Java Steam in 1984

- Java in late December 1984 (and possibly into January 1985) - it was the very end of Javan Mainline Steam. In the East of Java, I found 4 locos in steam (B2301, D1105, D1107 and D52021). These would have been among the very last active PNKA/PJKA locos. I believe steam officially ended in 1984. I also visited Klakah (no footage) to find that the C11 (or C12) loco worked only in the morning and was safely tucked up in its shed in the afternoon. The order of the video is Malang, PG Kebonagung (locos being serviced in the off season), PG Ngadirejo (still milling in late December with locos in use), Kediri and finishes in Kertesono with one D52 in action and another one having its tender toppled to assist scrapping. We also see a C11 and B53 stored in the roundhouse there.
Originally filmed in NTSC VHS and later converted to PAL Digital Video, the quality leaves a lot to be desired but some of you will find the footage fascinating (I hope!). It was filmed about as close as you could get the the very end of steam on the national railways of Indonesia.

16:46 those MCW 302 DMUs are now converted into rail clinic and inspection railcars. There is only one unit left used for local train between Semarang Poncol and Ngrombo.

Suling 5 Chime, mirip-mirip ama 5 Chimenya Rio Grande
By this time, D52086 was kept in good condition (not sure about the mechanics) in Purwokerto/Kutoarjo for Special Train every 28 September. She survive untill early 1990 (might be 1992) when she was scrapped in Kutoarjo, in serviceable condition. C2838 also kept in good condition during this time (1984's) in Blitar, but didn't survive the 1980's i believe

25:54, 26:02, and 27:05, was the sound of a 5 Chime whistle the PNKA (now KAI) used to have. This one sounds similiar to the Rio Grande 5 Chime. Many of these 5 chimes on several Medium-Big Steam Locomotives on Java had mis-tuned its sound note so much, probably due to a cracked whistle bell, mis-centered bolts, etc.
25:54, 26:02, dan 27:05, adalah suara dari Suling Nada 5 yang dulu PNKA (sekarang KAI) miliki. Yang satu ini bunyinya mirip seperti Suling Nada 5 punya Rio Grande. Kebanyakan suling macam ini di beberapa Lokomotif menengah-besar (C28, C50, C53, BB10, CC10, dan beberapa lokomotif serupa tak dihitung) mengalami perbedaan nada bunyi. Kemungkinan besar karena Bel Suling yang mengalami kerusakan, baut yang semakin lama semakin aus, dll.
In the same year (1984) i believe, some steam loco in South Sumatra's mainline is still in active services, some even hire by PTBA (Bukit Asam Coal Company) for shunting in the Kertapati port yard assist some PTBA's Private own loco

@@dadengzovan7711 By 1984, the surviving working locos in Java were mainly used to move Pertamina wagons - either shunting or working down a branch (as in the case of Kertesono - Kediri) or for 'transmigrasi' which kept the Ponorogo branch open. I'm fairly sure the 1 (or 2) surviving D52s at Kertesono were to move Pertamina wagons. I think Cibatu - Garut survived on a Pertamina contract.

Engines, weither its electric, steam, or diesels will oftenly come and go as new technologies were being developed through out the years. both Steam, Diesel, and Electrics would eventualy find their demise on the smelters yard, weither you like it or not. But some might find their endings in a rather happier site compare to others. But in the end, this is just how machines are treated. Once the new ones were very succesful, the predecesors would eventualy go.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The film was taken at various places in Eastern Java as described in the film description above - The order of the video is Malang, PG Kebonagung (locos being serviced in the off season), PG Ngadirejo (still milling in late December with locos in use), Kediri and finishes in Kertesono.

DAOP 8 is coverage area in East Java. The headquarter office at Surabaya (now, the office is along side with Gubeng railways station).
The railways operation region for East Java consist are DAOP 9 (Jember area) and DAOP 8 (Surabaya area heading to central java).

If you come to Indonesia, especially to East Java. For my opinion, you get the difference situation, either the locomotive, the train, the railways station and anything.
You can find various news from PT KAI (Indonesian Railways State Own Company), formerly PJKA/ PNKA since management reform and transformation from 2009.
For example, you still remember if you travelling by the train from Surabaya to Jakarta. The travel time was more less than 15 to 17 hour.
Now, you get the travel time is more less than 8 hour by the high class train Argo Bromo Anggrek or another train for the same destination for lower class train is more less than 11 hours.
The railways station area and the train area are clean and restrict. Only passanger are there.
