Logitech MX Master Scroll Wheel FIX

- My scroll wheel got stuck between ratcheting and free-wheeling modes after only about 5 days of use.
So I took it apart and found the problem. The fix is easy! More Info ↴↴

If you don't have a TORX driver: amzn.to/1TUd5Dr
Even with this issue, it's already my favorite mouse of all time: amzn.to/1ThoDBi
Update (6/16/16): The issue came back after about 4 weeks. I fixed it again the same way. If it starts happening more often I'll try using loc-tite or something.
7 years later and you're still saving lives! Wheel ratchet died halfway through work, watched your video, had my mouse apart, fixed and back together in 5 minutes. You, my good sir, are an absolute legend, thank you.
After using this mouse for about...five years? The scroll wheel suddenly couldn't switch between the two scroll modes. Thank you for this tutorial!! Saved my mouse and money!!
8 years later and my mouse finally required this fix, thank you for the clear demonstration. Unfortunately, I slightly ripped one of the feet while pulling them off but the mouse wheel feels amazing now.
You definately set the standards of good tutorial videos. Good graphic, no shitty music, nice explanation about everything (how you do it and why). Thank you for helping me get my mouse back.
A little sidenote though, the mouse MUST BE powered on for the switch function to work! I didnt know this, so i thought i did something wrong for about 20 minutes (thought the button was positioned wrong) untill i tried powering it on while testing - that worked..
Anyway, big thumbs up for your video.
As soon as I clicked on this video, my mouse started working normally again... it`s magic!
Same thing here :D
Absolutely the same here wow
10 seconds after I read your comment ratchet activated lol
Same happened to me lol
Ditto! :)
8 years after your video I fixed an MX Master 2S in minutes thanks to this. Thank you so much!
First of all: Perfect tutorial with great quality.
Second: I'm probably a bit dense, but was about to open this mouse up to fix the stuck free-wheeling mode. Then I "accidentally" clicked the rectangular button right above the scroll wheel, and it fixed it. Turns out the whole point of that button is to disengage the ratcheting functionality for those who wanna leave it in free-wheel mode, lol.
LMAO here I am thinking my mouse broke again (sent back the first master 3 back to Amazon because of this reason), and all I needed to do was click a button to reingage the ratchet mode 😭
Hahaha, exactly!
Apparently I Did Not Retain This Information From 3 Years Ago. Thanx Again Renck!!!
U R The Real MVP!!!!!!! I Was Just About 2 Click Amazon & Thought Let me Check RUclips 1st.
Thanks so much. Based on you showing where this mechanism is, I was able to correct the issue without having to open the mouse at all, I just put some firm pressure on that area, and firmly pressed the button in the middle of the mouse in which is further back towards the palm from the school wheel. This re-engaged the mechanism and it's now back working as it did before. Wouldn't have been able to figure that out without this video, so thanks for taking the time.
Thank you i did this too it was an awesome fix!!
That worked for me too! Thank you
You are a hero! My mouse got knocked off my desk and must have dislodged the key piece, but pressing the top button harder just managed to fix it back to normal! No need to find a tiny screw driver!
what kind of sorcery is this. IT F*KING WORKED !!!!
Happened for the first time after 7 or 8 years of owning the mouse. This video is still helpful so many years later
this is what a tutorial video should be. showing how to solve the issue while explaining how it occured. no EDM intros, no asking to buy tool kits.
BTW, I didn't have any tools to open the mouse up and so the way I solved this exact same problem is by percussive maintenance. I just banged it right-side-up against my mousepad until the function worked again. Your video showed me that this might work. Don't recommend doing it the same way though, might result in the usual problems that arise from percussive maintenance: breaking it even further.
Thanks to your video, it took me not even ten minutes to do this fix, and two of those minutes were me finding my T5 screwdriver.
I got Logitech to change my mouse because of this problem, and after one week with the new one I got the same exact problem :( Can't believe they actually released it... thanks for the video, I'll give it a try!
contact logitech and share this video to show them the problem ,maybe logitech will fix this kind of nasty thing by release the new version of this mouse .
Wow! This worked perfectly. I only bought the mouse a month ago (April '16) and within a couple of weeks I had a feeling the ratchet was going / had gone. It wasn't until I tried a co-workers mouse and realised how broken mine was. I was about to return it, found out I'm on day 31 of purchasing it so Amazon won't accept! Hunted around to look in forums, with everyone complaining about it, with no fix. This video has saved me writing a very angry e-mail to Logitech :) So strange that it's such a common issue though. I had a MX Performance for about 6 years with no issues! Thankyou for the great video :)
i had a Mx revolution for ages and no issues either... 1 month and my Mx master is wheeling free
day 31? really, come on Andy, retailers policies have no power over your rights.
Just tell Amazon to replace or refund, item is faulty, if they won't then start a small claims case, (give them notice of this in writing - hint they will refund then.)
Item has a multi-year warranty from Logitech, Amazon, being the retailer, is who your contract is with, so they have to honor it.
You also have other rights as a consumer - fit for purpose and last a reasonable length of time etc...
Don't let retailers walk all over you.
You are truly a life saver. I almost given up and bought a new one. Found out had similar problems at the same spot. Not exactly the same. The rotaty was a bit skewed, only need to rotate it, didnt have to press or anything.
Any consolation, the ratchet lasted 2 years on mine. I was close to looking at replacing it until I saw on your video how easy it was to fix it. Much appreciated.
Excellent description and fix! Actually, one of the best and clearest RUclips "how to's" I've seen. Great camera work, too! Thanks.
Thanks man! I've have my MX Master since 2016 and just started doing this. You saved me like $100 bucks, and the environment a bit of e-waste!
Never had this issue with my MX but I did want to take it apart to give it a deep cleaning after years of home use. I would never have known how to take the MX apart without a video like this, so thanks hugely!
Xxxcc
video is still clutch 6 years later! Just fixed my MX Master 3s for Mac. Thanks bro!
Thank you for your video, it was well done. I think the issue many people may have is the fact that this mouse doesn't come with written instructions as to what that square top button is for. That was the case for me, once I saw you pressing a mysterious button off camera, I understood what that button was for and was able to figure out why my scroll wheel lost its resistance.
Another Tip: I had to repeat the procedure 3 times because the "Smart Shift" function was left ON in the Utility software. Once I turn on the mouse, it got stuck in free-wheeling again. Had to turn OFF "Smart Shift" in the software AND un-assign Mode Shift button from the middle button for it to stay fixed in Ratcheting mode.
Thanks for the instructions!
Wanted to share with others that I thought my MX was having this same problem. However, I realized that the square button on top of the MX above the flywheel is actually an engage/disengage button for the mechanism described in this (excellent) video. Press it once, and it fully disengages the ratcheting feature for full free-wheeling mode regardless of flywheel speed. Press it again and it allows you to switch between the two as normal. I had no idea until I thought I "broke" the ratcheting function of my mouse that I could actually toggle between the two!
Whoa, this was exactly my problem, you just saved me a ton of work!! I thought I broke it but it was just a matter of clicking a button XD
GRANDE! Thank you, mate! I was thinking the mouse got broken in 5 days.
I had the identical problem and was searching to a solution when I fell onto your nice video. I have an easier solution I figured out. Instead of disassembling the mouse, turn it upside down on a soft but firm surface (I use my mouse pad) and lightly but firmly knock it onto the pad. It takes only a few knocks to reengage the ratch mechanism.
For such a premium priced mouse, Logitech SHOULD design and build this mechanism at a higher quality level so that it is reliable.
it worked for like a second lmfao will try again tho
Thanks that works pretty well.
Thanks, I can confirm this works!
Was just about to try this, i didn't even have to knock it! I just turned it upside down and I heard a click and now it's ratcheting again. Thanks!
Omg I thought I'd look in the comments to see if anyone had any better solutions before I went off to find a screwdriver to open the mouse and probably break in cause I don't know how circuitry works. I'm kind of upset I didn't think of doing this first. Thanks for the tip, it definitely beats (excuse the pun) trying to open it up.
Don't be like me and take apart your MX Master 3S before first checking to see if it's a firmware issue. The 3S has a very different construction for the scroll wheel. There is a small black button underneath the scroll wheel that toggles it between ratcheting and freewheel via an electromagnet. When I dropped my mouse shortly after getting it, I accidentally disabled the ratcheting mode without realizing it. Just press that button to turn it back on.
So you DID open it up?
This is a great video! Thank you. I didn't have the special screwdriver to take my mouse apart BUT, after watching the video where you showed that the little lever is stuck in the wrong place, I thought, "What if I bang it on a soft surface?" And presto, it works again. THANIK. YOU!!
2024 now and this video its just perfect. i have this mouse for maybe 6 years now and this is the first time i have an issue. and guess the issue :))) thank you , you saved me really
I've been having the scroll issue for the past 2 years. Thought of finally caving in to purchase the mx master 2. Came across this vid and it completely solved all my issues. Legend. Thank you for this.
I watched your video, which was great btw! Then pushed the scroll wheel and the square button at the top multiple times simultaneously and kind of shocked the mouse forward and that must've dislodged the scroll wheel mechanism you were showing... and now I'm back with a ratchet scroll wheel. Thanks for the breakdown!
this video is just as useful as the day it was uploaded. Thanks!
I was about to retire my mx 25, for wheel spin issue, but i said lets search about it maby find solution, your video help alot and my mouse work again, thank you
It took me under 5 minutes to repair my mouse after watching this video.
Thank you!
My god, this worked perfectly, that's exactly what it was on mine. Amazing video. This is peak RUclips right here. Thank you very much.
The pads has a tendency to split in two, so you got to be really carefully to get both layers. Anyway, fixed my problem too. The thumb up is well deserved. Big TNX.
I also use that super-slick PTFE teflon tape over my pads. So each time I have to do this, I am wasting that tape -- and that shit ain't cheap!
You're definately a legend. My mouse was fixed within 2 mins.
Life saver. The smooth scrolling was driving me crazy. Thank you.
Dude you are a lifesaver, I got MX 2 a few months ago and this happened today, the mechanism is slighly different but the idea is still the name , just need to reposition the little nugget. Awesome video
I have an old G700 that works fine (I have replaced the battery once) and I got this problem after moving the mouse to a friend's place so I thought about banging its flat side against my hand and PRESTO! No unscrewing, nothing. It is now fixed! Thanks for the idea.
Just did the same thing on my MX Master, right out of the box it was on freewheeling only. Easy fix and now it works great!
Cannot thank you enough for this video..thought my dead mouse was headed for the re-cycle bin until I saw the video and fixed it!!
Found this video after searching for how this mech works, now I also learned that there is a potential problem coming up for me.. So if it happens, you've teached me how to fix it :) Thanks!
I've had my MX Master for around 9 months and it's slowly been starting to loose the ratchet click on the mouse wheel. Just followed this video and it's working like new again. Thumbs up here :)
So awesome. I picked one of these up as a refurb for $35.00 and it had this problem. Fixed it, and turned off the smart shift since I like the ratchet. Also re-assigned the button on top. Nice!
Amazing, had my mx master in a drawer for over a year then after getting a new laptop needed a mouse and decided to see if I could fix it. One 8 year old youtube video later and I have saved a bunch of money for 5 minutes of work :)
You need more subs! The production quality of this video is amazing! Great job!
Man, I can't even begin to thank you for your great tutorial, as I could't not find any maintenance store willing to give it a shot to solve this stupid glitch, I was so close to put it away until I found your video.... thank you so much.
Thanks for the video. Thanks to you showing how this mechanism works, I found an easier solution. Just bang the mouse onto the desk a few times and that fixed it.
Thanks for this. My 4 yr old mouse scrolled normally again but I can feel the scrolling almost being loose again. A few days after I "fixed" it, it went back and I figured it's time for another mouse. This time not from Logitech and doesn't have a switch for free scroll and normal scrolling.
Wow what a great video! Didn't even know this mouse had a free-spin/ratchet wheel switch until I came upon this! (I watched another video and the guy said to send it back for a new one... Then I read a comment that basically called him an idiot... brought me here). Really cool feature and great explanation of how the mechanisms work inside! Thumbs up, guy!
Dude! THANK YOU! I actually had Logitech replace mine due to this issue, now i realize i can fix the new one they sent me that stopped working with the same issue AND the old one! You rock!
I'm so happy you made this video. I would not have had the patience to figure this out by myself but I do have the patience to get in there and perform this fix which I did quite successfully.
my friend, I am grateful to you
I have Logitech Anywhere 2 and have been using it for 4 months.
but i realized there was a problem and i didn't solve it
but not a mechanical problem
it just wasn't active as I didn't hold it down in full round mode
I understand this now
and I held it hard and the mode was activated
Press the wheel to switch between the two scrolling modes: high speed mode and click mode.
But by chance I watched your video and suddenly
I held the fashion hard with my hand and now it's fine
good
God bless you
love from istanbul :)
Didn't realize I'd have to be a trained and licensed brain surgeon to get my mouse to work.
What a champ! Thanks so much for this - worked like a charm - that tiny doo hicky looks big in your video but is so bloody tiny! The legendary MX Master scrollwheel is alive and well again. Thanks again! :)
2024 and I just fixed my mouse. Thank you for the clear and easy to follow instructions.
Which one you got, 3s ?
Today, mine stopped working. Scroll wheel is just spinning freely no Ratchet now.
If you dont care about the free scrolling then use this tip:
Go to logitech options on your pc --> disable smartshift. This way the dc motor doesnt have to switch between modes regulary so it wont go broken again.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS NOW IS PERFECT!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Man thank you, i needed to know this.
your solution is gold bro. Really really appreciate it.
Great tutorial, fixed mine, couldn't play Minecraft properly without the ratchet, kept spinning passed my choices! Thank you.
My issue was fixed when I did the opposite of what you suggested. In my case, pushing the part down makes it difficult for the motor to switch between back and forth. Lifting it up to a correct level fixed the issue.
same here
Thanks this video worked, I've watched many tutorial videos and you're the only one that fixed my mouse.
Of course nothing you did or nothing you showed me actually fix the mouse I mean it just magically started working while I was watching this video
what about the MS master 3s having the same problem on the new model
Thanks a ton, this fixed my mouse, these are not designed well in my opinion, my gesture button is completly unusable.
Just wanted to say thank you. I was worried about opening mine up but this helped a lot. Im going to make my clicks a bit quieter. Thanks again!
I just fixed my mouse, which I was very close to send it to RMA. This video makes it easy, clear and noob friendly to fix this issue. Thanks!!!
I don't have that mouse, was just looking for other fixes but the video focus and clarity is amazing compared to what is out there, good job!
Thanks for awesome fix tutorial!
I specially want to mention non-existing introblablabla stuff what is in most of "howto"videos. Your tutorial, focused on problem, explained how, why and what.
I really appreciate! THANK YOU once again!
Now my mouse has ratchet after 5 silent years. Best monday ever.
You saved my beloved 5 year mouse. Thank you so much!
Thanks Thomas - you helped me to perform successful surgery on my MX Mouse.
Before you take your MX Master apart make sure to hit the square button in front of the wheel to toggle between notched and free spinning modes. I thought mine was stuck in free spin but really i had accidentally toggled it to that mode and since I had just gotten the mouse i wasnt aware thats what the button did.
Yes!!! Same! Thank you!
@@kristinabarnett Same issue! Lol. I was about to open my mouse. Thank goodness I scrolled down the page.
This stupid problem still exists on newest mx master 3s.
Fixed it with similar method, thanks!! 🙏
Hey!
I don’t know if is the same problem that I have, but how you fixed this?
Hey man your tutorial video rocks, it become easy watching your video, it save me RM400. i was going to bought a Ms3 if it keep not working.
well ii found you and whole thing back in action. hope you see the message bro.
Which one you got, 3s ? Today, mine stopped working. Scroll wheel is just spinning freely no Ratchet now.
this problem happen to me after 2 month of use, this is really bothering me so much, but your video saved me. Thank you.
Only just fixed it and it is the same again?? 3 times today .. i give up. 😞 maybe just as well glue that lever down and just have the ratchet, to hard to use without it.
So, I have the MX mouse and the scroll-lock button no longer worked all of a sudden. Pushing the button on the top simply did nothing at all.
After finding this video, and having you explain it so clearly, I was able to simply hit the nose of the mouse against my hand to "unjam" the little arm that overshot the lock.
And that fixed it. Didn't even have to open the mouse.
See ma, sometimes hitting something DOES fix it!
Thanks for posting this! I took mine apart and couldn't figure out what the problem was. Now I not only know what to look, for but what to do to fix it! A+
Thanks for the vid. You've helped me feel confident in opening up my mouse. It's now 2022 and the mouse is STILL great. However, my cat knocked it to the floor and now it doesn't ratchet. The underside of my mouse is a little different than yours. There aren't two tiny screws near the front of the mouse. But, I'll give it a try!
if you recently bought this mouse and have this trouble then try the ratchet/freewheel toggle button (small black) located right behind the wheel. It works for me to get me out of the freewheeling mode. I can't confirm if the latest firmware version helps but it wouldn't hurt to try that as well.
First of all, thank you for this awesome tutorial. Of course it "fixed" my MX too as expected. And then about a month later, it did the same bullshit again. Taking off the pads is the biggest problem as they tend to split (mine did). They should have at least put the screws somewhere accessible like the two torx ones are (and don't even get me started on how stupid it is to use two different types of screws and especially a friggin' itty bitty torx -- I had to order that screw-driver set just to fix this f'n mouse)!
Anyone come up with a permanent solution yet (that still gives free-spin AND ratchet modes). As a programmer, I use free-spin all the time to zip up and down my code, or web pages. I use ratchet to step through the same for reading/debugging. It really is amazing this is a problem, as I have an MX Revolution that has this same free/ratchet wheel and it has never had a problem in the 5+ years I've owned it. How the hell did Logitech break a working mechanism? Didn't they ever hear the phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Lol. I started facing this probelm now
People u dont need to disassemble whole mouse, just bend some wire or attachment pin and insert it behind mousewheel, it just pops right in place and thats it :D
make a video?
Yes. PLEASE illustrate how this works. I'm sitting here with a paperclip and can't seem to get it to work (as you indicate it should be easy)...
Actually milvuc's advice does work, but for me temporarily. I powered off my MX Master, and looking at it so that the scroll wheel is facing me, while the mouse is flat on the desk, I inserted a paperclip into the upper right behind the mouse wheel. (You can tell in the video where the lever is that controls the flywheel mechanism.) After a little fiddling it clicks and the ratchet mode comes back. I was very pleased with this until I powered the mouse back on. CLICK. Back in free-wheel mode. I could hear it engage the second I turned the mouse on. I repeated this several times and realized that with the mouse powered on it would not stay in ratchet mode. So in the end, no luck for me. Tried taking it apart and fixing it and putting it back together to the same effect. Plus I've slapped it silly. Can't fix it. This is just a design flaw and I don't think there is any practical no-time-wasted way of fixing it.
Stabbing behind the mouse wheel blindly with a paperclip worked for me
Thanks for this detailed instruction. Hope this could fix the issue for my mouse, which is always in free scrolling mode regardless.
After all these years i still use this mouse and have done this fix about 3 or 4 times this video is still great haha
I tried this as I couldn't scroll at all on any web page or app. I had updated the software for my Mac a while back and scrolling stopped working, this is how to fix the issue: On your Mac…Go to
1) Click on the apple icon on the top left corner of the screen
2) Select System Preferences
3) Click Security & Privacy
4) Click Privacy tab
5) Click on Accessibility on the left hand side
6) Click on Logitech Options Daemon
(if it’s greyed out it’s because you have it locked…click on the pad lock on the bottom right of the little window to unlock it).
7) Then tick to allow it and save by locking.
Hope you have success!
I was almost about to follow this video and then I read that after you choose ratchet in the software, you must click that button directly below the wheel for it to take effect.
Thank you for this, now that I understood the problem I could fix mine by lightly slamming it against my thigh which seemed to move the mechanism sufficiently down and fix the problem without opening it up
Perfect! Mine recently stopped going back into Ratchet mode after pressing the button. I think that piece overshot. Thanks for uploading this!
I have to smack the bottom of my mouse in order for the Racheting to work again.
Thanks for the detailed instruction. Hopefully this would fix the issue of my mouse, which is always in free scroll mode regardless.
Thank you. That was clear. Now to the Thumb Wheel. It is driving me nuts because the sensitivity adjustment no longer works, it seems, so if I am working with the mouse in any way, the pages jump back and forth as my thumb happens to touch the wheel. I want to take a hammer to it, but that probably will not be a good idea. I would like to eliminate the use of that thumb area, but the software does not offer cutting it out. Any solution?
Good video, thanks. The newer version p/n 810-006580 has done away with all that plastic moving switch stuff in favor of what appears to be a 100% electromagnetic switch. Energizing the switch creates the resistance with no movement that I can see. There is a little metal half-moon that can jump forward and get stuck though )(If you drop the thing 100x from 5' onto hardwood or tile. Took a minute to figure out to move that piece back on top (inside the wheel). In hindsight pics would have been useful but taking it apart again after all the PRAYING I did during the first dissasembly borders on blasphemy i think :)
as looking for a solution for the sudden free spinning and not clicking. After watching this video of how it works, decided to give a few hard knock and now it has started to click when spinning.... I guess is the dirt causing the latch not to lock in place.
Thanks
What about the 3S ? Mine just suddenly is stuck in free spinning mode --- tried everything and its driving me crazy
if the world was a fair place with fair people in it, everyone that saved $90 on a new mouse because of this video should send you at least $20... put a donation link or a bitcoin address in the description man, you deserve something back for this free easy solution on a good video tutorial!
Thank you sir! I cracked open my mx master and fixed it like you instructed. I wish they could've just fixed this in the design phases. I wonder if the mx master 2 has this problem.
Thanks for this, it does seem a little bit loose on the ratchet so I can see why this might be a common issue. If it does it again I'll just chuck some loctite on the rachet..
Saving lives brother! Thanks a bunch for this upload!
Another thing that might fix this problem, and you have an MX Master 2S, is removing the cam from the shaft, and repositioning it back. I thought that something was wrong with the motor on the new 2S, so I swapped the motors between the MX Master and MX Master 2S, and doing so, I had to remove the cam and place it back on both mouses. Now both mouses work as they should, so I didn't really need to swap the motors, but for some reason, the old motor seems more snappy or powerful compared to the new one.
Thank you so much for the video. Mouse wheel repaired and now I feel like a NASA engineer. I'm gonna apply for some position at SpaceX, now that I think about it :)
Came looking for why my mouse just spins freely without the ratcheting any more. Didn't realize the button behind the mouse toggled between freewheel full time & ratchet until you said "Mode Shift" button around the 4:00 mark 🙄
Thanks! Got it fixed thanks to your fantastic video! Best wishes from Munich, Germany!👍
And here's another one in 2024. Such a simple fix too! Thankyou.
I have this same mouse and after years of use encountered this issue. After watching this video and seeing the mechanism, I just decided to smack my mouse -- basically just punched it. Fixed it without opening it up.
Fixed mine! Had it for three years before this started. THNX!!
Me, too! Just that I had my mouse for 2.5 years now and the ratched mode completely stopped working. But now it's working again! Nice. And I was already annoyed that I would need to by a new mouse...
