- Discord Music Bots are being forced to close due to legal action from Google (due its RUclips platform) as a result of violating its API Terms of Service and Policies. Music Bots, such as Groovy which have announced its closure allowed users access to RUclips content through modifying the service and then using it for commercial purposes. This will impact everyone, because Groovy was the second biggest bot on Discord, boasting 16 million Discord Servers and over 250 million users. Whilst the biggest Discord Bot, Rythm, is also a music bot and may face being shut down - as some are speculating a cease and desist letter was also sent to it’s owner as well. This is about to change the entire platform forever, with Discord Music Bots predicted to be banned across the platform. In this video, I discuss the specifics of the situation - how policies were violated and what the future may hold.
In summary, RUclips was losing money by not being able to monetise the content through viewership, whilst the music bots were able to offer premium services and make money as a result. Hence legal action was taken to prevent RUclips services being used by the bots, but as they account for 98% of search/ play queries - and the 2% remaining being other steaming services like SoundCloud and Spotify they had no other alternative but to close down as it was not feasible - as other companies would most likely follow RUclips’s action and also request for removal of their services. Groovy’s Discord Moderators / Discord Mods have explained that they had a 7 day compliance time in which to act, hence the 30th August Shut Down date. This was announced previously by the Groovy Discord Owner in a heartbreaking announcement - and is weird to see as a verified Discord Bot (and verified Discord community is consequently impacted). It is predicted however, that RUclips might team up with Discord to make a feature in the near future in relation to RUclips streaming which could be the reason for the recent takedowns. However, we will have to wait and see.
In the background I am playing Minecraft Bed Wars (a PvP game mode) on the biggest Minecraft Server in the world… Hypixel. I am using Badlion Client (as Lunar Client will not currently work for me) and Optifine. My texture pack is the Panda Pack by Notrodan for 1.8.9 versions. Don't you find it weird, that google, one of the largest companies in the world, has to go over a simple discord bot that plays music just because it doesn't play ads?

The creator of the music wouldn’t get any money as well. To many people are doing this and google and the music creator not making money. Ads are important and groovy were pretty big so they probably lost a good amount of money. Just listen to the song on youtube

You know, you would think that the big heads of Google would be a lot smarter than this and just request a deal that groovy devs have to pay X%/month of groovy subscription fees to them so they’ll continue to make money… instead of shutting down the bot all together. Which will only force people to use other avenues to get their music binge regardless.

This is actually sad, I have a very happy memory of just me and friends listening to music on Groovy or rythm. We would sing along and just have fun, but its all gonna end now.

adblocks aren't for profit. that's the only difference, but it's a huge one that stops legal action.
The bots where directly using something which is of youtubes property (their database), ad blocks are a different thing all together.

@@juansan2406 Kind of, the thing is that they are getting the raw video without the ads, you can get the URL, and unless you have an adblock you will get ads shown, discord bots never show ads (if you are wondering why hasnt youtube or google taken down addblocks it is because they are not using something owned by them explicitly)

I use groovy for my TTRPG campaigns cause we had to move our d&d stuff to discord. So if all music bots do end up getting shut down then it'll be a huge blow

@Maykil107 dude, youtube has an advertising based ceo right now who's honestly just doing a lot of things to grow the platform (albeit the decisions aren't all good for us). youtube will stay what it is, and a deal like this makes too much sense. they aren't nintendo where they frankly don't allow any use of intellectual property, it's only the fact that they're losing money for another's gain that makes them take down the bot.

Gonna be honest, it actually makes sense, the way groovy operates, youtube is essentially being robbed for its own content. I don't typically agree with major corporations cracking down on individuals, but youtube seems to be in the right on this one. It's not like nintendo sending a cease and desist to independent fan game creators who make no profit, these people were using another platform illegally for their own gain without permission. I love groovy just like a lot of you here though. I'll miss the service

Rythm still works with RUclips Music links, so I suppose the problem is that we are not watching a video but listening to when using RUclips links, that's the reason why RUclips ask if we are watching yet after some time. I mean, you are supposed to be watching, not listening RUclips, but this do not apply to RUclips music... it makes sense?

If music bots in discord ending it's service, I'm gonna be really sad since i won't be able to vibe with my friends in servers.
Making a bot that you can play music by giving it an mp3 file, something groovy did that the devs didnt primarily move to because their brains are small and mine is large
