When I opened up Smartphones which Can be open from the sides, I mean like what you have done right there. I don't usually take off the back cover. I just pop the sim card out and pry from the sides.

if your phone body is unibody, you can just remove simcard tray then the cover.
if not unibody, after removing the back cover & removing the simcard tray, you need to unscrew first.
