  • Managed to record a departing Biittern although too distant for any detail or stablility in the camera work. Also a couple of weeks after saying I hadn't seen any Little Ringed Plovers in Goldcliff this year I saw several plus a Great White Egret, sedge Warbler and Reed Bunting showing well.

    Hello John! Beautiful morning and great birding! So many varieties of birds from waders ( lots of varieties) to lovely linnet, sedge and bunting ! Indeed male birds are trying their luck as often as possible. That female oystercatcher would have rather gone on feeding ( she did). Loved the snipe in the open with its striped head!
    It’s always a pleasure to see the shining green of lapwings and
    their lovely heads.
    Little plovers are always really cute with their golden eye circles!
    Thank you indeed for this ! What a great place!
    Best of everything and very good luck !🤞 ‼️😊😊👋👋👍👍

    So relaxing John, your vids are the perfect accompaniment with an evening tipple. Got me 1st Lesser Whitethroat today for a couple of years so well chuffed with that, 10th Warbler of the year, makes me think of your wonderful British Warbler vids I first watched during lockdown, important pick-me-ups in that period..

    I see a bit of oystercatchers trying to attempt mate for a while, but is the breeding season for most birds, really over now?

    • @johnluk
      @johnluk  2 месяца назад

      You’d think so but a lot of birds keep trying and will rear more than one brood. A few years ago on a snowy day in January I saw a juvenile Bearded Tit feeding on reeds in Newport Wetlands. You can see a photo at 1:10 in this video.

      It must have come from a very late brood.

    Great to see the bittern, is it passing through or resident nearby do you think?

    • @johnluk
      @johnluk  Месяц назад

      Definitely resident nearby. There are a couple of pairs breeding in Newport Wetlands just up the coast and although no young have been seen in Goldcliff we’re increasingly seeing Bitterns in flight. The one in the video took off from reeds just below the hide but my camera was attached to a tripod behind me and by the time I detached it and started recording the bird was a long way from me which is why it’s only a record shot!

      So great to see how well they're doing across the UK, even ten years ago they were so hard to find
