad part from Amazon.
Also, my screen original had a major calibration issue, buttons on the bottom of the screen were only pressed if you touched the top of the screen. And any button from the middle up were non-existent as their calibration would be up towards the windshield. The replacement digitizer fixed the issue perfectly and on,y cost $35 rather than $250 for a used MFD on Amazon.
Usually the rainbow effect is the protected plastic on the front you have to peal off of the digitizer. They have that on originally to keep it clean for shipment.
