- Why Can't I Be You? was followed in June by Catch, coupled with Breathe, written in the grounds of Miravel, the remote French studio where the Kiss Me album was recorded. "it's a song that means a lot to me. Lyrically it deals with a reccurring Cure theme," says Robert, "that hopeless wanting for what has been, knowing that it is gone forever. Musically it's trying to capture the feel of late night Miraval... a beautiful world of stars and sighs."
This song to me is like, being close to death, like dying to the elements in super cold or something, about to collapse and die to the weather but the love you have of someone pushes you to keep on going and stand back up when you hear their voice in your head. It’s such a beautiful song, one of my favourites by The Cure.
Nice! I love this one too.
Deep. 🤟🏼
The Cure mean so much to me I dunno where I would be in life without their music...
I lost my Dad when I was 2 years of age, I’m 42 now. I don’t have any living memory of him. There’s a sombreness to this song that makes me think of what might have been. Thank you to the Cure, I like feeling that emotion whether it’s positive or not. It’s not only this tune but others as well. I’m sure this area of my life attracts me this band.
The most beautiful song in the entire world, ever
My fav cure song.
I agree
They definitely have a song for every mood, every minute of every day, every year,...year in and year out ! The Cure are stupendous !!! Robert rules !!!
Agreed
It’s almost like their souls take over the whole band’! If you don’t like the Cure’s songs it’s most probable that you’re soul isn’t in tune with you. Go and Meditate and speak to your Higher Power. Whether it’s The Lord, Our Saviour or.
This song was a b-side to Just Like Heaven in our lunchroom jukebox in HS. I kept playing this over & over when i found it. I fell in love with this song in 1987 & with the Cure in '82. When it was released on their Join the Dots b-sides album, it was one of the best days ever!
Wow, you had a juke box in your lunch room in high school! That’s amazing. And with this single on it. Double amazing. When I was a kid my parents belonged to a country club and would drop us off at the pool while they played golf. Afterwords we’d have dinner in the dining room. I’d squirrel away and hang out in this big room that had a free juke box. I’d play the Beau Brummels song Laugh Laugh and Just A Little over and over. Great times.
Wow badass story I have one too we had jukebox I'm Junior highschool Iuaed to play Nirvana ells like teen spirit b-side was Even in his youth classic fr 1993 those were the years!!!
It was a time before we grew old, and everything was perfect, and we ran and laughed, and we had nothing to worry about.
My favourite cure song.
The Cure is a band that no one will ever recreate the sound of. No one has touched me like they do. And no one ever will. I'm sure of it. I may be a young teen in the wrong time but I know what I'm saying when I say this band will never die. If that makes sense.
I highly suggest you check out Blue October’s song Further Dive and the rest of that album. It’s the closest modern day music I’ve found that is on the same level of angelic beauty.
You are very right tho
So so many memories with The Cure songs. Just a beautiful song is Breathe that hits you where the smile turns in to tears - good and bad.
This completely makes sense. I'm now a young woman but was 16 when I fell for this band. Each one of their songs is a piece of art in my eyes and always will be. I too am trapped in the wrong time but there is nothing wrong with that :)
B sides and unknown pieces are epic because they are untouched. No one overlays them or remakes them so they remain pure and special.
One of the best bands ever. Proved it again in 2019 at Glastonbury
this song made me cry almost every time i heard it for a long time. just rediscovered it. wow. what a song
I'm loosing my mother on dementia, and this song just ripped my heart in strips.
So sad... How are You now after 4 years? Hope You are ok
Un abrazo de mucho amor .
Stay strong.
Wow, what a song. I could listen to this all day. The synths are fantastic, so otherwordly, ethereal and sublime. Hard to believe that this was recorded in the 80s; the Cure is timeless.
Simply a class of there own with all the shit in the world going on take yrself away by listening to the greatest band ever THE CURE and to Robert just keep going because the world needs your words and music !
For some reason this is not one of The Cures best known songs but I believe it is definately one of their best! Also check out their song "Chain of Flowers"

This song just proves the power of music. There are only 3 verses, yet tis songs moves you and purges you of some emotions. At least for me. The fact there is so little and yet so,so much proves how powerful this band really is. Because I've never heard another band do this. Maybe I never will. And if I do,I still will listen to this band. Because they touch me like no other. I'm sure no one will ever come close to making music like this ever again. Long Live The Cure.
Ya,I'm very sappy.~_~
This song is GORGEOUS just like Robert and his amazing voice!

I think u have gr8 taste in music if The Cure is ur favorite band. The Cure is, and will always b my favorite band---EVER.
Seen them 3 times now, and own many Cure CD'S. Never tire of them. They r ONE-of-a-kind---unreachably beyond "unique". Young teen or not---u r entitled 2 have an opinion about them, and I agree. Also, being sappy is better than being cold... hang tough...
Absolutely beautiful... I love their B-sides.

One of the best songs ever! The Cure is the best!
I've been going through some rough times. Haven't heard this song in forever. This song says it all, and is letting me be....at peace. Thanks Robert and company. Long Live The Cure.
If I'm having a stressful day, I'll find the time to just listen to this track. It's so peaceful. It kind of just reminds me to breath and calm down.
one of my coworkers/friends (about a decade younger than my mid 40s self) sort of found The Cure a few years ago..of course all the popular songs so I've been introducing her to some of the lesser known amazing songs and B sides ...this was the first B side I played for her and it moves me to some deep emotional place everytime I hear it 🥰
This is too breathtaking for words. Pure art.

The Cure.....timeless.
Beautiful song
We were misplaced in time but within my boundless imagination we had a marvelous life and reality and time existing only through the perception of the living, who can say all of it never veritably happened? Who can affirm that it is not presently still 1987 and that we are not still loving on the blue-gray backseat of your old 2CV by the side of a beach in southern France? I swear it is so. I swear we're there. The same as I'd sworn I'd never stop loving you. Well you see Agathe... my «gagathe» as you pretended to not like me calling you, I didn't lie.
Well hey...there might yet be other lives for us. Here's hoping, you forever beautiful girl...

I see those boots are back in fashion again. :-)
It's very similar to Pachobel's "Canon In D Major", except it's in C Major.
Also, RS is the only Cure member on the track (all the keys are his).
